Wildfires force evacuation of visitors and staff at 2 national parks in US West
Gunnison National Park, about 260 miles (418 kilometers) southwest of Denver, closed Thursday morning after lighting sparked blazes on both the North Rim and South Rim of the Black Canyon, the park said. The wildfire has burned 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers), with no containment of the perimeter.
The conditions there have been ripe for wildfire with hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds and dry vegetation, the park said, adding that weather will remain a concern Friday.
The Grand Canyon's North Rim in Arizona also closed Thursday because of a wildfire on adjacent Bureau of Land Management land near Jacob Lake. The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said it helped evacuate people from an area north of Jacob Lake and campers in the Kaibab National Forest nearby.
The fire began Wednesday evening after a thunderstorm moved through the area, fire officials said. It has burned about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers) with zero containment.

At 1:14 a.m. on July 4, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Kerr County, sending alerts to broadcast outlets, weather radios and cell phones. The warning was escalated to a flash flood emergency just under three hours later at 4:03 a.m. This apparent shift in narrative by Carr comes after some criticized Eastland for waiting to evacuate campers. The Washington Post reported on Monday, citing Carr, that the camp owner waited until 2:30 a.m. to begin evacuating campers, more than an hour after the initial alert went out. This prompted criticism over the camp's evacuation procedures. However, Carr pushed back on those raising concerns. Carr blamed communication failures, saying that cell phone service at Camp Mystic is spotty even in clear weather. "Communication was a huge deficiency," Carr told the Associated Press. "This community was hamstrung, nobody could communicate. The first responder, the first rescue personnel that showed up was a game warden." Carr told the Associated Press that Eastland and others began evacuating girls from the cabins closest to the overflowing river and moved them to the camp's recreation hall. The flooding at Camp Mystic killed 27 campers and counselors. At least 132 people died in the central Texas flooding and dozens remain missing in the Kerrville area.

Three other people were separately found dead Thursday in a submerged car, a stream, and a flooded basement in southern regions. Ministry officials said they were still investigating whether those deaths were directly caused by heavy rain. The heavy rain has forced the evacuation of 1,382 people from their homes, the ministry said in a statement, adding 46 flights have been cancelled. Parts of southern South Chungcheong province have received up to 420 millimeters (16.5 inches) of rain since Wednesday, according to the ministry.

Viewers recommend wearing layers as it gets cool once the sun sets, and bringing weather gear like a poncho in case it rains, as umbrellas are not allowed in the venue. Concertgoers should also prepare for the chance of hail. Viewers recommend bringing some kind of coverage like a blanket or a tarp; however, according to the Red Rocks website, items like large blankets and tarps are prohibited and will not be allowed past security. A spokesperson for Denver Arts and Venues explained that this is a common rule at many outdoor venues because fans use them to take up more space than is practical. Hail coming down at Red Rocks resulted in dozens of injuries at a concert a couple of years ago. Attendees described hail coming 'out of nowhere,' sending fans running for shelter. Once the storm passed, an estimated 80 to 90 people were reportedly hurt, with seven hospitalized. Injuries included cuts and broken bones. The venue said it displayed warnings on the screens; however, attendees remained in the venue. Fans are encouraged to know where the closest exit or shelter is, stay updated on the Denver weather forecast and pay attention to warnings. The Red Rocks website also recommends preparing for adverse weather conditions, including full exposure to the sun, strong wind, severe rain or snow. Tuesday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day as gusty winds and hail are possible along the Front Range and Eastern Plains. Pinpoint Weather Chief Meteorologist Dave Fraser said storms should be east of Interstate 25 by 5 or 6 p.m. and will move out to the plains by 7 p.m., so the threat for storms at Red Rocks and during the Rockies game is expected to be gone, other than a trailing showers early in the evening.
