French-Moroccan killed after trying to stop a violent altercation
According to Le Parisien, a confrontation broke out between Abdel's group and a man using cocaine in a parked car. The individual, identified as Walid B., a homeless man, was reportedly told to leave the area. Tensions escalated when he allegedly threatened the group with a box cutter before being chased away. He later returned, this time behind the wheel of his car.
According to preliminary findings, he tried to run over several people. Abdel, who was reportedly trying to calm things down, was violently hit, dragged for several meters, and thrown to the ground. He died from a head injury three days later.
Married and the father of a young daughter, Abdel was well known and respected in his neighborhood. Born in France to Moroccan parents, he had previously worked as an ambulance driver before moving into the security field. «Abdel was the calm, composed guy who hated conflict. That he left us like this is tragic», a close friend told Le Parisien.
The driver has been charged with murder and placed in pre-trial detention. While he denies the accusations, videos filmed by witnesses may confirm the intentional nature of the act. Another person, who was involved in confronting the suspect before the tragedy, has also been charged.
A funeral prayer will be held at the mosque in Corbeil-Essonnes before his body is repatriated to Morocco. A fundraiser has also been launched to support his family.

14 Arrests in Spain Amid Anti-Migrants Riots, Moroccan Community Calls for Peace, Calm
Rabat – Spanish authorities have arrested at least 14 people for their alleged involvement in riots, particularly anti-migrant clashes, since Friday last week. Spain, especially Murcia, has been witnessing violent clashes and riots targeting migrants, particularly Moroccans, since the assault of a 68-year-old Spaniard in Torre Pacheco in southeastern Spain. Reports alleged that the assault was perpetrated by three men of North African origin, potentially from Morocco. One of the suspects is a 19-year-old who is allegedly the main perpetrator. Since Friday, authorities arrested over 14 suspects, the majority of whom are Spanish nationals, for being involved in anti-migrant riots and violent clashes targeting Moroccans. The tension was fueled by far-right groups like Vox, which launched a manhunt and urged targeting migrants, particularly Moroccans. Reuters quoted Abdelali, an informal spokesperson for the Moroccan community who lives in Murcia, launching a peace appeal amid the critical situation. 'We don't want criminals,' he said, condemning the violence. 'We don't want violence or people who come from outside to make trouble here.' Reports emphasize that people arrested in connection with the assault on the 68-year-old man were not from Torre Pacheco. Some critics have suspected the situation, suggesting far-right involvement in the case to stir tensions and violence in the region. Many have joined growing lists of politicians and communities condemning the violence and calling for calm. The Moroccan consulate in Murcia reiterated its solidarity with Moroccans in the region, reassuring citizens that it is in constant contact with Spanish authorities to ensure security guarantees are provided to Moroccans. It also expressed condemnation of violent, hostile actions against members of the Moroccan community. Anti-migrant sentiment and Islamophobia is not a new challenge in Spain and Europe in general. A report from OHCHR said that at least 17 cases have been reported to NGOs by young women on their first day of class in 2020. The complainants mostly reported being denied entrance to their high schools because they wear a hijab. This is despite the absence of any formal legislation prohibiting the hijab. 'Political leaders who openly use Islamophobia in their public discourses usually belong to far-right Vox or right-wing PP,' the report said. The OHCHR report emphasized that while until 2017 Islamophobic hate speech was 'noticeably clear, especially after each terror attack, the years after it became interlaced with xenophobic hate speech against North African migrants and more specifically against migrant unaccompanied minors.' Spain arrests leader of far-right group targeting Moroccan migrants in Torre Pacheco
The Spanish Civil Guard in Barcelona arrested a man on Monday evening suspected of leading the far-right Telegram group «Deport Them Now», which had called for «hunts» targeting Moroccan migrants in the town of Torre Pacheco, in the Murcia region, according to Spanish media reports. Spain's Ministry of the Interior announced that the group's Telegram channel has been shut down. An investigating judge in San Javier is handling the case, and two computers were seized as evidence. Torre Pacheco has been rocked by unrest in recent days, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals and the identification of 120 others, many with prior records of violent offenses. The tension erupted last Wednesday after two young men attacked a retiree, triggering violent retaliation against migrants, particularly those of Moroccan origin. The arrested suspect is accused of holding a leadership role within Deport Them Now and faces charges of incitement to hatred. Last week, the group published a statement on social media explicitly calling for a «hunt» targeting Moroccans in Torre Pacheco. The group promotes the expulsion of migrants from Europe, as stated in a welcome message to new members: «You have decided to join Deport Them Now – the European Union to contribute to the largest deportation campaign in European history. Express your opinion freely and become an active member through demonstrations and other activities across the continent. Welcome to our white brotherhood».

Spanish PM, Moroccan Consulate Condemn Hostile Attacks on Moroccans, Migrants
Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has responded to the troubling wave of racism and Islamophobic attacks targeting Muslims and migrants in Spain following an assault on a 68-year-old Spaniard in Torre Pacheco, in southeastern Spain. Far-right party Vox has been fueling the tensions with acutely Islamophobic and anti-migrant rhetoric. There have been social media posts and protests, calling for 'the hunt' of migrants from North Africa, especially Moroccans, blaming them for the assault that took place last week on Friday. Vox and far-right media held anti-Islam and migrants protests, chanting Islamophobic slogans and inciting hatred and violence against migrants in the European country amid an ongoing investigation and arrests of suspects allegedly involved in the incident. Responding on X, Sanchez said on Monday that 'racism is incompatible with democracy,' noting that what the country is witnessing in Torre Pacheco 'concerns us all.' 'We must speak out, act firmly, and defend the values that unite us. Spain is a country of rights, not of hate,' he said. The Moroccan consulate in Murcia also released a statement, expressing condemnation of violent, hostile actions against members of the Moroccan community in the region. The local representative said recent events have been marked by 'provocation, intimidation, and targeted violence' against Moroccans, who are now enduring a state of 'deep anxiety and tangible fear.' The consulate stressed that it is constantly in touch with relevant Spanish authorities to ensure all necessary security guarantees are provided to Moroccans. 'We express our unconditional support to those affected and affirm our commitment to preserving their moral and physical integrity,' the statement concluded. Moroccans remain the largest foreign community affiliated with Spanish social security, with 375,042 workers. Tags: bilateral ties between Morocco and SpainSpain and Morocco
