Egypt, Somalia leaders discuss strategic partnership, counterterrorism in New Alamein
According to Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy, the meeting included a one-on-one session followed by expanded talks between the two countries' delegations. Discussions centred on reinforcing the strategic partnership and enhancing coordination on regional security challenges.
At a joint press conference following the talks, President Al-Sisi said the two leaders discussed political and security conditions in the Horn of Africa, as well as expanding cooperation across political, economic, security, and defence sectors. He noted that the talks built on the political declaration signed in January 2025, which aims to elevate Egyptian-Somali relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Al-Sisi announced that both sides had agreed to activate the military cooperation protocol signed in August 2024. The protocol includes efforts to strengthen Somali security personnel and state institutions to combat terrorism and restore state authority across Somalia. He also reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to the African Union's support mission in Somalia and called for predictable, sustainable international funding to ensure the mission's continued effectiveness.
Al-Sisi praised President Mohamud's efforts to promote national unity and fight extremist groups, reaffirming Egypt's full support for all initiatives aimed at fostering political consensus and achieving lasting peace and development in Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his visit sought to reinforce the historic ties between Egypt and Somalia. He expressed gratitude for Egypt's continued support, especially in healthcare, education, and institutional development. 'We are grateful for Egypt's role in providing healthcare services in Somalia—services that were previously unavailable,' he said.
President Mohamud also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Egypt across various sectors, with a particular focus on boosting private sector partnerships and exploring mutually beneficial investment opportunities.
He extended a formal invitation to President Al-Sisi to visit Somalia, saying: 'The Somali people are eager to welcome you warmly.'
The visit comes amid intensifying diplomatic engagement between the two countries, as the Horn of Africa continues to face persistent security and political challenges. Volatility in the Red Sea, a critical maritime corridor, has also raised concerns due to ongoing regional tensions and proxy conflicts.
The renewed Egyptian-Somali engagement is widely viewed as part of Cairo's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in East Africa by supporting regional stability, enhancing institutional resilience, and countering terrorism and economic fragility.

Israel bombs Huthis in Yemen after rebels attack commercial ship for first time in months
Israel has carried out its first strikes against Huthi targets in Yemen since the Israel-Iran ceasefire, attacking ports and a power plant around midnight local time Sunday night into Monday morning. The strikes come after at least three Huthi ballistic missiles were launched at Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), including one missile that was intercepted Saturday. The Iran-backed Huthis also claimed responsibility for an attack on the bulk carrier 'Magic Seas' in the Red Sea on Sunday, the first on commercial shipping in the region by the rebels this year. Israel struck the ports of Hodeida, Ras Isa, Salif and the Ras Kanatib power plant along the Red Sea. The IDF also hit the Galaxy Leader, a cargo ship seized by the Huthis in November 2023. 'Huthi forces installed a radar system on the ship and have been using it to track vessels in the international maritime arena to facilitate further terrorist activities,' the IDF said in a statement following the strikes. A short time before the wave of attacks, the IDF's Arabic language spokesman, Avichay Adraee, issued an evacuation warning for the ports and the power station. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the strikes were part of the newly named Operation 'Black Flag.' In a statement on social media, Katz said, 'The Huthis will continue to pay a heavy price for their actions' and promised more attacks would follow if the Huthis kept launching drones and ballistic missiles at Israel. The Huthi military confirmed the strikes but said, 'Yemeni air defenses effectively confronted the Israeli aggression,' using, 'a massive barrage of locally manufactured surface-to-air missiles,' in a short statement on early Monday morning. There are no immediate reports of casualties from the strikes. Huthi political bureau member Mohammed Al Farah said targeting Yemeni ports, power stations, and other 'civilian facilities is an attempt to harm civilians and has no connection to any military activity,' according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV. Since Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza started in October 2023, the country has come under fire from missiles and rockets from Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Huthis in Yemen, who claim to strike Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians. On Sunday, the Houthis attacked the 'Magic Seas' ship, claiming that the its owner had used Israeli ports. The rebels said they had struck the vessel with unmanned boats, missiles and drones, and it had now sunk. They have warned that they will target shipping that uses ports in Israel, which they describe as 'occupied Palestine.' The vessel's operator – Stem Shipping – told Reuters that the 'Magic Seas' had made a port call to Israel in the past, but the latest transit of the region appeared low-risk as it had nothing to do with Israel. The 'Magic Seas' crew of 19 left the boat on Sunday and were being taken by another ship to Djibouti. The United Arab Emirates foreign ministry said an Emirati operation rescued everyone aboard the ship, in close coordination with organizations like the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). A vessel responded to a distress call from the 'Magic Seas' after it came under attack and sustained 'damage' to its structure, causing its crew to abandon ship under 'difficult maritime conditions' the ministry said. In May, the Huthi group – which controls much of northern and central Yemen – agreed to halt attacks on US warships in the Red Sea after more than a month of airstrikes by US forces on its strongholds and missile infrastructure. But it did not pledge to end attacks on other shipping with alleged connections to Israel and has continued to fire ballistic missiles at Israel in support of the Palestinian population in Gaza. Egyptian Parliament Approves Sukari Gold Mine Agreement with StenaMin for 30-Year Term
Waleed Farouk During its plenary session on Monday, the Egyptian House of Representatives approved a draft law allowing the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to enter into a contract with the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) and StenaMin Central Mining Company for the exploitation of gold ore and associated minerals in the Sukari concession area, for a period of up to 30 years. MP Mohamed Mostafa El-Sallab, Chairman of the Industry Committee, presented the joint committee's report, noting that the agreement falls under Law No. 198 of 2014 on Mineral Resources and its amendments, and aims to strengthen Egypt's mining sector and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). According to the agreement, StenaMin, a company established under Egyptian law, will bear all investment and operational costs of the project, without any financial obligations or guarantees from the Egyptian state. These costs include infrastructure development, mining operations, and production activities. The company is also obligated to pay an annual rent of EGP 25,000 per square kilometer of the concession area, paid in advance. The first installment is due within 15 days from the date the license becomes effective. Additionally, StenaMin will pay a 5% royalty on the net proceeds from gold sales (tax-exempt) and 15% of net taxable income to the Mineral Resources Authority. The report emphasized that the company will be subject to all applicable Egyptian tax laws, including value-added tax (VAT) and customs duties, and must pay all dues on time. Any payment delays will incur an annual interest penalty of 5%. The agreement also includes provisions for conducting all financial transactions in foreign currency, giving priority to locally sourced goods and services when quality and price are equal to imported alternatives, and requires the company to carry out a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment. Furthermore, the company will own all gold and associated minerals upon extraction, and the Egyptian government commits not to nationalize or expropriate the company's assets except in accordance with the law.
