T20 Blast begins with wins for Lancs and Sussex
This year's T20 Blast got under way with opening night victories for troubled Lancashire Lightning and last season's semi-finalists Sussex Sharks. A day after the departure of head coach Dale Benkenstein after a bad start to the season, Lancashire secured a tense seven-run victory over Worcestershire Rapids at Emirates Old Trafford.Captain Keaton Jennings led from the front in their North Group encounter as his side posted 176-8 with no Worcestershire batter going past 39 as they only made 169-7. In the South Group, Sussex began with a 16-run win at Lord's over Middlesex aided by a fine 77 not out from James Coles in their 202-4.Despite 51 from Ben Geddes and some lusty hitting from Ryan Higgins, the home side never looked in contention as they ended on 186-7.
Morale booster for Lancs
It has been a dreadful start to the season in the County Championship for Lancashire, who named former T20-winning captain Steven Croft as interim head coach, with no wins from their seven games.Jennings had already resigned as red-ball captain and the club apologised to its members before Benkenstein's exit.Back in charge for the T20 Blast, Jennings brought up his 50 off 30 balls and put on 79 for the first wicket with Luke Wells.But a brilliant catch in the deep from Ethan Brookes removed Jennings and halted Lancashire's progress, and the hosts lost five wickets for 22 runs to keep the target to under nine runs an over.When Kashif Ali smashed 39 off 21 balls, the Rapids were well over the required rate and on course for an away win.But the loss of captain Brett D'Oliveira (30) and Adam Hose (13) to reduce Worcestershire to 93-4 after 10.1 overs changed the complexion of the game.From there, Lancashire turned the screw and with the visitors needing 15 runs off the last over, Tom Aspinwall conceded just seven to deliver a morale-boosting first win of the season in any competition.
Sharks start strongly
Middlesex have been perennial strugglers in the South Group, unable to reach the quarter-finals for six years and without a Finals Day appearance since they won the competition in 2008.After winning the toss, they chipped away at Sussex's top order, helped by Tom Helm running out Daniel Hughes at the non-striker's end when the Australian was well set on 38.But Coles' best T20 score from 44 balls held the innings together as he put on an unbroken 88 with Tom Clark (26 not out) to take the score past 200.New Zealand star Kane Williamson, on his Middlesex debut, was spectacularly caught for 14 at deep point by a diving Harrison Ward, who almost lost his trousers in the process. However, they were soon behind the required rate and at 136-5 early in the 17th over, the game looked over.Higgins hit 44 off just 16 balls to give them a glimmer of hope until he was bowled by Ollie Robinson in the last over as the England bowler finished with an impressive 3-27.

Nat Sciver-Brunt insisted England are 'not at panic stations' despite succumbing to their heaviest T20 defeat by runs after being put to the sword by India stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana. England started the summer by clean sweeping the West Indies in T20s and ODIs but Sciver-Brunt and head coach Charlotte Edwards got their first reality check following India's 97-run victory at Trent Bridge. Some sloppy mistakes in the field and a largely toothless bowling display allowed India to rack up 210 for five, powered by Mandhana's majestic 112 off 62 balls, before England were rolled for 113. The hosts lost eight of their 10 wickets to spin, with debutant Shree Charani claiming four for 12, to go 1-0 down in the five-match series but Sciver-Brunt was typically phlegmatic in her assessment. 'I won't change too much about how I go about things,' she said after suffering her first loss as permanent England captain. 'My personality is pretty steady, not too many ups and downs. 'That's the way I go about it and I'll make sure the girls know we're not at panic stations, so they've still got that confidence and belief that they can go out there and do it. 'I think everyone will self-reflect on how they did and whether they were in the right mindset with the bat or whether the plan was right with the ball and it was just the execution (was not right). 'It would be unrealistic to think we'll win every game but we'll pick ourselves back up, review really well and go again in Bristol (in Tuesday's second T20).' England lost 40 wickets to spin during last winter's 16-0 Ashes whitewash defeat and, after conceding their second highest T20 total, only Sciver-Brunt showed any resistance against India's turners. Sciver-Brunt registered 66 off 42 balls, while Em Arlott was the next highest scorer with just 12, at the outset of India's tour where the teams will play four more T20s before a three-match one-day international series. 'A lot of our girls have done some great work against spin, especially during the middle (overs),' Sciver-Brunt said. 'I expect us to be showing what skills we've learnt. 'We've got eight matches against them so you can plot your way around it and work out plans. It makes it more exciting and the challenge more fun for me to work out how you're going to do that.' Sophie Ecclestone leaked 43 runs in three overs on her return to action, having missed the Windies series with a knee injury then taken time out of domestic cricket to 'prioritise her wellbeing'. Her first and fourth balls were both slog-swept into a strong wind for six by Mandhana, captaining India in place of the injured Harmanpreet Kaur, as she conceded 19 in her first over. Ecclestone gained a measure of revenge when Mandhana miscued the slow left-armer, lofting her straight up in the air to a backtracking Sciver-Brunt in the ring, but the damage had already been done. 'I said 'welcome back',' Sciver-Brunt added. 'She's been away but she's really glad to back and we're glad to have her. 'When someone goes for 19 in their first over, you don't write them off, especially if the name is Sophie Ecclestone.'

CHELSEA have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign Jamie Gittens. Talks had been progressing in the US, where both teams are taking part in the Club World Cup. And despite Bayern Munich also being interested, a deal has now been agreed for the 20-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge. Gittens will undergo his medical tonight on the US, before finalising a seven-year-deal until 2032, worth £50million with £5million in add-ons. Earlier this month, Dortmund turned down an offer worth £42m, and the two clubs were unable to agree a deal before the first window closed on 10 June. This eventual agreement comes amid Chelsea 's search to strengthen wide areas after rejecting their obligation to buy Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. Gittens contributed 12 goals and five assists in 48 games in all competitions for Dortmund last season. But the England U21 international and former Reading youth product has struggled with illness and hardly played in the USA. The Blues have already spent £1.4billion to assemble their current squad, but club transfer chiefs are desperate to bring their former youth star back home. Gittens, who previously had a very brief spell with Chelsea's U9s, was part of the England side that won the U19 European Championships in 2022. Novak Djokovic figures Wimbledon gives him his best chance at a record 25th Grand Slam title
It's become part of Novak Djokovic 's routine now, particularly at Grand Slam tournaments: He shows up and gets asked — at the start of the event, during the event, after the event or sometimes all three — whether this will be his final appearance there. Happened again Saturday at Wimbledon, and his response was the same it tends to be, which essentially amounts to: Who can tell? 'Whether it could be my 'last dance,'' the 24-time major champion began, repeating the phrase used by the reporter who posed the question, 'I'm not sure — as I'm not sure about Roland Garros or any other Slam that I play next.' And then Djokovic continued, offering something of a mix of seemingly trying to quiet any talk about whether he truly is pondering retirement at age 38 while also being realistic about where things stand. 'My wish is to play for several more years. I would love to be healthy physically and also mentally motivated to keep on playing at the highest level,' he said. 'That's the goal. But you never know at this stage.' What Djokovic did concede is that the All England Club might offer the likeliest spot for him to gather one more Grand Slam singles title, which would allow him to raise his career haul to 25 — a number that no tennis player ever has reached. 'I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best chance, because of the results I had, because of how I feel, how I play in Wimbledon,' said Djokovic, who faces Alexandre Muller in the first round Tuesday. 'Just getting that extra push mentally and motivation to perform the best tennis at the highest level.' Djokovic has won seven championships at the grass-court major and come oh-so-close to making his total eight — the number Roger Federer won, and one behind Martina Navratilova's record nine women's trophies — but lost in the 2023 and 2024 finals to Carlos Alcaraz. As for the persistent questions about Djokovic's future, it's the same type of topic that was presented to Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams as those greats of the game neared their farewells. Now it's just Djokovic's turn. But just because he hasn't won a Grand Slam trophy in more than 1 1/2 years — he collected three in 2023, capped by the U.S. Open that September — don't think that Djokovic isn't capable of grabbing another. As he reminded anyone listening Saturday, he made it to the semifinals at the Australian Open this January before stopping after one set because of a hamstring injury, and got to the final four at the French Open this month before losing to No. 1 Jannik Sinner. After that one, Djokovic took time as he left the court to kiss his hand and lean down to touch the clay, then said it could have been his last match at Roland-Garros. There also was the not-so-small achievement of claiming a gold medal for Serbia at the Paris Olympics less than a year ago by beating Alcaraz, no less. 'These tournaments give me the biggest drive, still,' Djokovic said. 'I like the way I feel right now, physically. Tennis-wise, I've been playing good on the practice sessions. Obviously completely different when you start a tournament. I'll try to have a very good tournament and go as far as I can.' And maybe even return in 2026. ___
