Why all-rounder Danny swapped Rovers for cricket as part of sporting family

Danny Lamb is an all-rounder in more ways than one. The Sussex batter and seam bowler was eyeing a career as a goalkeeper with Blackburn Rovers as a teenager. He will quite happily grab a Vitality Blast quarter-final spot with both hands if the opportunity arises. Sussex Sharks host Surrey at a packed Hove this evening (6.30pm) with the significance of the final South Group fixture increased by a win at Gloucestershire yesterday. Lamb held his nerve to hit 16 runs off five balls and carry Sharks to a dramatic last-ball four-wicket win. Chasing a victory target of 186, Sharks required 15 runs off the final over, bowled by David Payne. Lamb clubbed three boundaries, including one off the final ball, to stun a large Festival audience into silence and end Gloucestershire's defence of the title they lifted last year. Both Danny and his sister Emma have had a big cricketing week, the latter playing for England. So they are a good symbol of how men's and women's games are coming together in the Blast this season. But, while they shared a love of sport, they were not exactly bowling at each other in the back garden all day as kids. Danny said: 'We did a lot together but not as much as what people think. I wanted to be a footballer! 'I always enjoyed my cricket but I was at Blackburn Rovers until I was 16. 'I wanted to be a goalkeeper. I wasn't quite tall enough - or good enough, to be honest. 'The decision was made for me, really, but I think it has worked out well. 'I don't know what level I would have got to. 'We always played different sports. I'd say we are both pretty good all-rounders in that respect, pardon the cricketing pun. 'I played a lot of tennis growing up. A lot of badminton, netball. 'I wouldn't say it was all on cricket from the start. 'It just sort of went that way. 'But I was always on the academy pathway at Lancashire so I always maintained a good level with that.' Whatever the permutations of the South Group, Sussex would love to sign off with a Hove win. Their two previous Friday games at the 1st Central County Ground have both been big disappointments at a unique venue which should offer home advantage. Lamb said: 'It feels quite intimate. The crowd is really on top of you and that should be a home advantage – and it is. 'When they are up and about, it really gets the lads firing.'

Five for McAndrew as Sussex turn on the Blast style at Hove

Sussex Sharks consigned Glamorgan to a chastening defeat at Hove in the T20 Vitality Blast. Half centuries from Tom Alsop and James Coles set up a commanding total, before Nathan McAndrew blew through a shell-shocked Glamorgan batting line-up to seal victory by 78 runs. Advertisement It leaves Sussex on three wins from four games as they make a strong start in the short format. After Sussex won the toss and elected to bat, Dan Hughes fell for one after slashing at a wider delivery from seamer Jamie McIlroy, skewing it to short third man where van der Gugten took a sharp catch. Fellow opener Harrison Ward came out with plenty of positive intent, sweeping off spinner Ben Kellaway's first ball for six, and striking two fours and a flat, square six off seamer Dan Douthwaite's first over. He fell for an enterprising 38 from 23, skying Mason Crane's second ball, with Kiran Karlson running backwards from mid off and taking an excellent catch. Advertisement John Simpson looked like he was trying to anchor the Sussex innings, but fell lbw to Kellaway for 26 from 23 balls after missing an attempted sweep. Coles came out the blocks quickly, plundering a four and six from consecutive Crane deliveries, and reaching 50 in just 33 deliveries. Alsop continued his good recent form, striking sixes with ease down the ground and over mid wicket. He brought up a rapid half century from only 26 balls, before hitting McIlroy straight to long on, departing for exactly 50. Andy Gorvin's deceptive dibbly-dobblers proved difficult to get away, with the medium pacer conceding only 26 from his four overs, including just a single boundary, but Dan Douthwaite was expensive, leaking 48 from three overs. Advertisement Coles finished the innings in style, hitting the final ball for six to finish 75 not out, setting Glamorgan 195 to win. A short ball from Ollie Robinson brought the first wicket, with Kiran Carlson only able to plink it to Coles at midwicket, falling for 12 from 12. Kelleway showed that he wasn't going to hang around, hitting his second ball from Robinson down the ground for six off, but then clipped McAndrew straight to Tom Clark at deep fine leg, departing for ten. The excitement in the ground rose when Colin Ingram was then dismissed first ball, getting a fine edge on an unexpected bouncer, leaving McAndrew on a hat-trick. Advertisement Chris Cooke almost gave the crowd the moment of ecstasy they craved, but the hat-trick ball flew just past his outside edge. Concluding the powerplay on 46-3, Glamorgan were already on the back foot and needing to play catch up. Instead, their fourth wicket fell to Coles' off spin, with a full looping delivery that yorked the disappointed looking Smale, who fell for 19 from 18. Things only got worse for the Welsh outfit when Cooke nicked behind off McAndrew in the next over, before Douthwaite was clean bowled by another McAndrew beauty that clipped the top of middle stump three deliveries later. Unbelievably, McAndrew once again found himself on a potential hat-trick when Timm Van der Gutgen spliced his first ball to Alsop at point, with Glamorgan having lost two wickets with the score on 40, two on 47, and two on 49. Advertisement McAndrew's second hat-trick ball passed without drama, but the Australian seamer ended with the spectacular figures of 5-12. Crane (25 off 19) and Asa Tribe (34 off 21) tried to get their team towards a respectable total, but it was too little, too late, and Glamorgan suffered a brutal defeat after being bowled out for 117, with McAndrew the star of the show.

Coles' career-best helps Sussex to winning start at Lord's

James Coles smashed a career-best unbeaten 77 from 44 balls to set up a winning start to the Vitality Blast for Sussex Sharks as they held off Middlesex at Lord's. The 21-year-old's destructive knock, which included five sixes and five fours, underpinned his unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 88 from 47 with Tom Clark and ensured that last year's Blast semi-finalists totalled 202 for four. That proved to be enough as the home side fell just short at 186 for seven in reply, despite a maiden T20 half-century by Ben Geddes (51 from 37) and Ryan Higgins' fearless late display of hitting to rack up 44 from 16. Middlesex made an early breakthrough after winning the toss and opting to bowl, with Noah Cornwell's opening delivery dragged on by Harrison Ward before John Simpson (22 from 12) and Daniel Hughes really got the scoreboard moving. Hughes began to open up after Simpson's departure, flaying Henry Brookes for successive leg-side sixes but the Australian's knock of 38 from 20 came to an abrupt end as Tom Helm's fingertips deflected Coles' drive onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. Luke Hollman's astute spell of one for 38 prevented Sussex from gaining greater traction – although the leg-spinner's figures were dented by a trio of sixes from Coles, who advanced to his third T20 half-century by drilling Cornwell over his head for four. With Clark (26 from 21) taking on a supporting role, Coles scooped Higgins for another maximum as the pair accelerated during the death overs, taking 29 from the final nine balls of the innings to clamber above 200. Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, making his Middlesex debut, provided brief fireworks at the start of their reply, hitting two sixes in 14 from 12 before he fell to Ward's smart diving catch on the point boundary. But, although Geddes pummelled both Tymal Mills and Brad Currie over the fence, Sussex's seamers achieved a degree of accuracy that had eluded the home bowlers and the required run-rate soon soared. Stephen Eskinazi (34 from 30) shared a partnership of 58 from 45 with Geddes before he fell to another boundary catch off Currie (two for 38), while Leus du Plooy and Jack Davies both departed cheaply as Sussex turned the screw. However, a flurry of boundaries from Hollman (20 from nine) lifted the tempo and Higgins took up the baton, hammering Mills for two enormous sixes and two fours in the penultimate over to keep Middlesex's faint hopes alive. But Ollie Robinson (three for 27) kept his cool to send down a near-flawless final over, having Geddes caught in the deep and then yorking Higgins to seal Sussex's victory.

T20 Blast begins with wins for Lancs and Sussex

This year's T20 Blast got under way with opening night victories for troubled Lancashire Lightning and last season's semi-finalists Sussex Sharks. A day after the departure of head coach Dale Benkenstein after a bad start to the season, Lancashire secured a tense seven-run victory over Worcestershire Rapids at Emirates Old Keaton Jennings led from the front in their North Group encounter as his side posted 176-8 with no Worcestershire batter going past 39 as they only made 169-7. In the South Group, Sussex began with a 16-run win at Lord's over Middlesex aided by a fine 77 not out from James Coles in their 51 from Ben Geddes and some lusty hitting from Ryan Higgins, the home side never looked in contention as they ended on 186-7. Morale booster for Lancs It has been a dreadful start to the season in the County Championship for Lancashire, who named former T20-winning captain Steven Croft as interim head coach, with no wins from their seven had already resigned as red-ball captain and the club apologised to its members before Benkenstein's in charge for the T20 Blast, Jennings brought up his 50 off 30 balls and put on 79 for the first wicket with Luke a brilliant catch in the deep from Ethan Brookes removed Jennings and halted Lancashire's progress, and the hosts lost five wickets for 22 runs to keep the target to under nine runs an Kashif Ali smashed 39 off 21 balls, the Rapids were well over the required rate and on course for an away the loss of captain Brett D'Oliveira (30) and Adam Hose (13) to reduce Worcestershire to 93-4 after 10.1 overs changed the complexion of the there, Lancashire turned the screw and with the visitors needing 15 runs off the last over, Tom Aspinwall conceded just seven to deliver a morale-boosting first win of the season in any competition. Sharks start strongly Middlesex have been perennial strugglers in the South Group, unable to reach the quarter-finals for six years and without a Finals Day appearance since they won the competition in winning the toss, they chipped away at Sussex's top order, helped by Tom Helm running out Daniel Hughes at the non-striker's end when the Australian was well set on Coles' best T20 score from 44 balls held the innings together as he put on an unbroken 88 with Tom Clark (26 not out) to take the score past Zealand star Kane Williamson, on his Middlesex debut, was spectacularly caught for 14 at deep point by a diving Harrison Ward, who almost lost his trousers in the process. However, they were soon behind the required rate and at 136-5 early in the 17th over, the game looked hit 44 off just 16 balls to give them a glimmer of hope until he was bowled by Ollie Robinson in the last over as the England bowler finished with an impressive 3-27.
