UK threatens jail for people smugglers who advertise on social media

CNA2 days ago
LONDON: People smugglers who use social media to promote their services to migrants seeking to enter Britain illegally could face five years in prison under plans announced by the government.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government is under huge political and public pressure to cut the number of migrants arriving illegally in small boats from France. More than 25,000 people have made the crossing so far this year.
Analysis by the Interior Ministry showed around 80 per cent of migrants arriving on small boats had used social media during their journey to find or communicate with people smugglers.
Under a new offence, which will be added to legislation already passing through parliament, individuals who post online to advertise services that facilitate a breach of immigration laws will face fines and prison sentences of up to five years.
It is already an offence to facilitate illegal immigration to Britain, but the government said its latest plan would give law enforcement agencies another option to disrupt the criminal gangs that profit from organising the crossings.
Last month, the government launched a new sanctions regime allowing it to freeze assets, impose travel bans and block access to the country's financial system for individuals and entities involved in enabling irregular migration.

Ex-Arsenal player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault

LONDON :Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with raping two women while he was a player for the English Premier League soccer club. Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old, who British media have reported is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer, sat in the dock dressed in black during the brief hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court. He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for 50 million euros ($57.7 million) in 2020 and became a key member of Arsenal's first team. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. ($1 = 0.8663 euros)

Eutelsat beats earnings estimates on Ukraine boost, government demand

French satellite operator Eutelsat reported better-than-expected annual earnings on Tuesday, driven by growing interest in its satellite internet services from government and corporate customers. Eutelsat gained the spotlight this year as European governments sought home-grown solutions for satellite services, aiming to reduce their reliance on U.S. providers. Revenues from video, connectivity and government services reached 1.23 billion euros ($1.43 billion) in the year ended June 30, up 0.8 per cent from a year earlier. Financial analysts had expected those revenues to total 1.21 billion euros, according to a consensus poll provided by Eutelsat. The Paris-based group hopes to offset declining income from its video business by gaining a foothold in the satellite internet market, where SpaceX's Starlink dominates. Eutelsat said revenues from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites rose 84.1 per cent yearly to 187 million euros. Higher revenues for government services reflected services delivered in Ukraine and increased demand from other non-U.S. governments, the company said. The German government has been paying for Ukraine's access to Eutelsat's network for about a year. Eutelsat expects LEO revenues to grow by 50 per cent next year, saying it will compensate, but not yet outweigh the decline in its legacy business, which are impacted by additional Russian sanctions. However, the operator said it took a 1.1 billion euro loss through the year, partly due to impairments from its geostationary (GEO) assets. In addition to its 34 GEO satellites - mostly used for broadcasting and fixed satellite internet - Eutelsat owns a constellation of over 600 in low Earth orbit, managed by its London-based subsidiary OneWeb, which was acquired in 2023. The company is undergoing a radical shake-up following the appointment of a new CEO and a chairman as well as new injections of capital led by the French state alongside Britain and other anchor shareholders for 1.5 billion euros. Leon Neal/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo LONDON - Britain said it would begin implementing a deal to return migrants who arrive on small boats to France within days after a treaty on the arrangement - a key part of British plans to cut illegal migration - is ratified on Tuesday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron announced the "one in, one out" pilot scheme on migrant returns last month. Under the new deal, France has agreed to accept the return of undocumented people arriving in Britain by small boats, in exchange for Britain agreeing to accept an equal number of legitimate asylum seekers with British family connections. A treaty on the scheme was signed last week but not previously announced ahead of Tuesday's ratification. Britain said the European Commission and EU member states had given the green light to the plan. Starmer, whose popularity has fallen since winning an election landslide last year, is facing pressure to stop small boat arrivals from the populist Reform UK party, led by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage. Britain's interior ministry said it expected detentions to begin within days. "This is an important step towards undermining the business model of the organised crime gangs that are behind these crossings," British interior minister Yvette Cooper said. Top stories Swipe. More than 25,000 people have arrived on small boats so far in 2025, and the government has targeted people smugglers with sanctions, clamped down on social media adverts and is working with delivery firms to tackle the illegal work that is often promised to migrants.
