Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito's best One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest stories as it hits 50

Jack Nicholson did not want to go to the Oscars. It was 1976 and he was nominated for best actor in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The Milos Forman film, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, had become a bit of a sensation – it was the second-highest-grossing picture of 1975, behind Jaws, and had received nine Oscar nominations. But Nicholson was not feeling optimistic. In five years, he had already been nominated five times. He had also lost five times. He told his producer, Michael Douglas – who would go on to win his own best actor Oscar in 1988 – that he could not go through it again. 'I remember how hard I had to persuade Jack to come to the ceremony,' Douglas says. 'He was so reluctant, but we got him there. 'And then of course we lost the first four awards. Jack was sitting right in front of me and sort of leaned back and said 'Oh, Mikey D, Mikey D, I told you, man.' I just said, 'Hang in there.'' One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would go on to sweep the 'big five' – best screenplay, director, actor, actress and picture – the first film to do so since It Happened One Night 41 years previously. Only The Silence of the Lambs has done it since.

Macau's Zhu claims WTT US Smash victory, then hails ‘eye-catching' display by Chen

Macau's Zhu Yuling won the World Table Tennis (WTT) US Smash women's singles title in Las Vegas on Sunday, and then praised the 'eye-catching' performance of her beaten opponent Chen Yi. Chen had captured the imagination of fans in mainland China after eliminating some of the game's biggest stars, including world No 1 Sun Yingsha, en route to the final. But Zhu, herself a former world No 1, battled back from two games down to win 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 at the Orleans Arena. 'I hope everyone will give Chen a round of applause,' Zhu said. 'Her performance was very eye-catching. 'She has experience beyond her age, and watching her was like seeing myself when I was younger.' ‘Dora the Explorer' celebrates her 25th anniversary

Twenty-five years ago, a little girl with short hair appeared on our television screens, speaking a mix of English and Spanish. She had a can-do spirit, a backpack, a monkey friend and upbeat songs. She was, of course, Dora, the first Latina to lead a major cartoon series. The show, Dora the Explorer, was a multicultural children's programming success. Nickelodeon is celebrating Dora's 25th anniversary this year with a feature-length live-action film, Dora and the Search of Sol Dorado. The children's television channel will also air a third season of the rebooted animated series Dora and release a podcast and an album. Dora celebrates Latin culture – language, food, dress and music, said Ramsey Naito, president of animation at Paramount and Nickelodeon.
