Shoukath prevails in Nilambur, but Anvar steals the show
MALAPPURAM: In an apparent dampener on the CPM's 'Pinarayi 3.0 Loading' campaign, UDF's Aryadan Shoukath romped home beating LDF's M Swaraj with a comfortable margin in Nilambur bypoll, the result of which was announced on Monday. However, it was independent candidate P V Anvar who stole the show with a stunning performance, bagging around 20,000 votes.
This is the first time that the LDF has lost a sitting seat in a by-election after the second Pinarayi government assumed office. Anti-incumbency factor was loud and clear in all segments of the constituency, giving heartburn to the CPM that was boasting of the achievements of the LDF government. Shoukath secured lead in almost all the local bodies, except Karulayi panchayat. UDF secured lead right from the first round and steadily increased it as the counting progressed.
Anvar, who was forced to jump into the fray after being driven to the wall by the UDF, succeeded in securing votes of both the UDF and the LDF, and came second in booth number one of the Vazhikkadavu panchayat. With this performance, Anvar has once again opened the discussions over his entry into the UDF, which was blocked reportedly by Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan.
Midway through the counting, KPCC president Sunny Joseph hinted that the issue is not a closed chapter. IUML state president Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal quipped that though Anvar had missed the UDF train from the Nilambur station, he can board from any other station.
Among all the constituents of the UDF, the IUML will be happier with the result as there were concerns about possible erosion of its votes as Shoukath was not in the good books of the party. But through systematic work at the grassroot level, the IUML ensured Shoukath's victory and proved the party's strength in Malappuram district, its home turf.
Equally happy would be Satheesan, who took all the crucial decisions beginning from selecting the candidate to accepting the votes of the Welfare Party, the political arm of the Jamaat-e-Islami. The result has boosted his position in the party and among the possible contenders for the chief minister's post in the event of a UDF victory in the next Assembly polls.

According to the report, Vijayan, in his letter to Governor Rajendra Arlekar, mentioned that the use of Bharat Mata images was 'not in line with the Constitution" at official events. The southern state has been witnessing a tussle between Arlekar and the Marxist party-led LDF government over the display of the Bharat Mata portrait during official events at the Raj Bhavan. The row led to an intense war of words and street protests. Earlier too, Chief Minister Vijayan had reportedly conveyed to the Governor about the government's dissent in using anything other than national symbols during official functions, news agency PTI quoted sources. On Saturday, Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty strongly criticised the Governor for the act and labelled it a 'blatant violation" of constitutional norms. The minister also termed the portrait, depicting a woman holding a saffron flag, as a 'religious image". A person holding a constitutional post worshipping such an image during official events is 'tantamount to subverting the basic principles of the Constitution", he said at a press conference in Kozhikode. In response to a question, he emphasised that the Preamble of the country declares it a secular democratic republic. These Articles mandate the state's neutrality in religious matters. 'So, this action by the Governor is a blatant attack on the secular nature of the Indian Constitution. This is not only a violation of protocol, but also an act that undermines the secular values guaranteed by the Constitution," Sivankutty said. The minister also justified his recent decision to boycott an official function held at Raj Bhavan over the display of the portrait.

Congress won Nilambur bypoll with Jamaat-e-Islami's support: Kerala BJP chief Chandrasekhar
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 29 (ANI): Kerala State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar claimed on Sunday that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won the recent Nilambur Assembly by-election due to support from Jamaat-e-Islami, which he described as an 'illegal, anti-national, and anti-constitutional' organisation.' 'This is neither a victory of the Congress party nor of the UDF. This is a victory for Jamaat-e-Islami,' Chandrasekhar told ANI. 'This is a victory for Nilambur in particular. For the UDF, this has been possible due to two reasons: the active support of the Jamaat-e-Islami, which is an illegal, anti-national, and anti-constitutional organisation, and the division of the CPM votes... While the UDF views Nilambur as reflecting the sentiment of Kerala, the majority of Kerala is unlikely to vote for the Jamaat-e-Islami's mandate... It is an extremely dangerous and desperate political move by the Congress to bring the Jamaat-e-Islami into the mainstream,' the BJP leader said. Shoukath had secured 77,737 votes, a lead of 11,077 votes from M Swaraj of the CPM after 19 rounds of counting. Earlier reacting to the bypoll results, CPI(M) State secretary MV Govindan had said the UDF conducted a communally divisive campaign using the its alliance with the 'radical Islamist' Jama'at-e-Islami as a front. The CPI (M) leader said that the UDF opened the door for Islamist and Hindu majoritarian outfits to leverage votes through schismatic communal messaging. The IUML and Congress have abandoned broad-based party politics. Instead, they have stoked profoundly divisive identity politics for electoral gain, Govindan said. The bypoll for the Nilambur seat was necessitated after the resignation of Left Democratic Front independent legislator PV Anvar, who later joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) after his acrimonious break-up with the ruling alliance. In its official statement, Congress in Kerala had said, 'Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has won the Nilambur assembly constituency, a sitting seat of the ruling CPM combine, by a huge margin of over 11,000 votes.
