Sarawak GOF seizes RM1.16 mln in smuggled goods
The operations, codenamed Op Taring Awas and Op Batas, targeted illegal smuggling activities in multiple locations.
According to SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang, GOF commander, a July 2 operation in Bau led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man and the confiscation of 9,000 kg of frozen food valued at RM522,000, along with a lorry.
On the same day, another arrest was made in Bau involving a 52-year-old man, with 6,500 kg of frozen food worth RM367,000 and a lorry seized,' he stated.
Further operations yielded additional results.
On June 30, a 35-year-old man was detained in Serian, where 600 litres of diesel, three drums, and a Toyota Hilux were seized, amounting to RM136,728.
Meanwhile, a patrol in Tebedu last Saturday uncovered 145 cartons of smuggled cigarettes with unpaid taxes estimated at RM78,300.
In a separate incident in Tebedu, a 39-year-old man was arrested, and authorities confiscated 576 kg of sugar and a van, with a combined value of RM62,141.60. – Bernama

Preacher under fire for allegedly defrauding dozens

ARAVINTHAN A self-proclaimed preacher is under investigation for allegedly defrauding dozens of victims through business dealings, Umrah travel packages and religious school funding, Harian Metro reported. The 39-year-old preacher, who is also embroiled in a sex video scandal allegedly featuring his four wives, is now accused of cheating individuals and companies out of more than RM500,000. One victim, Diyana, 40, claimed her company loaned RM60,000 to support a religious school run by the preacher and paid RM5,000 monthly for its electricity over two years. 'The truth started to emerge when he asked us to supply Umrah bags worth RM40,000. He promised to pay later but never did. After several months, he failed to settle the debt and could not be contacted. 'In April 2023, my husband and a friend confronted him, but instead of resolving the matter, he shouted at them.' Another victim, a 52-year-old civil servant, said he lost over RM9,000 after paying for a bogus Umrah package. 'Close to the departure date, I was told there were various issues. I grew suspicious and requested a cancellation and a refund,' he said. Despite providing a partial reimbursement of RM6,900, the remaining balance remains unpaid so far. Morbid discovery: Birds were among the animals found dead on Penang Hill. — Courtesy of Penang Hill Corporation Decomposed animals are believed to have been poisoned GEORGE TOWN: The carcasses of eight dogs, three cats and five birds were found along the Penang Hill jeep track in a decayed condition and emitted a strong stench, said Penang Hill Corporation general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng. Some appeared to have defecated, a sign of possible poisoning. 'We believe the animals were poisoned through food traps placed along the jeep track,' he said, adding that the Penang Veterinary Services Department is investigating the matter. On Sunday, The Star reported that several animals including dogs and cats were found dead – believed to be poisoned on Penang Hill. Penang Veterinary Services Department director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the officers would try to get samples of food eaten by the animals and check CCTV cameras in the area. She said the case is being probed under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, adding that those found guilty can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed up to three years, or fined and jailed. Meanwhile, Penang Crime Consciousness and Public Safety Society chairman Datuk Mohamad Anil Shah Abdullah described the act of killing animals as cruel and inhumane. 'Regardless of whether the animals were strays or owned pets, the law protects all animals in Malaysia. 'If the public is unhappy with the presence or movement of animals, especially strays, they should report the matter to the Veterinary Services Department or the local council, which are authorised to take appropriate and humane action,' he said. He said that in relation to the Penang Hill case, it appeared the animals might have been poisoned. Malaysia, he added, has legal provisions to protect animals, including the Animals Act 1953, the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and Section 428 of the Penal Code. He said if action is needed, it must be taken by the proper authorities through legal and humane means. He emphasised that even pet owners aren't allowed to simply dispose of or kill their animals, adding that neglect or abandonment can pose public health risks, including disease spread and environmental hazards if carcasses are not properly managed. He added that owners must take full responsibility for their animals and ensure they are cared for, or handed over to the proper authorities if they can no longer manage them. 'Taking matters into one's own hands through cruelty is both morally wrong and punishable by law,' he said.

Vehicle dumping: Penampang folks face RM20,000 fine

PENAMPANG drivers could find themselves RM20,000 poorer for leaving their unwanted vehicles in the common areas around the district. A Municipal Council spokeswoman said this was the maximum fine which could be imposed in court, under the Uniform (Anti-Litter) By-Laws 2010. 'Alternatively, the offenders might have to spend up a year behind bars,' she said. 'In the worst case scenario, they could be slapped with both a fine and jail-term.' She said, since January, 191 individuals had been duly notified to transport their automobiles back to their respective properties. About 150 notices were affixed to vehicles around commercial centres and shops, according to her, while another 41 were left behind on automobiles which had encroached on housing roads. She said officers with the agency's Traffic Control Unit had made 168 separate checks of commercial and residential properties around Penampang between January and July, during which time these notices were issued. Among the former properties were the Koidupan Light Industrial area, Grand Industrial area, Fu Guan Industrial area, HSK Industrial area, Cyber Square, Country Heights shops, Regency Park Shops, Beverly Hills Plaza and Wong Kwok Commercial Centre. Where the housing areas were concerned, inspections were made of Taman Sindo, Taman Kibabaig, Taman Prima Sumundu, Taman Perdana Bundusan, Taman Kasigui, Taman Nosoob Jaya, Taman Peluduk, Taman Olivia, Taman Sei Juta, Taman Friendly, Taman OKK Lojungah, Taman Suria Apartment, Park Residence Sugud, Corinthian Garden, WB Villa and PPR ['Projek Perumahan Rakyat (The People's Housing Project)'] Kibabaig. The spokeswoman said the most notices were issued at the HSK Industrial area (36) and Taman Suria Apartments (28). 'Our records show that 62 motorists complied with our instructions over the last seven months.' She said those who had not removed their vehicles risked being compounded up to RM500, under the Uniform (Anti-Litter) By-laws. 'In the worst case scenario, we could begin legal proceedings against them. The spokeswoman said the agency frowned on illegal garbage dumps involving unwanted automobiles springing up around the district. 'Not only are these vehicles an eye sore but, more importantly, they could also become a potential breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.' To show that it was getting serious on the act of car-dumping, the Council began impounding vehicles last week. 'We carried out an operation at the HSK Industrial area on Friday. 'Nine of our Enforcement and three Landscaping personnel worked together with a tow-truck operator to remove five vehicles from the common areas here. 'These vehicles were impounded in the Council's new depot in the Pavilion area.' She said the owners would have to settle a compound, as well as the towing and impound charges, before their automobiles could be relinquished to them. 'They will have 30 days to do this. Any vehicles which remain after this will be disposed off.' When asked how the agency got rid of these automobiles, the spokeswoman declined to comment. She said the agency had enlisted the assistance of the Police Department to determine if the dumped automobiles had been used in any criminal activities. The Council's Enforcement officers would continue to be on the lookout for any vehicles which had been abandoned, or haphazardly parked, in public areas around Penampang, according to her. 'We are in discussions with the upper administration of the Road Transport Department about gaining direct access to the its database.
