Selangor govt orders removal of advertisements promoting vape products
The directive follows a state coordination meeting chaired by Selangor public health and environment committee chairman, Jamaliah Jamaluddin. She said the state was considering a complete ban on vape products across Selangor.
'The meeting has decided that all local councils in Selangor take immediate action by confiscating and seizing advertisements promoting vape products across all advertising media, whether physical or digital.
This action is in line with the provisions of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2023 (Act 852), which clearly prohibits all forms of advertising, promotion, and sponsorship related to electronic smoking products,' she said in a statement.
The meeting addressed several issues related to the use and sale of vape products, including enforcement challenges, licensing, legal aspects, and monitoring.
The issue of online sales was also discussed, as it is difficult to regulate and often serves as a primary channel for teenagers to access these products, she said.
The use of vape products among teenagers has shown a significant increase, Jamaliah said, citing the 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey, which estimated that nearly 14.9% of male teenagers aged 13 to 17 in Malaysia use vape products.
'This statistic is deeply concerning and highlights the urgent need for proactive measures at the state level,' she added.
Jamaliah also said that the state government, through the Selangor state standing committee on public health, plans to have a follow-up meeting in the near future to discuss suitable policy options before the final proposal is presented to the Selangor State Executive Council (MMKN) for a decision.
'The State Government also strongly encourages the active involvement of parents, educational institutions, civil society, and relevant agencies at both State and Federal levels to ensure that the measures taken are truly effective and sustainable,' she concluded.
Terengganu and Perlis have reportedly announced a ban on vape sales from August 1 while
Kedah will start phasing out renewal of vape sales licenses in the state.
Meanwhile, the Penang state government has discussed a proposal to ban the sale of vapes at all business premises on April 29.

S'gor eyes plastics ban before 2030

He said there was a possibility for the ban to take place earlier than the current target of 2030, subject to feasibility. While still committed to phasing out single-use plastics at the current target of 2030, Amirudin said the time frame gave businesses and the public time to adjust to the idea of having no single-use plastics. 'We need to study the relevant laws as there are challenges in implementation and enforcement,' he said at the launch of the Plastic-Free Campaign Series 2 held at Laman Seni Safari 2 in Klang. Amirudin added that public awareness and adaptation are crucial for the success of the ban. He acknowledged that low-cost plastic products remained widely available and said Selangor would implement reduction initiatives in phases. 'Our campaigns are commitments to initiatives like the 'Roadmap to Single Use Plastic 2030'. 'Collaborations are needed with major retailers to signify a stronger commitment to reducing plastic waste,' he said, adding that more time was needed to cultivate new consumer behaviours. 'Our approach is more than a policy. It is about creating a culture of sustainability.' Amirudin said all 12 local councils in Selangor have been tasked with facilitating the transition. 'Outlets like supermarkets, convenience stores, hypermarkets and fast food outlets must also comply,' he said. Amiruding also said that by choosing reusable cloth bags and rejecting single-use plastics, everyone could contribute to a cleaner and greener future. 'In events like today's, reusable bags and tiffin carriers were given out as a way of affecting long-term behavioural change.' On a separate matter, Amirudin said a detailed technical briefing regarding the April 1 gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights would be held following today's State Legislative Assembly sitting. 'We want everyone to understand the real aspects and not perceive the issue wrongly. 'What is important is that we want to move forward. 'On legal proceedings, we leave the matter to those affected,' he said. The state assembly session will run from today to July 18 at Selangor State Assembly Building in Shah Alam.

Selangor to enforce ‘No Plastic Bag Day' across all 12 local councils by early 2026
KLANG, July 6 — The Selangor government is in the final phase of amending the relevant by-laws to standardise the implementation of the No Plastic Bag Day initiative across all 12 local authorities (PBTs) in the state. State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the move was part of a three-pronged approach to systematically and comprehensively address the plastic pollution in the state. 'The amendment process is expected to be completed this year, with wider enforcement of the No Plastic Bag Day to begin early next year,' she said in her speech during the Plastic Free Campaign Series 2 2025, officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari here today. Jamaliah said the state government would forge strategic partnerships with various parties to ensure the success of the plastic-free campaign. 'For example, present with us today are various parties who play an important role in tackling plastic pollution through awareness initiatives, recycling innovations, upcycling efforts and the provision of environmentally friendly alternatives, thereby supporting a sustainable and plastic-free lifestyle,' she said. Meanwhile, Jamaliah said the state government would continue to strengthen efforts to promote a plastic-free and environmentally friendly lifestyle through initiatives at the PBT level, as well as collaborations with schools and educational institutions in Selangor. 'Recognising that many parties in the state are actively working to reduce plastic use, the portal, which is currently being updated, will serve as a platform to bring together strategic partners and coordinate participation in the plastic-free campaign. 'Through this platform, organisers such as PBTs and schools can collaborate with non-governmental organisations, companies, social entrepreneurs and local communities, thereby encouraging the sharing of information, ideas and resources towards making a plastic-free lifestyle a daily practice among the people of Selangor,' she said. On the campaign, Jamaliah said the programme, which was first held in Sepang in May, was carried out without the use of plastic, relying instead on environmentally friendly and reusable materials to raise participants' awareness of the importance of caring for the environment. 'We will move to the next location, Sabak Bernam, on August 23 with the same spirit, a determination to break free from plastic dependence, and a commitment to a cleaner environment and to fostering a plastic-free lifestyle,' she said. — Bernama
