6 Weird (But Totally Normal) Things About Your Newborn - Middle East Business News and Information
Welcoming a newborn is an exciting experience, but it can come with some surprises. Babies are tiny, adorable, and sometimes puzzling. If you've noticed some unusual behaviors in your little one, rest assured—many of these quirks are completely normal. Here are six common but strange things you might notice with your newborn.
Newborns' eye muscles are still developing, so it's common for their eyes to wander or cross, especially when they're tired. This might look concerning, but it's usually just their way of learning to coordinate vision. By about 4 months[1] their eyes should align consistently. In the meantime, stimulate their sight with a high-contrast mobile above their crib (securely fastened, of course!). Soft, natural lighting in the nursery can also help them adjust without overstimulation.
Your baby's velvety skin might start flaking or peeling in their first weeks. This is a natural process as they shed the protective vernix they were born with. A lukewarm bath and very gentle cleansing are all that's needed—sometimes, just a light dab of a trusted baby lotion, can help maintain that natural moisture balance. The key is to use these products sparingly, keeping the focus on gentle care without overdoing it. [2]
Those tiny red bumps on their cheeks? Baby acne, or neonatal acne, is a common skin condition that typically emerges between two to four weeks after birth. Characterized by tiny red or white pimples on a baby's cheeks, nose, or forehead, it affects about 20% of newborns. The exact cause isn't fully understood, but it's believed to be related to hormonal changes that stimulate the baby's oil glands. Fortunately, baby acne usually resolves on its own within a few weeks to months without leaving scars. To care for your baby's delicate skin, gently cleanse their face with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, with baby-safe soap or cleanser (and avoid scrubbing!). If the acne persists beyond a few months or appears severe, consult your pediatrician for further guidance. [3] [4]
Hiccups are a reflex caused by their immature diaphragm adjusting to breathing, swallowing, or even feeding. While the 'hic!' sounds dramatic, they rarely bother babies. To ease them, try holding your little one upright after feeds in a quiet corner of the nursery. If hiccups strike during playtime, lean into the moment. They're a sign their nervous system is developing just right! [5]
That adorable jerk of the arms when they hear a loud noise? It's the Moro reflex, an instinctual response to stimuli. While startling, this reflex usually fades by about 5 to 6 months. Swaddling can help them feel secure (make sure their hips have room to move!). Pair this with a safe sleep environment: a firm crib mattress, no loose blankets, and a room free of dangling cords or bright lights. [6] Sleep Challenges and Quirky Patterns:
Newborn sleep can be as unpredictable as it is endearing. It's common for infants to follow a polyphasic sleep pattern meaning they sleep in several short bursts throughout the day and night rather than in one long stretch. Some evenings, you might notice your baby seems wide awake or unusually restless. These variations are part of their natural developmental process as they gradually build a more regular sleep routine. [7] If you're finding it tricky to settle your little one, you might enjoy trying out the Johnson's 2-Step Baby Sleep Routine. It's a simple approach involving just a gentle cuddle and a quiet moment together that helps signal bedtime. Many parents find that this easy routine can gradually encourage a more consistent sleep pattern without any fuss.
Newborns are full of surprises, and while some of their quirks might seem strange, they're usually just part of their development. Remember, every baby is unique, and what's normal for one might not be for another. If you're ever unsure, don't hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician. After all, parenting is a journey of learning and embracing the weird and wonderful moments along the way.

PharmaJet® Enters into MOU Agreement with Egyptian UPA and EVA Pharma to provide Needle-Free Delivery for Routine Immunization in Egypt
PharmaJet®, a company that strives to improve the performance and outcomes of injectables with its enabling needle-free injection technology, today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement with the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) and EVA Pharma, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies driving healthcare innovation and access across the Middle East and Africa, to explore the integration of needle-free delivery of inactivated polio vaccine into Egypt's routine immunization program. The signing event took place in Cairo at the African Health ExCon healthcare conference on June 26. The agreement includes provisions for distribution, technology transfer, manufacturing, and new pharmaceutical product development, as well as collaborating to increase needle-free access within Egypt and regionally. The UPA seeks to incorporate new technologies into its portfolio, aiming to expand the benefits of vaccination against certain infectious agents, improve pandemic preparedness, reduce total immunization costs, and improve foreign exchange rates. Tropis® Needle-free adoption offers several strategic advantages for Egypt including substantial immunization cost savings of 38% or more over six years1, reduced vaccine hesitancy2,3, increased coverage2, and the potential for medical technology localization. EVA Pharma is a leading pharmaceuticals and medical appliances manufacturing company that has vast experience in manufacturing, registering, marketing, and promoting pharmaceutical products. 'This collaboration can transform immunization by making it safer, more accessible, and less painful for children and caregivers,' said Nicolas Boege, Director of Global Commercial & Corporate Development at EVA Pharma. 'By introducing this technology, alongside localized technology transfer and manufacturing, EVA Pharma is committed to scaling innovation that strengthens public health systems. We are proud to collaborate with UPA and PharmaJet to localize needle-free delivery and accelerate its integration into Egypt's immunization programs and beyond.' The adoption and introduction of Tropis with concurrent manufacturing technology transfer has the potential to advance UPA's goal of becoming the leader of immunization excellence and a hub of needle-free product manufacturing for the Middle East and Northern Africa. The current initiative will enhance pandemic preparedness, reduce immunization costs, and support Egypt's Universal Health Insurance project. It also emphasizes the critical importance of the first 1,000 days in a child's life, building on the earlier efforts of the '1000 Golden Days' presidential initiative. 'This collaboration with UPA and EVA Pharma has the potential to enable the children of Egypt to gain from the benefits of intradermal (ID) delivery with reduced pain and administration time. The UPA would benefit through cost savings and novel pharma product development and manufacturing opportunities with needle-free delivery, and we would be thrilled to expand PharmaJet's commercial applications into Egypt and regionally. It's a win-win all around,' said Paul LaBarre, Vice President of Business Development for PharmaJet. 'We look forward to contributing to early childhood development in this region by increasing the positive impact of needle-free immunization.' Tropis ID has been widely used for inactivated polio vaccine delivery in campaigns and supplemental immunization activities. It has been rigorously evaluated in a routine immunization setting in two recently published studies that showed greater than 94% acceptability amongst healthcare workers and caregivers3, reduced administration time3, and greater than 50% reduction in immunization adverse events compared with intradermal delivery with a needle.

The 2020 base year and all subsequent reporting years include all facilities aligned to Kenvue's structure upon separation from Johnson & Johnson in 2023 and do not include any operational or organizational exclusions. 2 The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks. 3 The inventory was compiled in accordance with the World Resources Institute (WRI)/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) (GHG) Protocol – A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (Revised Edition 2013) including the amendment to this protocol, GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance (2015). 4 We aim to meet the goal by end of fiscal year and publish the year after. 5 Renewable energy source is an energy source that is capable of being replenished in a short time through ecological cycles or agricultural processes (e.g., biomass, geothermal, hydro, solar, wind). Renewable electricity targets are achieved through a combination of actions, including on-site solar, virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs), direct power purchase agreements (PPAs), energy attribute certificates (EACs), also known as renewable electricity certificates (RECs), and green retail contracts. 6 Packaging for direct purchases may not include all externally manufactured products. Total weight of plastics packaging is calculated utilizing 2025 Business Plan volume and is not trued up to actual sales. Manual adjustments of <10% were made to 2025 Business Plan volume based on SME judgment to remove materials not assumed to contain plastics. 7 Recyclable, also defined as recycle-ready, is when packaging is designed for collection, sorting, and recycling using end of-life processes, but where collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure may not yet be in place for the packaging to actually be recycled. Best practices of 'designing for recyclability' guidance for plastic-based packaging include the Association of Plastics Recyclers in the U.S. Note: 'Designed for recycling,' 'designed for recyclability,' and 'recycle ready' are also used interchangeably and reflect the same meaning. Recyclability % was assessed using Ellen MacArthur Foundation recycling rate guidelines and Consumer Goods Forum golden design rules guidelines. For pure buy, data assumptions were made on recyclability at brand level. 8 Kenvue defines refillable or reusable packaging as packaging that is designed for either the business or the consumer to put the same type of purchased product back into the original packaging, is designed to be returnable and/or refillable, and accomplishes a minimum number of reuses by being part of a system that enables reuse. 9 Virgin plastic means newly manufactured resin produced from petrochemical feedstock used as the raw material for the manufacture of plastic products and which has never been used or processed before.
