Jordan, Syria agree to launch cloud seeding project in Yarmouk Basin

AMMAN — The Jordanian-Syrian Joint Technical Committee held its second meeting on Monday in Damascus, co-chaired by Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority Hisham Hesa and Syrian Deputy Minister of Energy Osama Abu Zaid. Syrian Minister of Energy Mohammad Bashir welcomed the committee members, expressing appreciation for the continued cooperation between the two countries in the field of water resource management. During the meeting, both sides agreed to launch a cloud seeding project in the Yarmouk Basin and to activate technical coordination mechanisms to support the sustainable and equitable use of the basin's water resources. They also emphasised the importance of further developing the Yarmouk Basin to enhance its long-term capacity and strategic value, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The committee had previously convened its first meeting in July at the Al-Wehda Dam on the Jordanian-Syrian border. The meeting focused on ensuring fair water distribution in the Yarmouk Basin and strengthening cooperation on shared water resources. At the time, Assistant Secretary-General for Media Affairs at the Ministry of Water Omar Salameh said the two sides had reached several key understandings, including agreements on fair water allocation, expanding cloud seeding initiatives, implementing joint infrastructure projects, and enhancing remote monitoring and control of water sources and dams. The committee meetings were part of broader Jordanian-Syrian efforts to advance collaboration in the fields of water and energy, following high-level discussions held between the two countries in July.

Israeli settlers continue to obstruct Jordanian aid convoys bound for Gaza

AMMAN — Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani said Monday that Israeli settlers continue to obstruct humanitarian aid trucks sent from Jordan to the war-torn Gaza Strip. Momani said in a press statement that several aid convoys have been targeted, with the latest incident occurring on Sunday. 'Several Jordanian aid trucks were intercepted and prevented from continuing their journey to Gaza,' he said, adding that a number of trucks were forced to turn back. 'These are not isolated events. Settlers have repeatedly attacked Jordanian aid convoys, damaging vehicles and disrupting the delivery of humanitarian supplies [to Gaza],' Momani said. He added that settlers gathered on public roads, blocked the movement of the trucks, and disabled at least four vehicles by throwing sharp objects on the road, causing tire blowouts. Momani called on Israeli authorities to take 'serious and immediate action' to stop the assaults and 'acts of looting' targeting aid shipments. 'There have been cases of looting and a lack of protection for the convoys. This chaos is preventing the organised and timely delivery of essential relief materials to those who need them most.' The minister criticised the growing logistical and bureaucratic hurdles at Israeli checkpoints, including arbitrary inspection procedures, unnecessary delays, newly imposed customs fees, and restrictions on the number of trucks allowed to pass. 'Some trucks were even turned back under the pretext that working hours had ended.' He stressed that the repeated nature of these incidents requires decisive intervention by Israeli authorities to uphold international agreements and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid.

John Oliver: Gaza is being starved by Israel

ALBAWABA - In a new statement made during the "Last Week Tonight" show, host John Oliver criticized Israel's recent actions in Gaza while shedding light on the ongoing starvation of Palestinians in the Strip by referencing several human rights organizations. Oilver stated while referencing several human rights organizations, including the UN, Oxfam, WHO, and many more, that over a third of the population in Gaza is going "days without food." He added that even for individuals who are suspicious of these organizations, Israeli human rights groups and newspapers such as B'tselem and Haaretz have come to the same conclusion. John Oliver not mincing words: "Gaza is starving, is a sentence that's objectively true, but it's also slightly misleading because it's too passive. Gaza is being starved by Israel." — Blue Georgia (@BlueATLGeorgia) August 4, 2025 He then took jabs at several Israeli politicians, such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Minister of Defence Bezalel Smotrich. John Oliver concluded, "Gaza is starving, is a sentence that's objectively true, but it's also slightly misleading because it's too passive. Gaza is being starved by Israel." By the time of reporting, the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza has resulted in the killing of at least 60,300 Palestinians and the injuring of more than 147,600 Palestinians, according to the health ministry in the Strip. Among those killed or injured were starving Palestinians seeking aid. Additionally, over 175 Palestinians, including 93 children, have died from starvation as Israel and Israeli protestors continue to block aid trucks from entering.
