Fritz, Medvedev advance at DC Open
World number four Fritz, playing his first match since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals at Wimbledon earlier this month, cruised past Australia's Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 6-2 in 59 minutes.
The American dominated Vukic with a powerful service game while producing a slew of superb backhands in a stream of 28 winners to ease into a last 16 clash against Italy's Matteo Arnaldi.
"I felt like I played pretty well all around, but the shot that stood out was the backhand line," Fritz told The Tennis Channel after his win.
"I don't usually like that shot but it just felt like every single one I tried today was going in."
Fritz was always in control of his game against the current world 105 Vukic, breaking to open up an early 3-0 lead before closing out the first set.
A similarly dominant start saw him take a 4-0 lead early in the second before he wrapped up a comfortable win.
Earlier, Russia's Medvedev was made to grind through a roller-coaster tussle with big-serving US player Reilly Opelka before coming through 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
After battling to square the match in the second set, Medvedev took advantage of Opelka's shaky serve in the decider to move on.
"I didn't return well until 6-5 in the second but I always tried to look for solutions," Medvedev said. "Maybe he got a bit tired with the heat and everything.
"Happy with the way I played better and better during the match and looking forward."

French Open sensation Boisson withdraws injured from Montreal
Roland Garros semi-finalist Lois Boisson announced Tuesday her withdrawal from the WTA 1000 event in Montreal due to a left adductor muscle injury, as the list of high-profile absentees from the Canadian Open continues to grow. "I (did) an echography this morning following the pain that I had on my left adductor during the tournament in Hamburg and it appears that I need a little bit more time to rest and heal it properly," world number 44 Boisson posted on social media. "I am very disappointed to miss the @obnmontreal... It was not an easy decision but I always put my health as a priority." The injury blow comes days after the 22-year-old backed up her performances at last month's French Open by winning her first tour-level event on the clay in Hamburg and breaking into the world's top 50. Ranked 361st in the world before Roland Garros, Boisson created a sensation by reaching the semi-finals of the Grand Slam tournament, beating top 10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva in the process. The Canadian Open has already seen a raft of big names withdraw from the women's and men's draws. Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen will both miss the WTA event in Montreal, while Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will not be in ATP action in Toronto. The Montreal tournament runs from July 27-August 7, and is one of the principal warm-up events ahead of the US Open on the hard courts of New York at the end of the summer.

Pieter Coetzé wins again at student games as Bayanda Walaza enters fray
Pieter Coetzé picked up two more medals at the World Student Games on Monday night, including his second gold of the showpiece to lift South Africa to third on the medals table. Coetzé won the men's 50m backstroke and finished second in the 100m freestyle to take his personal tally to three at the Universiade, which is mostly spread across Germany's Rhine-Ruhr region. Guy Brooks, Ruard van Renen and Olivia Nel claimed their second bronze gongs of the gala as they finished third in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay alongside Michaela de Villiers. By early Tuesday morning South Africa's tally at the Games stood at two gold, two silver and two bronze which placed them third behind the US and Japan. Coetzé dived into the freestyle race first, touching in 48.12sec to finish behind American Matthew King by 11-hundredths of a second. A little more than an hour later he edged the backstroke event, finishing first in 24.49, just two-hundredths of a second in front of Korean Yoon Jihwan. To date all South Africa's medals have come from swimming, which is being staged in Berlin, with Coetzé winning the 100m backstroke in a 51.99 world lead on Saturday night. Other medals have come from double Commonwealth Games champion Lara van Niekerk, who claimed took silver in the women's 50m breaststroke, and Brooks, Van Renen, Nel and Simone Moll with bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. Athletics started in Bochum on Monday, with junior world champion Bayanda Walaza winning his heat in 10.27sec, the second fastest time of the round behind the man he beat into second place at the under-20 global competition, Thailand's Puripol Boonson (10.23).
