ISKCON temple in US targeted in suspected hate crime; India urges swift action and stands in solidarity
According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during nighttime hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches.
Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, 'We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice.'
A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities.
The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. 'In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail,' BAPS Public Affairs wrote.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles.
'Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close,' CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation.
Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York.
Messages such as 'Hindus go back' were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate. (ANI)

It is important to note that this was a non-structural trim component, fitted onto the window for the purpose of shade, and did not compromise the safety or integrity of the aircraft in any way.' 'Cabin pressurisation remained normal throughout the flight, and there was no impact on passenger safety," ANI reported quoting a SpiceJet spokesperson. Despite the visual disruption, cabin pressurisation remained normal, and there was no impact on passenger safety, the spokesperson said. The airline emphasised that the Q400 aircraft is equipped with multiple layers of window panes, including a robust, pressure-bearing outer pane that ensures continued safety even if cosmetic fittings are affected, it added. Passengers on board were not at risk at any point, and the airline has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards. The frame was fixed upon landing at the next station, in accordance with standard maintenance procedures, airline added in its statement. This incident comes weeks after the Ahmedabad plane crash occurred, in which 260 people were killed, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Only one person miraculously survived the crash. The bodies of 260 people who died in the Air India-171 plane crash have been handed over to their family members, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the investigation into the crash and working intensively on analysing data retrieved from the black boxes of Air India Flight AI-171, in their lab in New Delhi.

Bangladesh tribunal sentences former PM Sheikh Hasina to 6 months in prison in contempt of court case
Dhaka [Bangladesh], July 2 (ANI): The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), a Bangladesh court designated for the trial of international crimes, on Wednesday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to six months in prison in a contempt of court case. A three-member tribunal led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder gave this order. Earlier, A Y Moshiuzzaman, a senior lawyer, was appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) by the ICT for a full hearing of the contempt of court case. The Chief Prosecutor filed a contempt of court complaint against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League leader Shakil Alam Bulbul on April 30, in light of their statements regarding the case related to the July mass uprising incident. The formal charges stated that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind behind the inhumane acts, such as crimes against humanity, murders, and the burning of bodies across the country during the movement to overthrow the government in 2024. These crimes were organised on her orders. 'There are 227 cases against me, so I have a license to kill 227 people', Sheikh Hasina said in an alleged audio clip that went viral a few months ago. Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police conducted a forensic examination of the conversation and found its authenticity. After that, a contempt of court application was filed with the tribunal. The prosecution said that Sheikh Hasina did not appear in person or provide an explanation through a lawyer even after the notice was published in the newspaper. In this situation, the tribunal can now punish those involved by the law. Earlier in the day, anti-national and anti-independence forces had staged a mock trial against Sheikh Hasina in a kangaroo court formed to implement their political objectives in Bangladesh, the Awami League said in a statement. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government after Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5. (ANI)

Himachal Minister Anirudh Singh denies assault allegations with NHAI official, seeks meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 2 (ANI): A day after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Himachal Pradesh's Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh for allegedly assaulting an NHAI official, the minister on Tuesday categorically denied the charges, saying he would fully cooperate with the investigation and face the law. He also accused the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of carrying out 'unscientific and dangerous' construction work across the state, leading to massive damage to lives and property. While addressing the media in Shimla on Wednesday, Singh said he would seek an appointment with Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to raise these serious concerns, and demanded a high-level investigation into the working of NHAI and the companies involved in highway expansion in the hill state. 'I will fully cooperate with the inquiry. I believe in the rule of law. But let me also ask who will investigate NHAI's negligence? Who will answer for the loss of lives due to their reckless and unscientific methods?', the Himachal Minister said while addressing the media. The police had registered a case at Dhalli police station against Singh under sections 132, 121(1), 352, 126(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Achal Jindal, Manager (Technical) at NHAI. The complaint alleges that Singh verbally abused and physically assaulted Jindal during a site visit to Bhattakufer in Shimla district, following the collapse of a five-storey building. According to the FIR, Singh allegedly hit Jindal with a water container inside a house, injuring his head. A second NHAI engineer, Yogesh, was also allegedly assaulted when he tried to intervene. 'First Information Report does not mean I am guilty. Let the police do their investigation. Were there any eyewitnesses? Any photographs? These are deliberate attempts to cover up the bigger issue', Anirudh Singh said. The minister has come up with counter-allegations against NHAI. Calling the charges against him a 'conspiracy,' Singh alleged that the real issue was being buried: the collapse of buildings due to hazardous cutting practices by NHAI and its contractors. 'From Kalka to Shimla, massive slope cuttings up to 125 feet deep are being done. Retaining walls are only 8 to 10 feet high. What kind of engineering is this?. Landslides are happening, people are dying, but NHAI officials are turning a blind eye. There's a nexus between the contractors, central agencies, and some bureaucrats,' he added. Singh said 700 to 800 complaints have been registered against NHAI's construction practices in Shimla alone, yet no serious action has been taken. He also questioned how much additional funding was given to NHAI for slope protection and road safety measures, and demanded a forensic-level investigation into the design and safety protocols of highway projects in Himachal. 'This is not just about compensation. Can you compensate someone who lost their entire home and life's savings with money?. There must be a national policy on road building in hilly regions. We are not against development. But it must not come at the cost of human lives', he said. The controversy erupted after a five-storey building in Bhattakufer collapsed on June 30, damaging property and raising alarm over nearby construction activities. The building owner, Ranjana Verma, has lodged a separate complaint alleging that the road cutting work by NHAI and Gawar Construction Company caused deep cracks in her structure, which collapsed without warning. The police have registered a case under Sections 125 (negligence endangering life) and 324(4) (mischief causing property damage) of BNS against NHAI and the construction firm. 'The four-lane work is going on right beneath my house. Cracks appeared all around due to deep cuts. On June 30, the entire building came down,' Verma stated in her complaint. Following her complaint, police have also confirmed that six more houses in the area have developed structural cracks. The incident has triggered a broader political and institutional backlash. The Central Engineering Services Officers' Association has written to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking protection for its officers and action against the alleged assault. Meanwhile, Himachal Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, who also visited the collapse site on Tuesday, demanded a high-powered committee to monitor all four-lane construction work in the state. 'Cutting is being done at 90 degrees--this is unacceptable in a hill state. I will personally raise this issue with Nitin Gadkari ji,' he said. Anirudh Singh, meanwhile, insisted that NHAI and its officials must not be allowed to 'walk away' from their responsibilities. 'The NHAI officers cannot escape blame. The system has failed--from Delhi to the field. Forest, pollution, and highway departments are not doing their job. Accountability must start from the top,' he said. 'I have spoken to the Chief Minister in detail and will meet Nitin Gadkari to demand a strong law to prevent such tragedies.' Singh alleged that some officials tried to manipulate the situation by filing misleading reports and not responding swiftly. 'There were eight buildings marked unsafe. Why was no timely action taken? Even when residents warned that more collapse was likely, NHAI said they would 'compensate.' Is that enough?' he asked. The Dhalli police confirmed that the investigation into both cases, one against the minister and one against NHAI, is underway. (ANI)
