BJP will say ‘Joy Bangla' after 2026 assembly polls: Abhishek

Time of India2 days ago
Kolkata:
Trinamool Congress
national general secretary
Abhishek Banerjee
on Monday said he would ensure that after 'Joy Ma Kali' and 'Joy Ma Durga',
BJP
would also say 'Joy Bangla' after the 2026 assembly polls.
Speaking at the Martyrs' Day rally at Esplanade, Banerjee said: "BJP used to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' earlier but now are saying 'Joy Ma Kali' and 'Joy Ma Durga'.
Mark my words and write this down, I will make them say 'Joy Bangla' after the 2026 elections.
"
"This is a victory for Trinamool Congress, this is a victory for the people of Bengal. BJP now has to bow before the very people it wanted to starve (by blocking central funds) and say 'Joy Ma Kali' and 'Joy Ma Durga'. This is a victory for 12 crore farmers, labourers, youth, tapashilis, Adivasis, and a victory for the culture and heritage of Bengal," he said.

"They used the income tax department to disturb Durga Puja committees and stop Durga Puja. They insulted Durga Puja, and now they have to say 'Joy Ma Durga'," he said.
"We will proudly speak Bengali. We should make a rule that in this session, we will speak Bengali in Parliament. Let me see who stops us. We are the children of Bengal, and we will not surrender," the MP added.
Banerjee said: "Before 2021, we said 'Khela Hobe'.
This time we are saying 'Poddo Phool Upre Fela Hobe (we will uproot the lotus)'."
"Why is BJP so irritated if someone speaks Bengali? Is it because they could not win in Bengal?" the Trinamool neta said. "Last month, I said that BJP would not cross 50 seats in Bengal. I do not make political predictions, but when I do, I do so after proper thought and with faith in the people."
"I can responsibly say that the way these people have humiliated, oppressed, tortured, insulted and exploited the people of Bengal day after day, just for their arrogance, ego, and pride, the few handfuls of Bangla-birodhi who are left — we have to oust them and throw them into the Bay of Bengal," he said.
Referring to the special intensive revision (SIR) by EC in Bihar, Banerjee said: "Thrity-two years ago on July 21, in demand of photo-based identification, 13 people sacrificed their lives to return democratic rights to the people of the country. On July 21, 2025, if we, the Trinamool workers, have to sacrifice our lives on the roads to stop the scam by Election Commission, we will do it. We will not let them it on Bengal's voter list.
If required, Trinamool will organise a greater movement in Delhi with the permission of CM Mamata Banerjee."
Banerjee also slammed Assam govt for trying to slap NRC notices on people from Bengal. "This time, they are using the Assam Foreign Tribunal, which does not hold any power in the land of Bengal, to send letters to our Rajbanshi brothers and label them Bangladeshi. Is it a crime to speak in Bengali? We will speak in Bengali. The more we do, the more they get irritated. Be proud to speak in Bengali," he said.

16-hr debate on Op Sindoor next: At RS council meet, Cong rubs it in, wants Dhankhar farewell

Two days after raising questions on the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice-President and saying that there was something more to it than meets the eye, the Congress on Wednesday went a step ahead, proposing at a meeting of the Rajya Sabha's Business Advisory Council (BAC) that Dhankhar, who was also the ex-officio Chairman of the Upper House, be given a farewell. Sources said Jairam Ramesh, the Congress's chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, made this proposal at the BAC meeting, but the government was learnt to be not in its favour. The Upper House is set to give a farewell to seven retiring members Thursday, which include the PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss and the MDMK's Vaiko. It is learnt that during the BAC meeting Ramesh said there should be a 'farewell function' for Dhankhar as well. The Congress, sources said, wanted to make a political point by seeking a farewell for Dhankhar who, they believe, was forced to resign. 'The government must answer why he (Dhankhar) resigned, what are the reasons, what is the secret behind it. We feel that 'daal mein kuch kaala hai (there is something fishy)'. He seems healthy and always keeps a good vocabulary. But what happened? He used to defend the BJP and the RSS more than the BJP-RSS people themselves,' Congress president and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, told reporters today. Kharge said the country should be informed about the reason for Dhankhar's resignation and 'who was behind it'. While resigning two years before the end of his tenure, Dhankhar cited health concerns and 'medical advice.' Sources said none of the other Opposition members of the BAC backed the Congress's farewell demand for Dhankhar during Wednesday's meeting. While Dhankhar has been silent since his surprise announcement Monday night, the political row his exit has triggered has refused to die down, even as the Election Commission (EC) Wednesday set the ball rolling for the election of the next Vice-President. Asking the government to 'clarify the circumstances' surrounding Dhankhar's resignation, CPM MP John Brittas claimed that 'information from certain quarters suggests a senior minister sought his resignation on behalf of the government'. 'The contrast between the Prime Minister's enthusiastic endorsement of Dhankhar ji as 'Kisan Putra' during his (vice-presidential) candidacy and the cryptic, delayed statement following his resignation heightens intrigue,' said Brittas. 'If the government continues to evade questions, it would be fitting for Dhankhar ji to break his silence to uphold the dignity of the office,' he added. The BAC allocated 16 hours for a discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha next week, starting on Tuesday. While the government was noncommittal on the Opposition's demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should reply to the debate, sources said he may 'choose the occasion to convey his government's robust response to the terror attack and its stand on a host of issues'.

Farmers stage protest seeking scientific MSP as recommended by Swaminathan panel

Activists of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday putting forward various demands. Speaking at the agitation site, district president of the KPRS Sharanabasappa Mamshetti criticised the BJP-led Union government for its reluctance to fix Minimum Support Price (MSP) as calculated by the National Commission on Farmers (NCF) headed by M.S. Swaminathan. 'Our main demand is 50% MSP above the comprehensive cost of production (C2 + 50%) as recommended by the Swaminathan commission. The Union government has to take a decision. Unfortunately, the BJP-led Union government, which talks volumes about doubling farmers income, is reluctant to implementing the Swaminathan report,' Mr. Mamshetti said. The agitating farmers raised slogans against both Union and State governments for their anti-farmer and pro-corporate policies. 'There is no major difference between the BJP-led government at the Centre and the Congress government in the State when it comes to farm policies. The Union government is allowing imports of pulses with little or no import duty. If that happens, local pulses producers cannot compete with foreign pulses which are sold at much cheaper prices,' Mr. Mamshetti said. The agitating farmers also criticised the governments for withdrawing subsidies on fertilisers and delays in releasing crop insurance to the tune of ₹315 crore.

CM wants leader from Telangana to be made Vice President

Terming the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as unfortunate, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked the BJP-led Central government to nominate a leader from Telangana to the coveted post. He favoured nomination of senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya for the post claiming that the BJP could undo part of injustice it had done to the backward classes communities by nominating him to the coveted post. 'Telugu is the most spoken language after Hindi and there should be representation from Telangana at the national level in the form of Vice President,' he said. He however clarified that a decision on the choice of Vice President would be taken by the All India Congress Committee and asserted that he would request the Congress leadership if need be in this regard. He alleged that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was scuttling opportunities of the OBCs as could be seen from the removal of Bandi Sanjay from the BJP State president post and Mr. Bandaru Dattareya who relinquished his post as Haryana Governor. 'Venkaiah Naidu, the Telugu face tipped to be the President, was sent back. The NDA government should do justice to backward classes by nominating Mr. Dattatreya to the Vice President's post,' he said. Replying to a query, he said the country was in danger as long as the BJP-led government was in power and it would continue to be so till the BJP was removed from power.
