Eagles running back Saquon Barkley named cover star for Madden NFL 26

NBC News02-06-2025
Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley was announced Monday as EA Sports' cover athlete for Madden NFL 26.
Barkley's sensational backward hurdle over a defender from Week 9 of last year's Super Bowl-winning season is depicted on the standard cover. The deluxe edition features a tight shot of Barkley in his game-day gear.
Barkley last season set an NFL single-season rushing record, postseason included, topping the mark of 2,476 yards set by Terrell Davis. He ended perhaps the greatest debut season of any free agent in Philadelphia sports history with 2,504 yards rushing and 18 rushing touchdowns.
'Starring on the cover of Madden NFL 26 and being named to the Madden NFL '99 Club' are both dreams come true,' Barkley said in an EA Sports news release. 'I'm grateful to my teammates, coaches, and Eagles fans for their support, and I can't wait to hit the field again to give Madden players more highlight-reel moments in Madden NFL 26.'

Chiefs bring in ex-crime boss to inspire Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Co during NFL training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs were treated to a motivational talk from a reformed crime boss, who then sat alongside Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes for a watch party of Happy Gilmore 2. Head coach Andy Reid invited Damon West - a former college quarterback who became a meth addict and was later sentenced to life in prison - to speak to his players as they prepare for the new NFL season. West served more than seven years in prison for his role as the mastermind of a burglary ring, after - in his own words - the lives of 'so many innocent people' were 'forever... changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit.' He is on parole in Texas until 2073 but West is now a best-selling author who preaches the 'coffee bean message', teaching people 'how to transform their environment, overcome challenges, and create positive change.' West has worked with teams including the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Timberwolves - as well as the US Army - and this week West spoke to the Chiefs. 'Thank you, Coach Reid, for the invitation to share the coffee bean message with the Kansas City Chiefs,' the author wrote on social media, alongside a picture of him standing arm in arm with Mahomes, Reid and Kelce. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Damon West (@damonwest7) As well as speaking to the players, West sat in on team meetings and a showing of Happy Gilmore 2, which features a cameo from Kelce. 'You blew my mind after the presentation by allowing me to sit in (next to you) on the offensive install meeting,' West continued. 'However, watching Happy Gilmore 2 with Pat, Travis, and the whole team is something I'll never forget.' Reid is known for running one of the most brutal training camps in the NFL. Under their legendary coach, the Chiefs are looking to bounce back from last year's Super Bowl heartbreak. Mahomes, Kelce and Co were eyeing an historic three-peat but Kansas City was humiliated by the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. Kelce teased possible retirement from the NFL following that loss. But the tight end decided to play on for a 13th season. The Chiefs are spending training camp at Missouri Western State University in St Joseph - around an hour north Arrowhead Stadium.

McVay: Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) will not practice next week

July 27 - The Los Angeles Rams will hold quarterback Matthew Stafford out of practice next week because of back soreness, head coach Sean McVay said on Saturday. McVay said he had "probably spoke a little bit too soon" last Tuesday when he anticipated Stafford will be practicing but maintained that there was no setback and the 37-year-old QB should be ready for the season opener on Sept. 7 at home against the Houston Texans. "He's doing really well. We've got a good plan in place," McVay said after Saturday's practice. "We are going to still take some more time with him, though. Nothing that's changed in terms of a setback. I probably spoke a little bit too soon, but the ultimate goal is Houston and being mindful of that. So we'll take it a week at a time with him. So I did want to be able to let you guys know about that." The coach said that after talking with the team's medical staff, it was "the smart thing to do." "I don't have any reason to be concerned based on the information that's been given," McVay said. "I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew, and I think it's best for him, best for our football team and that's kind of the plan that we'll have moving forward." Stafford has been in attendance for the first week of training camp but mostly away from the field and working with the training staff. He completed 340 of 517 passes (65.8 percent) for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions in starting 16 regular-season games in 2024. He also was 45 of 71 for 533 yards, four TDs and no interceptions in two playoff games last season. For his career, Stafford has completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 59,809 yards, 377 TDs and 188 picks in 222 regular-season games (all starts) with the Detroit Lions (2009-2020) and Rams (2021-present). He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2023, and won the Super Bowl with the Rams in the 2021 season. The Lions selected him with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia. McVay also said on Saturday that linebacker Chris Paul Jr. was held out of practice because of a calf injury, and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was also sidelined by a calf injury and his status is "day-to-day." --Field Level Media

Phil Collins' hospital dash and hospice rumours - what we know about his health

Phil Collins' hospital dash has sparked a flurry of rumours about the musician's health, with fans left fearing the worst, but what do we really know about his health? Speculation that Phil Collins was in hospice care has been dispelled following a hospital visit for the renowned drummer who has not been the only music legend of his generation to be struck down by illness. ‌ A spokesperson for the Genesis legend clarified that Collins is actually in hospital undergoing knee surgery, and is not on his deathbed. ‌ The rampant rumour that Collins was in hospice care sent shockwaves through his fanbase just days ago, causing distress among admirers already mourning the loss of other cherished stars like Ozzy Osbourne earlier this week. ‌ Earlier in the year, Collins did acknowledge his declining health. In a conversation with MOJO, he expressed a waning interest in making new music due to his "very sick." condition. He remarked, "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I've been sick. I mean very sick.", reports the Mirror US. ‌ "It's still kind of sinking in a bit," admitted the Grammy-winning artist. "I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock." Collins, who began drumming at the tender age of 5, noted that his lifelong dedication has "taken its toll on my hands, legs. "If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything," he stated. ‌ "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I'll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I've used up my air miles." The singer performed his last concert with Genesis in 2022 as his mobility issues worsened progressively after a spinal injury in 2007 resulted in severe nerve damage. ‌ He took to the stage with Genesis bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks at London's 02 Arena, with his son, Nic, on the drums. The Against All Odds singer managed to complete the show while seated comfortably in a chair, joking that he might have to 'find a real job' due to his ongoing health struggles. Although he didn't elaborate on his current health status during the farewell performance, Collins has faced several health challenges over the years. ‌ In the 2024 documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, he spoke about his deteriorating physical health. The star is renowned for his exceptional drumming skills and powerful vocals as part of the British rock band. He also holds a special place in the hearts of younger fans for his work on the "Tarzan" film, particularly his Oscar-winning song You'll Be In My Heart. In 2017, Collins was diagnosed with drop-foot, a condition that resulted in a loss of sensation in one of his feet. At the time, he revealed that the condition was a "result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk." In his documentary, Nic disclosed that his father had major neck surgery in 2015, and has been using a cane to assist with walking ever since.
