PM Sharif orders early Hajj planning, calls for private scheme reform
Pakistan received a quota of 179,210 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2025, which was evenly divided between the government and private Hajj operators.
While the government filled its full allocation of over 88,000 pilgrims, a major portion of the private quota remained unutilized due to delays by companies in meeting payment and registration deadlines.
Private operators, however, blamed the situation on technical glitches such as payment issues and communication breakdowns.
'Preparations for next year's Hajj operation must begin immediately,' the prime minister said, according to a statement released by his office.
'The operational plan should be developed in accordance with the Hajj policy issued by Saudi Arabia,' he continued. 'No negligence in serving pilgrims next year will be tolerated.'
Sharif also emphasized the need to 'regularize' the private Hajj scheme.
Previously, Pakistan's religious affairs minister, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, had confirmed that over 67,000 private-sector slots went unused, despite a last-minute effort to reclaim some of the allocation.
The shortfall prompted criticism and concerns over regulation and the capacity of private Hajj companies.
The prime minister has also asked the religious affairs ministry to submit a detailed Hajj action plan with clear deadlines and start preparing for next year's Islamic pilgrimage.

An order for 32 Boeing 787 Dreamliners by British Airways parent IAG SA was the centerpiece of a new US-UK trade deal. Jet expansion AirAsia signed a memorandum of understanding covering 50 A321XLR jets with options for 20 more, according to a company statement on Friday. Under the provisional agreement, Airbus's longest-range narrowbody jet will begin arriving by 2028, Tony Fernandes, chief executive officer of AirAsia parent Capital A Bhd., told reporters. 'A narrowbody obviously gives us a lot less risk in terms of starting new routes,' he said on a video call. 'This order allows us to have a narrowbody fleet that can cover the world.' AirAsia, one of Southeast Asia's largest budget carriers, plans to use the XLRs to open up routes in China, India and other parts of the Asia-Pacific that would be uneconomical for larger planes requiring more fuel, Fernandes said. AirAsia plans to open a Gulf hub this year and extend its flight network to some European destinations. Capital A is also seeking a secondary listing in Hong Kong. The airline is looking to order up to 150 more jets to complete its 15-year strategy, Fernandes said. He said the company is in talks with Airbus over the fate of an earlier order for A330 widebodies, an aircraft category he'd prefer to exit. Malaysia Airlines, the country's national carrier, doubled its commitment of A330neos to renew its aging fleet and fuel its long-haul expansion. Once all delivered, that would take its fleet to 40 of the re-engined fuel-efficient widebody. Deliveries for the additional order are planned between 2029 and 2031. 'This additional order reinforces our long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, delivers consistent value to our passengers, and strengthens our competitiveness in key markets,' the airline's Group Managing Director Izham Ismail said in a statement on Saturday. Anwar was in France for his inaugural visit as prime minister at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. France is one of Malaysia's top five trading partners within the European Union and a key source of foreign direct investment in high-technology and strategic sectors, according to Malaysia's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Pakistan, UAE agree to boost cooperation in higher education, human resources
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in higher education and human resource development, the Pakistani embassy said on Saturday. The statement came after a meeting between Pakistan's Ambassador Faisal Niaz Tirmizi and Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmanan Al-Awar, the UAE minister of human resources, higher education and scientific research. The UAE is home to more than 1.5 million Pakistani expatriates who live and work in the Gulf country and send back more than $5 billion in remittances to the South Asian country annually. During the meeting, Ambassador Tirmizi highlighted the contributions of the Pakistani community to the UAE's development and appreciated the Gulf country for fostering an inclusive and enabling environment for expatriates. 'Both sides reviewed ongoing collaboration and explored avenues to further enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of higher education and human resource development,' the Pakistani embassy said. 'The discussions reflected a shared resolve to work closely on initiatives that benefit students, academic institutions, and professionals from both countries.' Ambassador Tirmizi reiterated Pakistan's commitment to strengthening institutional linkages and advancing cooperation in skill development and workforce preparedness. Saudi Arabia expands aid project for flood-affected families in Pakistan
Riyadh: Saudi aid agency KSrelief has launched the third phase of its food security support project in Pakistan, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The launch ceremony was held at the Saudi Embassy in Islamabad, attended by Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, Pakistan's Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, and other officials. Al-Malki said the project 'reflects the directives of the Saudi leadership and its continued support for the people of Pakistan.' He added that it is part of a series of KSrelief initiatives intended to help vulnerable families, particularly those affected by floods across the country. The project will distribute more than 30,000 food baskets in various regions of Pakistan. Each basket contains essential food items sufficient for a family for one month, the SPA reported. The project will assist a total of 210,000 people, Al-Malki added. Hussain expressed the gratitude of the Pakistani government and people for Saudi Arabia's ongoing humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, KSrelief concluded the Saudi Noor program to combat blindness and its causes in Settat, Morocco, on Saturday. During the week-long campaign, medical volunteers examined 2,525 patients, performed 276 surgeries, and distributed 957 pairs of glasses. In Yemen, a KSrelief team visited vocational training centers in Seiyun district, Hadramout governorate, to assess the Vocational Pathways project aimed at empowering young men and women. The team reviewed training programs in motorcycle electrical maintenance and sewing and tailoring, which are benefiting 40 participants from both the host community and displaced populations. The project is part of the Kingdom's humanitarian efforts to benefit Yemeni youth through vocational training and tools, contributing to sustainable development for the country. In Sudan, KSrelief distributed 500 food baskets to displaced families in several towns in Blue Nile State, benefiting 3,266 people. The agency also distributed 1,550 food baskets in El-Gadarif State, benefiting 10,230 individuals. -ENDS-
