Heavyweights call for Jones to be stripped - what happens next?

BBC News19-06-2025
With the future of the UFC heavyweight division continuing to remain unclear, a number of fighters have called for Jon Jones to be stripped of his title.American Jones last fought in November, defending his belt against Stipe Miocic instead of facing Britain's interim champion Tom Aspinall.Aspinall, 32, has held the interim belt for 18 months and despite a number of pleas for a unification bout with Jones, the fight has yet to materialise.UFC president Dana White says the promotion has been trying to finalise the contest, but Jones is yet to commit, teasing Aspinall on social media and hinting at retirement. Before his heavyweight bout in Baku, Azerbaijan this weekend, American Curtis Blaydes said the UFC should take the title off Jones."If he doesn't fight I would like him to be stripped. We all get it. He's the GOAT, he's great, but if you're not going to be active, what are you doing holding the belt?" said Blaydes."I get what he's doing. He enjoys this. He enjoys his name being talked about. I'm over it already."Blaydes' opponent Risvan Kuniev echoed his thoughts, calling for Jones to be stripped and describing Aspinall as the "true champion".With the UFC heavyweight division in still in limbo, BBC Sport looks at what could happen next.
Jones v Aspinall actually happens
This is the ideal scenario with White describing the potential matchup as the "biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history".Jones, 37, is a former light-heavyweight champion and widely considered one of, if not the best, MMA fighter of all time.He has an overall record of 28 wins, one loss and one no-contest, and holds the record for most title fight wins in the UFC, with 16.Aspinall, meanwhile, has finished all eight of his fights in the UFC and holds a number of records, including the shortest fight time average in the promotion's history, at two minutes and two seconds. The UFC are trying to make the fight happen with New York in November and Las Vegas in December being the most likely options for the event to take place.Aspinall wants the bout, but the sticking point is Jones.Jones has been non-committal, suggesting he is retired, saying fighting Aspinall does "nothing for his legacy", and instead calling out former champion Francis Ngannou. As the months tick by with no solution between the UFC, Jones and Aspinall, hopes of the bout taking place are dwindling.
Aspinall is promoted to undisputed
Should Jones be stripped or bring the curtain down on his distinguished career like he has been hinting, Aspinall would become the first Briton to unify the UFC heavyweight division. It is 586 days since Aspinall beat Sergei Pavlovich with his interim title reign being the longest in UFC history. The previous record was former interim bantamweight title holder Renan Barao, with the Brazilian holding the belt for 534 days.Although Aspinall has repeatedly called for the bout with Jones, he has added that he has no problem with the American - he just wants to become the undisputed champion.Earlier this month White described Aspinall as "the man" and said the Briton's next fight will be for the undisputed title. But if Jones retires or is stripped of his belt, who could be the other contenders?
Gane, Volkov and Almeida could challenge
Should Aspinall be promoted to undisputed heavyweight champion, France's Ciryl Gane is the most likely candidate to first challenge for the belt. The 35-year-old is a former interim champion and has twice missed out on the undisputed crown - to Ngannou in 2022 and Jones the following year.Since the defeat by Jones, Gane has won two fights and climbed to second in the UFC heavyweight rankings.Aspinall has previously called for a fight with Gane, but the bout didn't materialise.Other contenders who could face Aspinall are Russia's Alexander Volkov and Brazil's Jailton Almeida, with the Briton recently saying on his YouTube he had been training with the potential of fighting either.Volkov, 36, is third in the heavyweight rankings and lost to Aspinall in 2022.He has won four of his last five fights but suffered a narrow defeat in December to Gane.Almeida, 33, meanwhile, is sixth in the UFC rankings and is on a two-fight win streak.

Two-goal hero Cole Palmer says Chelsea silenced doubters with Club World Cup win

Cole Palmer hit back at Chelsea's critics after firing them to Club World Cup glory in New York. The England international scored two fine goals and set up a third for Joao Pedro as the Blues claimed a stunning 3-0 win over Champions League winners Paris St Germain at the MetLife Stadium. Victory, which landed the Blues a jackpot in excess of £90million, was also a tactical triumph for manager Enzo Maresca. Asked about how the team is developing under the Italian, Palmer told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team. 'Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.' Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good. 'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. Obviously he knew where the space was going to be and he tried to free me up as much as possible, and I just had to repay him and score some goals.' Palmer – whose double and assist all came within the space of 21 first-half minutes – was also the decisive player as Chelsea beat Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final in May. Maresca said: 'These are the games where we expect Cole to appear – big games and big moments – and once again he showed how good he is.' The tournament itself has been controversial and derided in many quarters but Maresca is in no doubt of the prestige it will bring the club. As well as the significant prize money, Chelsea will be entitled to wear a badge on their shirts confirming their status as world champions for the next four years. Maresca said: 'I think it will become as important as the Champions League and we value it as much as winning the Champions League. 'It has been the (best) effort from the team and all the players. I am very happy, especially for them because they deserve the moment. 'Had you told me we were going to win 3-0 in the first half I wouldn't have expected that but we knew we were going to put up a fight and we knew our squad is really competitive against talented teams.' PSG's misery was complete five minutes from time when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair. Frustration was also evident as scuffles broke out after the final whistle. PSG manager Luis Enrique became involved in one incident that ended with Pedro on the ground. Enrique said: 'I saw Maresca had pushed others (away) and we had to separate all the players. 'This is a situation we must all avoid. My intention is that I wanted to separate the footballers so the situation didn't become worse.'

Bombshell LeBron James trade rumors erupt as 'FOUR teams reach out to his agent Rich Paul'

The bombshell revelation that multiple teams have expressed interest in trading for Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has shocked the NBA. James' future with the Lakers has been the subject of plenty of speculation in the offseason - which only ramped up on Saturday night. ESPN's Dave McMenamin invited James onto a broadcast of an NBA Summer League game featuring his son Bronny James to address his future - only for LeBron to reply, 'I ain't got nothing to talk about'. However, McMenamin did report that four NBA teams had reached out to the Lakers to try and acquire him. While McMenamin didn't reveal the identities of the four teams in his report, others later revealed those who were interested. According to NBA insider Brandon 'Scoop B' Robinson, the teams hoping to make a move for James are the Dallas Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Los Angeles Clippers. The biggest surprise on this list might be the Mavericks, considering the two teams were at the center of a shocking trade in the middle of the season when the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic while sending Anthony Davis and other pieces to Dallas. For the Mavericks to now turn around and want James would be a bit surprising. However, it would re-unite him with Davis and former teammate Kyrie Irving. LeBron would also serve as something of a mentor to the Mavericks' first-round draft pick, Cooper Flagg. James previously praised Flagg after a training session before the Paris Olympics in 2024. Turning to Golden State, James would get the chance to be teammates with Steph Curry for the first time in a non-Team USA capacity. James would also form an aging 'Big Three' with Curry and mid-season acquisition Jimmy Butler. But LeBron also has a weird history with Golden State - having faced them in four consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 2015-2018 as a member of the Cavaliers. LeBron would win the 2016 Finals, but lost the other three appearances. Which brings us to Cleveland. If the Cavs traded for him, it would be LeBron's third stint with his hometown team and would serve as a fitting team for him to retire on. Cleveland also is in the midst of a competitive window having finished atop the Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season. Finally, there's the Clippers. LeBron would be able to switch to a more competitive team while staying in the same city. Plus, adding him to a roster with the likes of James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Ben Simmons would be a strong lineup. However, it would be something of a surprise if the Lakers decided to trade one of their biggest stars to their cross-town rivals. The Clippers and Lakers have only been partners in seven trades throughout their history, with the most recent one involving just the two teams coming in 2019 - when the Lakers gave up Michael Beasley and Ivica Zubac to the Clippers for Mike Muscala.

St. Louis starter Sonny Gray allowed one run on three hits in three innings before rain halted the game. He struck out five and walked none. Harris hit a single and went to third on Profar's single. Profar advanced to second on a throwing error. Olson stroked a two-run single before the rain returned. After a delay exceeding 2 hours, 40 minutes, the Cardinals tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning. Scott walked and went to third on Alec Burleson's single, then Contreras popped a two-run double down the right field line. St. Louis moved ahead 5-3 in the sixth inning on a single by Winn and Fermin's homer. Atlanta cut its deficit to 5-4 in the seventh inning.
