Amid India-Philippines naval drill in South China Sea, President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr to arrive in New Delhi tomorrow

Indian Express4 hours ago
President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr of the Philippines is set to arrive in New Delhi on August 4 in his first trip to India since assuming office in 2022, even as the two countries have begun their first bilateral naval exercise in the South China Sea.
A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that Marcos Jr will be visiting India at Prime Minister Narendra Mod'is invitation. During his four-day visit, Marcos Jr will hold talks with President Droupadi Murmu; PM Modi; External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar; and Health Minister J P Nadda, who is also the BJP president.
Marcos Jr will meet Jaishankar on August 4. On August 5, he will lay a wreath at Raj Ghat, before holding bilateral talks with PM Modi in Hyderabad House, wherein India and the Philippines will sign several agreements. He will then meet Nadda and travel to Bengaluru, where he will call on Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.
India and the Philippines began the two-day 'bilateral maritime cooperative activity' on Saturday in waters close to the Scarborough Shoal, a focal point of the maritime dispute between China and the Philippines. Sources say India is joining these efforts owing to its shared concerns about China's growing maritime power, including in the South China Sea.
Defence cooperation is one of the strong pillars of bilateral relations and a promising area for future collaboration between India and the Philippines, says the website of the Indian embassy in Manila. India delivered the first batch of BrahMos missile system to the Philippines on April 19, 2024, making it the first foreign nation to acquire the missile weapon system.
The diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines were established in November 1949. President Marcos Jr's state visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, the MEA said.
The MEA statement further said that India's relations with the Philippines were an integral pillar of its 'Act East' policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and its vision of the Indo-Pacific. The visit is an opportunity for both leaders to set the path for future bilateral cooperation and to engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest, it added.
As per the website of the Indian embassy in Manila, there have been four presidential visits from the Philippines to India—by President Ferdinand E Marcos in 1976 (stopover visit), President Fidel Ramos in 1997, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2007, and President Rodrigo Duterte in Jan 2018.
From the Indian side, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited the Philippines in 1981, followed by President R Venkatraman in 1991; President A P J Abdul Kalam in 2006, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2007. More recently, PM Modi visited the country in 2017 and President Ram Nath Kovind visited it in 2019.

BJP Demands Urgent Installation of High-Mast Lights at Aija Bus Stand Junction

Gadwal: Led by BJP Aija Town President Kampati Bhagat Reddy, local leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a representation at the main road near the new bus stand, demanding the installation of high-mast street lights at the busy junction. Speaking to the media, Bhagat Reddy criticized the Congress-led government for neglecting public infrastructure and ignoring key civic issues faced by residents, particularly in Jogulamba Gadwal district's Aija Municipality. He highlighted the hardships faced by the public due to the absence of proper lighting at the new bus stand and main junction, which has become increasingly dangerous during night hours. He recalled that in March 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, an existing iMAX light pole collapsed due to poor quality, fortunately causing no injuries. However, since then, no action has been taken to restore lighting at the crucial junction, leaving the area in darkness for over four years. Multiple representations were made in the past: To former Municipal Commissioners on September 28 and October 24, 2024 To the current Commissioner on June 2, 2025 And to the District Collector on March 13, 2025 Following the Collector's intervention, 20 high-mast lights were sanctioned to Aija Municipality in May 2025. However, Bhagat Reddy alleged that these lights were selectively installed in areas favorable to Congress leaders, without any consultation with municipal officials or public representatives, ignoring more critical locations like the new bus stand junction. He demanded immediate action from the Municipality Commissioner, the District Collector, and the State Government, urging them to prioritize the safety and convenience of the general public. 'If the government fails to respond and install the high-mast lights at the junction without delay, the BJP will take to the streets along with the public and organize massive protests,' warned Bhagat Reddy. Present at the event were: District Council Member Pradeep Kumar, Aija Town Vice-President Lakshman Goud, OBC Morcha District Committee Members Lakshmachari, Raghu, Veeresh, Venkatesh, and Shivayya among others.

NDA seeks legal action against Tejashwi Yadav for allegedly holding two Voter ID cards

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday (August 3, 2025) urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take cognisance of the two voter ID cards allegedly possessed by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar AssemblyTejashwi Yadav, and file a case against him. National spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Ajay Alok; chief spokesperson of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Neeraj Kumar; Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) leader Rajesh Bhatt; Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) leader Shyam Sundar; and spokesperson of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) Nitin Bharti, apart from the BJP's media in-charge Danish Iqbal, raised the issue at a press conference in Patna. Mr. Patra said the EPIC number given by the RJD leader was not the one he had submitted in his 2020 election affidavit, according to the ECI's records. Mr. Patra said the Commission and the Patna District Magistrate had exposed Mr. Yadav's 'lies' and put the 'whole truth forward as it is' by stating that his name was enrolled in the voters' list of the Digha Assembly constituency. 'That EPIC number is the same that he (Mr. Yadav) had mentioned in his nomination affidavit of you give a wrong affidavit? Did you (Mr. Yadav) file a wrong nomination paper? Did you file under oath during filing nomination?' Mr. Patra said. 'Did Tejashwi Yadav have two voter ID cards? If the supreme leader of a party has two EPIC cards, what would be the condition of its workers? Is this why they are afraid of SIR ('Special Intensive Revision' of electoral roll)?' Mr. Patra said, accusing the RJD and the Congress of indulging in unfair means to win elections. 'Over the past few years, we have witnessed that the Opposition, particularly the Congress and RJD, etc., have been deliberately targeting Constitutional institutions without any basis as part of a conspiracy to lower Bharat's stature,' he said. 'Rahul Gandhi was claiming that that he would explode an 'atom bomb' and perhaps this was his atom that of Pakistan. Neither is Indian democracy afraid of the threat of atom bomb from Pakistan nor that of Rahul Gandhi,' he said. He had also compared the evidence to an 'atom bomb'. The BJP leader termed the SIR a Constitutional process being implemented in a 'precise and non-escalatory' manner. 'If you have a problem, your Booth Level Agents (BLA) can lodge complaint with Booth Level is one month's time from August 1 to September 1. Including all parties, there are about 1.5 lakh BLAs and no one has complained so far. Only applications for adding 3,323 new names of youth who turned 18 on January 1 have been received,' Mr. Patra said, adding that the RJD and the Congress would face an 'epic defeat'.
