Niemann, Grace, Meronk tied for individual lead at LIV Golf UK
ROCESTER: Similar to last season, Joaquin Niemann entered this week's LIV Golf UK by JCB as the season-long points leader, with Jon Rahm in hot pursuit. The Torque GC captain is determined to write a different ending this time. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Niemann, a four-time winner this season, shot a bogey-free 65 on Friday at JCB Golf & Country Club to grab a share of the first-round lead with Cleeks GC's Adrian Meronk and Stinger GC's Branden Grace. The trio are one shot ahead of Majesticks' co-captain Lee Westwood, RangeGoats' captain Bubba Watson, and Niemann's Torque teammate Carlos Ortiz. The team leaderboard is also tightly bunched at the top with defending UK champions Legion XIII tied with Stinger and Torque at 11 under. Six other teams are within five shots of the lead. Rahm won the individual UK trophy for his first career LIV Golf victory a year ago, using it as a springboard to catch Niemann for the season-long Individual Championship in the regular-season finale. Niemann entered this week with a 15-point lead over Rahm and is now in a great position to build on his advantage, as Rahm shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 32nd. Crushers' captain Bryson DeChambeau, who is in third place in the standings, is tied for 11th after a 68. Based on projections after Friday's first round, Niemann would leave England with a 44-point lead, which would mean he would be guaranteed pole position in the standings going into the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, to determine the Individual Championship next month. Niemann, who birdied four of his first six holes, said: 'I'm in a really privileged situation to be on top of the rankings and being chased by Jon and Bryson. It just makes me a better athlete. I like that pressure.' Unlike Niemann, the other two players who share the lead are fighting different battles. Grace has spent most of the season in the drop zone (49th and below in points) and facing relegation while battling wrist problems, but the South African has found his form recently. He tied for fourth earlier this month in Andalucia, a result that moved him out of the drop zone, and he continued his fine play with a round that started hot (three birdies in his first four holes) and ended the same way. Meronk, meanwhile, returned to the kind of form on Friday that secured him the season-opening tournament in Riyadh. His 65 was his best score, relative to par, in his last 25 LIV Golf rounds. The Polish star, who finished with four birdies in his last five holes, said: 'Finally, I'm enjoying myself on the course and playing good golf again, which is quite exciting. 'It's great to be back in this position, and I'm really looking forward to this weekend and to three more tournaments this year.' Of the top eight players on the leaderboard, three are from England, led by the resurgent Westwood, the 52-year-old legend who tied an Open Championship record last week at Royal Portrush by shooting a back-nine 29. Legion XIII's Tyrrell Hatton and the Crushers' Paul Casey, the other two Englishmen on the front page of the leaderboard, are tied for seventh after shooting 67s. All six English players on the LIV Golf roster received huge support from a packed and enthusiastic gallery at JCB, which is hosting the tournament for the second successive year and will return as a host course next season. 'It feels like our home event, and it's always nice to perform in front of home fans,' said Westwood, who played with fellow Englishmen and Majesticks' teammates Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield on Friday. The crowd was especially vocal at the par-3 14th. 'It's a fun atmosphere,' said Hatton, who tied for second last year to his captain Rahm. 'There were a lot of people there, and the music was good too. I think most of us probably enjoyed a singalong down that hole.' TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores counting in every round in the team competition (click here for more on the new format). Here are the results and scores for each team after Friday's round one of LIV Golf UK by JCB. T1. LEGION XIII -11 (Hatton 67, Surratt 67, McKibbin 68, Rahm 71) T1. Michigan In Discussions To Kick Off 2026 Football Season In Germany
Michigan is having discussions about kicking off the 2026 football season against Western Michigan in Germany. The school announced Friday on social media that it is seeking to play at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on August 29, 2026. It would be the first game the Wolverines would play outside of North America. Athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement this would be a first-of-its-kind opportunity for the Wolverines and their fans. The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique, Manuel said. This would be a great opportunity to teach Go Blue to a new group of fans in Germany. Home to Eintracht Frankfurt of Bundesliga, the stadium features a retractable roof with a capacity of 55,000. Deutsche Bank Park has hosted five NFL games, including two regular-season games in 2023. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said they're always looking for unique opportunities for their players, noting the program has been to Italy, France, and South Africa over the past decade. The game would require a rescheduling of Michigan's home opener that's currently set for September 5. This game would provide another chance to grow our international fanbase, Moore said.

FIA and Formula E agree 10-year extension to electric world championship
LONDON: The FIA and Formula E have agreed a 10-year extension to their partnership, securing the future of the FIA Formula E World Championship until at least 2038. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Announced on Friday, the new multi-year agreement between the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile and Formula E ensures the world's premier all-electric racing series will continue to operate under the FIA's governance for another decade beyond the current deal. The extension is a pivotal moment for Formula E, which has recorded 20 percent year-on-year growth since its inaugural race in 2014. The sport now attracts more than 400 million fans worldwide and reaches a global TV audience of about half a billion. Described by the FIA as a milestone for innovation and sustainability in motorsport, the renewed deal will allow Formula E to accelerate its expansion, pursue long-range partnerships and enhance its position as a testbed for electric vehicle technologies that translate to consumer markets. 'The extension of the agreement governing the FIA Formula E World Championship is a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to foster long-term stability, innovation, and growth across all areas of motorsport,' said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president at the FIA. 'This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological progress, which are all central to the championship's unique identity and purpose. It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all. We are delighted to be continuing this journey with Formula E, and I look forward to seeing it grow even further, both on and off the track, in the years to come,' he added. Formula E's cutting-edge credentials were further bolstered by the recent launch of the GEN3 Evo race car, which accelerates from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds, about 30 percent quicker than a current Formula 1 car. It has a top speed of 200mph and regenerates nearly half the energy used in a race. Sustainability is a core pillar, with tyres containing 35 percent recycled materials and bodywork incorporating recycled carbon fibre and natural fibres. Craig Edmondson, chief commercial officer at the FIA, added: 'Formula E has not only demonstrated impressive growth since its inception, but has also led the way on sustainable innovation in our industry. This is a landmark agreement for the FIA and Formula E, and we are excited to be working with the championship in the years to come.' The deal also provides the long-term security required to invest further in vehicle performance, fan engagement, and technological advancement. Formula E is targeting faster top speeds, enhanced aerodynamics, better tyre performance, and closer racing. 'We've believed in Formula E since Day 1, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it's headed. This is the motorsport of the future, a championship that combines the very latest technology, close-combat racing, and a mission that really matters,' said Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global, Formula E's majority owner. 'With the FIA's continued backing, we can now take the next big steps — scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve. 'With this new agreement in place, Formula E is now positioned better than ever to define the future of motorsport — more innovative, more inclusive, more sustainable — and to inspire the next generation of fans, drivers, and partners around the world,' he added. Formula E's roster includes major automotive manufacturers such as Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Maserati, Stellantis, Mahindra and Lola-Yamaha, with 11 teams and 22 drivers competing in cities including Jeddah, Monaco, Tokyo, London, Miami, and Shanghai. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said: 'Formula E's growth since its inception has been nothing short of extraordinary, with hundreds of millions of fans and world-class teams and drivers deciding to choose highly competitive electric racing. 'This long-term extension of the partnership enables us to continue building the brand, investing in the product and delivering some of the most captivating racing that has made us famous. 'With this long-term extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational,' Dodds added. Formula E has topped global rankings for environmental, social and governance performance in sport for the past three years and continues to reduce freight emissions while delivering positive legacies in its host cities through its Better Future Fund. With global EV sales forecast to exceed 40 percent of all vehicle sales by 2030 and battery production expected to triple, the series is positioning itself at the forefront of technological and cultural shifts in motorsport and mobility.
