Perlis local council assistant architectural officer released on MACC bail
Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani stated that although the 37-year-old woman has been released, investigations into the case are ongoing.
The case was believed to involve approximately RM70,000 and allegedly implicated her alongside a retired enforcement assistant from the same council.
"The retired officer, who was remanded with the woman on July 15, was released on July 17," he said in a brief message to Bernama via WhatsApp on Monday.
On July 15, the media reported that the woman and the 61-year-old man were suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes ranging from RM300 to RM9,000 from applicants in exchange for facilitating house renovation permit approvals across Perlis between 2022 and 2024.
The duo allegedly received the bribes through bank transfers made to the male suspect's account, which was later believed to have been shared with the female suspect.
Mohd Nor Adha said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – Bernama

Op Metal: MACC records statements from 32 people
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded statements from 32 people in connection with its investigation under Op Metal, which involves a syndicate linked to the smuggling of scrap metal and e-waste across five states. According to a source, investigations are ongoing to identify elements of corruption under Sections 16 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009. "The MACC has recorded a statement from a man with the title Datuk Seri, who is believed to be linked to the smuggling syndicate. "So far, statements from 32 people have been recorded to assist in the investigation. "However, no arrests have been made at this time," the source said today, adding that the total value of seized and frozen assets currently exceeds RM332 million. It was previously reported that scrap metal was being smuggled out of the country for export by falsely declaring it as machinery or other types of metal not subject to the 15 per cent export tax imposed by the government. The 'Datuk Seri' is believed to be among those involved in the illegal export of scrap metal to evade the tax. The syndicate was uncovered after the MACC launched a series of raids across five states, exposing an estimated RM950 million in lost tax revenue over the past six years. The commission's Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin previously confirmed that the total value of seized assets and frozen accounts related to the case had reached RM332 million. This includes the freezing of 324 bank accounts, comprising 142 company accounts and 182 individual accounts, with a combined value of nearly RM150 million. In addition, assets worth RM183 million were also seized. The MACC, through Op Metal, which began on July 14, uncovered that the smuggling of metal scrap had caused more than RM950 million in revenue losses to the country over the past six years, an average of RM160 million annually.

Recent spike in crime caused by thieving drug addicts, says Kedah top cop
ALOR SETAR: Theft by drug addicts has become the leading cause of rising index crime rates in Kedah, says police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah. He noted that from Jan 1 to Sunday (July 27), Kedah recorded 2,852 index crime cases, with 47 percent involving theft linked to drug addicts. "Kedah police will maintain the focus outlined by former police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh, which is to eradicate drug-related crime. "We believe that if drug issues can be tackled and eliminated as much as possible, the overall index crime rate in Kedah can be brought down," he said. Adzli was responding to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's recent comments in conjunction with the 2025 National Anti-Drug Day celebration held in Jitra last Friday, urging the Kedah government to step up efforts to remove the state from the top four nationwide for drug addiction rates. On a separate note, he said Kedah police are stepping up border security measures despite the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia conflict occurring far from the state's northern border. "Precautionary steps are being taken by strengthening security at Malaysia's border checkpoints," he said, adding that despite growing support from agencies such as the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, constant vigilance remains essential. "We must not let our guard down. We are committed to ensuring the country's borders remain secure," he said. Earlier, Adzli attended the rank insignia presentation ceremony for the Kedah police chief and deputy police chief, along with the handover ceremony for the deputy chief post, witnessed by Special Branch director CP Datuk Ibrahim Darus at the police contingent headquarters. Adzli, who was the acting police chief, was officially appointed to the role and promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP). Meanwhile, Perlis deputy police chief SAC Baderulhisham Baharudin was appointed as the new Kedah deputy police chief and promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). - Bernama

Three local authority staff held over alleged RM25,000 graft in Terengganu
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested three local authority staff in Terengganu for allegedly accepting bribes amounting to RM25,000 in exchange for facilitating building plan approvals. The suspects, comprising two men and a woman in their 40s and 50s, were detained at 2.30pm yesterday when they turned up at the Terengganu MACC office to have their statements recorded. Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan granted a six-day remand order after the MACC filed an application at the Kuala Terengganu magistrate's court this morning. A source said the trio are believed to have committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. "They are suspected of receiving various sums totalling RM25,000, channelled into their personal bank accounts via fund transfers from a private company," the source said. The arrests were made following the detention of a government agency director in January over a separate RM900,000 graft case. Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. He said more arrests may follow as investigations progress.
