Ivan Cleary cops heat over Penrith trainer furore as Bulldogs player's act emerges
The fallout to the Panthers trainer debacle has continued with fans waiting to see how the NRL reacts on Monday to the incident. The Titans had just scored and Campbell was lining up his conversion with the ambition of pushing the score beyond a penalty goal or two-point drop goal. Although Panthers trainer Corey Bocking darted across the field and in his line of sight.
Much was made of the incident with Fox Sports commentator Andrew Voss calling out the trainer as boos rang around the stadium. "That is disgraceful, that is absolutely disgraceful," Andrew Voss said.
Campbell missed the conversion, before throwing his kicking tee in disgust. However, he soon chased down the kicking tee and appeared to apologise to the ball kid in a classy move.
The Titans ended up losing the game with Nathan Cleary icing a two-point field goal to take it to golden point. And Blaize Talagi scored in extra time to seal the victory for the Panthers and move them within a point of the Warriors in fourth.
However, coach Cleary has now come under scrutiny for his response to the debacle. "I didn't see it...he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We had a sub and I changed it at the last minute," Cleary said after the game.
"He was trying to communicate with the bench for a late change. It was an honest mistake. He apologised straight away. Gold Coast Titans fans may not feel like an apology is enough with the Panthers finding themselves in yet another trainer controversy this year.
And speaking on Monday morning, NRL commentator Voss has called out Cleary for his response to the situation. Voss feels Cleary and the Panthers were too quick to dismiss the incident with the fans rightfully upset.
"I didn't see it, that just infuriates me that first line. To say I didn't see it, of course you saw it. C'mon, we replayed it six times. The game was stopped. That just throws petrol on the fire," Voss added on SEN Radio about Cleary's comments. When asked if it could have been an accident from the trainer Voss said: "Yes, but I can't accept that."
Bailey Hayward called out for Tigers moment
Only a day after the Penrith trainer was slammed for distracting the kicker and the rules being dug up, Bulldogs sub Hayward could have also been at the centre of attention. Voss called out the Bulldogs star as Adam Doueihi was lining up a penalty kick.
The Tigers were awarded a penalty in front of goal after Stephen Crichton collected Taylan May high, but remained on the field, with the Wests Tigers star leaving for a category one HIA. And Doueihi lined-up the conversion to push the lead out against the Bulldogs.
Although cameras picked up Hayward quite animated as he waved his arms in front of the goal. This could have been deemed another offence and if Doueihi had missed the penalty, the referee would have been within his rights to award the Tigers kicker another opportunity. And Voss called out Hayward following the drama that had unfolded only 24 hours earlier in the Panthers and Titans game.
"Even Bailey Hayward yesterday, was waving his arms around in front of a Doueihi kick. And I thought, you goose. What are you doing?" Voss said following the Panthers debacle.
Andrew Voss calls for answers from NRL
Voss admitted the NRL doesn't have a clear rule on what to do if the trainer does impede a goal kick. But it doesn't excuse the Panthers from the incident.
"If a defending player waves their arms in front of a kicker and he misses, the referee is obliged to let the kicker have another shot. But no where does it cover a trainer doing that. An external party to the players. There is no rule. Liam Kennedy would have had to make up a rule in the spirit of the game on the spot," Voss added. "We can bulletproof ourselves for future...but first things first, what we do is what action?"

Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk will be the face of NHL 26
Matthew Tkachuk has been the face of the Florida Panthers for the past three years. He is becoming one of the faces of USA hockey, too, leading into the Winter Olympics in February. And now, he's the face of the NHL's annual video game. Tkachuk, the Panthers' star winger, will be the cover athlete for NHL 26, EA Sports unveiled on Monday. The full cover design for the game will be announced Wednesday on the EA Sports NHL YouTube channel. Tkachuk, who joined the Panthers via a blockbuster trade with the Calgary Flames ahead of the 2022-23 season, has helped turn the Panthers into a juggernaut. Florida has reached the Stanley Cup Final in all three of his seasons with the team and won it all each of the past two years. In that time, Tkachuk has logged 254 points (88 goals, 166 assists) in 211 regular-season games with the Panthers while adding another 69 points (25 goals, 44 assists) in 67 Stanley Cup playoffs games. He was tied for the team lead with 23 points during the team's run to a second consecutive Stanley Cup. Tkachuk also helped the United States win silver in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February and has already been named one of six players to be on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Tkachuk is the second Panthers player to grace the cover of the video game's main cover. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was on the cover of NHL 97. Meanwhile, Olli Jokinen was on the cover of the European version of NHL 2005. It's the second time in the past three years a South Florida athlete has been the main cover athlete for a league's video game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was on the cover of 2023 edition of MLB The Show when he was with the Miami Marlins.

Stokes: I'm looking forward to getting to Australia
For months, England captain Ben Stokes has avoided talking about the Ashes in Australia as much as possible. But after a Test match - and series - for the ages against India, even he is prepared to mention it and firmly believes his side are battle hardened after the draining series that finished in a chaotic defeat at The Oval on Monday. More than 7000 runs were scored in the five Tests, but just when England were in need of fewer than 50 runs for the final five wickets, they lost. The last time that happened to them in a fourth innings while chasing victory was in 1902, against Australia at Old Trafford Stokes was England's most effective bowler in the series but exhausted himself into a shoulder injury that forced him to miss The Oval. Stokes praised his seam attack - deprived of himself, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes, who came out to bat with a dislocated shoulder but did not have to face - for running India so close in the six-run defeat that squared a superb series. "When one of your bowlers goes down so early in the game, the role of the other seamers changes," Stokes said. A stunning end to the five-Test series as India clinch the thriller at The Oval 👏#WTC27 #ENGvIND 📝: — ICC (@ICC) August 4, 2025 "Even in the second innings, the heart and desire they showed was amazing. There were many what-ifs in the last five days, makes the game great, but all (coach) Brendon (McCullum) and I asked was to give it everything. (Josh) Tongue, (Gus) Atkinson and (Jamie) Overton showed it. "The way in which we've been able to perform throughout the series, I'm looking forward to getting to Australia and doing what we want to go out there and do." England and India both wasted earlier chances to win the fifth Test but after India took the final four wickets in a hectic 57 minutes of play on the final morning, Stokes accepted the conclusion was deserved. "The series as a whole has been pretty much toe-to-toe for 25 days. From a cricket fan's point of view, 2-2 is probably fair," he said. "Two very good teams who have thrown everything at each other and left everything out there. We obviously would have loved to get a series win but it wasn't meant to be. "We're bitterly disappointed we couldn't get over the line but it was another hard-fought game and both teams put so much energy and effort into the series, it's been an amazing one to be part of. "There's a little bit of frustration there as well but as a massive advocate of this format and for Test cricket as a whole, this has certainly been one of those series that could hopefully keep off the narrative around 'Test cricket is dying'." Stokes said he was looking forward to being well rested for the first Ashes test against Australia, in Perth, on November 21, but if he is fit, there are serious questions over who will join him in England's attack. Fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood have both missed more Tests than they have played in recent years and the chances of Woakes being fit to bowl in less than four months must be remote. England have not won a Test in Australia since 2011, something David Warner will doubtless be reminding them of during his stint playing for London Spirit in The Hundred over the next few weeks. Florida Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk named 'NHL 26' cover athlete
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will be on the cover of NHL 26, EA Sports announced Monday. A full reveal for the video game will premier Wednesday. "He's loud," EA Sports wrote on social media. "He's relentless. He's a problem. Now he's the face of the game." Tkachuk, 27, joined the Panthers through a 2022 trade from the Calgary Flames. The nine-year veteran made the Stanley Cup Final in each of his three seasons with the franchise, including their back-to-back title-winning campaigns in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Tkachuk tied Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart for the Panthers' team lead in postseason points, with 23 over 23 games. He scored eight goals and chipped in 15 assists during the Panthers' 2024-25 playoff run. NHL 26 is expected to be released in September. The NHL 26 preview will air Wednesday on YouTube.
