Motive emerges for murder of Perth brothers in Mexico

Perth Now2 days ago
The Mexican prosecutor leading the case against four people accused of killing Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson has ruled out any connection to cartel activity, saying it was more likely a botched robbery.
Miguel Ángel Gaxiola Rodríguez says there is still no evidence linking the brutal murders to organised crime, the ABC reported.
This is despite the horrific killings occurring in an area notorious for cartel activity and violence. Instead, Mr Gaxiola Rodríguez believes the most likely reason for the murders was tyre theft.
Jake and Callum Robinson had been camping in a remote part of northern Mexico with their American friend Carter Rhoad when they were each shot in the head in April 2024.
Their bodies were then callously dumped in a 15-metre-deep well in Baja California. A fourth, unrelated body was also found in the same location.
Mr Gaxiola Rodriguez told the ABC: 'It appears the perpetrators identified an opportunity for robbery when they encountered the foreigners in a highly isolated location.
'These individuals exploited the circumstances to perpetrate the robbery, resulting in the fatal shooting of the three foreigners.'
Four people are now facing charges over the killings: Jesús Gerardo, known as 'El Kekas'; his then-girlfriend Ari Gisell; Ángel Jesús; and Irineo Francisco.

Since their arrests, a court was told Gerardo — who was the first to be taken into custody — had allegedly confessed to his then-partner, showing her the allegedly stolen tyres and then allegedly telling her: 'I f...ed up three gringos'.
All the defendants are due to appear in court next week, where they will face charges of aggravated homicide — which carries a maximum penalty of 60 years, violent robbery, and grand theft auto, with the three men also facing an addition count of forced disappearance.
'We have compelling evidence, including witness statements, and we have found the vehicle,' Mr Gaxiola Rodríguez said. 'The objective is to ensure that the accused are brought to trial and convicted of the homicide and robbery.'

Unreleased Beyonce songs 'stolen from rental car' during Cowboy Carter tour

Unreleased Beyonce songs and other sensitive documents have allegedly been stolen from a rental car. Last week - less than 48 hours before the Crazy In Love hitmaker started her four-night residency at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta during her ongoing Cowboy Carter tour - thieves allegedly broke into a rental car which had been hired by the singer's choreographer, and one of her dancers. As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, an incident report alleges that the theft occurred on July 8, with the suspect taking hard drives containing "water marked music, some un-released music, footage plans for the show and past and future set lists". Choreographer Christopher Grant and dancer Diandre Blue are said to have told authorities that they parked up at a parking deck just after 8pm. When they returned to the vehicle an hour later, it's alleged someone had broken into the car through the boot, and taken two suitcases. As well as the hard drives, it's said the thieves also took clothes, MacBooks and AirPods Max headphones, which belonged to members of her team. As reported by Atlanta's ABC station WSB-TV, police have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect. The Atlanta Police Department told the outlet in a statement: "Preliminary investigation revealed a Jeep Wagoneer was broken into at the location and two suitcases had been stolen. "Investigators with the Atlanta Police Department's Larceny from Auto Unit led the investigation and have subsequently secured an arrest warrant for a suspect." Officers dusted the rental car for prints, finding two sets, while footage was caught on a security camera. The incident report obtained by The Hollywood Reporter noted that officers were able to track the location of the AirPods and laptops using the Find My feature on Apple devices. The locations were redacted in the documents, but it's said officers carried out a "suspicious person stop" in the area flagged by the AirPods. Beyonce and her team are yet to comment on the incident.

Rescued backpacker lost 12kg during outback ordeal

A German backpacker who spent almost two weeks lost in the outback after abandoning her bogged van lost more than 10 kilograms during her ordeal. Carolina Wilga was found by a driver on Friday, after disappearing on June 29 near the remote WA town of Beacon, about 300km northeast of Perth. The 26-year-old returned to social media on Monday night, posting photos from her hospital bed in Perth. Ms Wilga is playfully smiling and holding a bunch of flowers in one image, surrounded by a vast array of food. "When you need to gain 12 kilograms back," the Instagram caption read. The second image is a close-up of the tasty delicacies, including chocolate and pastries. "Thanks to the German Consulate," the caption said. Ms Wilga suffered cuts, bruises, dehydration and fatigue during her ordeal in bushland, where overnight temperatures fell to almost zero. In a statement on Monday, she thanked her rescuers and explained why she left her Mitsubishi van, which police found about 35km from a main track in a dense bush nature reserve. "Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food and clothing there," she said in the statement issued by WA Police. "The answer is: I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope. In the crash, I hit my head significantly. "As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost." Ms Wilga also thanked the driver who found her, describing the woman named Tania as a "rescuer and angel". "Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community," she said. She believes she survived because of an "incredible outpouring of support". "The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments," she said. "For this, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart." Police previously said Ms Wilga spent just one night with her van after it got bogged in the Karroun Hill Nature Reserve bushland. She followed the sun and walked 24km west, thinking that would be her best bet of finding a road. She had minimal food and water and was in the elements for 11 nights.
