North Carolina guard Ian Jackson transfers to St. John's to play in hometown for Rick Pitino
North Carolina guard Ian Jackson is transferring to St. John's and returning to his hometown to play for Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, the Red Storm announced on Monday.
A highly touted recruit from the Bronx, Jackson averaged 11.9 points while shooting 45.6% overall and 39.5% on 3-pointers. He became the first Tar Heels freshman to score 23 or more points in four consecutive games, and scored 20 or more in eight games.

North Carolina went 23-14 overall and tied for fourth in the ACC at 13-7. The Tar Heels beat San Diego State in the First Four, then got knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Mississippi.
St. John's was looking for backcourt help with Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith having used up their eligibility.
'We had big shoes to fill at the point,' Pitino said in a statement. 'Kadary and Deivon were awesome. The ball is now in the hands of our next great point (guard). Let's go Ian!'
In Pitino's second year, St. John's had one of its best seasons ever. The Red Storm went 31-5 and finished first in the Big East at 18-2 before winning the conference tournament. They earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament that was their best in 25 years, and beat Omaha before losing to Pitino's old nemesis John Calipari and Arkansas in Providence, R.I.

Jackson played three seasons at Cardinal Hayes in the Bronx before transferring to Our Saviour Lutheran for his senior year in high school. He played in the 2024 McDonald's All-American game. ___

He is widely considered the best player without a win on a major tour, having finished runner-up seven times, including a World Golf Championship and at the British Open at St. Andrews. Defending champion Aaron Rai, who led Friday evening one shot behind, took double bogey on the 16th hole. He wound up four shots out of the lead. Mac Meissner, Joel Dahmen and Sungjae Im were three shots behind. The cut came at 3-under 137. This is the final tournament of the regular season that determines the 70 players who advance to the postseason. Among those who are left out of the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs are Keith Mitchell, Max Homa and Sahith Theegala, who all missed the cut. Homa and Theegala were on the U.S. team at the Presidents Cup just 10 months ago. Danish twins Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard are still in the mix, but just barely. The cut was looking at 4-under par at one point. Both finished on 3 under and will now have 36 holes to play well enough to try to move into the top 70 — Nicolai is at No. 71, Rasmus at No. 82. Ledecky wins 800-metre freestyle at world swim championship, McIntosh takes bronze
SINGAPORE - A must-see race at the world swimming championship lived up to its billing. Canada's Summer McIntosh emerged with a bronze medal after a three-way duel from start to finish in the women's 800-metre freestyle Saturday in Singapore. The Toronto teenager, Olympic champion Katie Ledecky of the United States and Lani Pallister of Australia battled from the blocks to the wall with Ledecky claiming her seventh world title in the distance. McIntosh, seeking a fourth-straight gold medal in Singapore, ran second to the American star before making her move at the final turn for a brief lead after 700 metres. But Ledecky surged and delivered the knockout punch over the final 50 with Pallister closing fast behind her. Ledecky touched the wall in eight minutes, 5.62 seconds with Pallister less than four-tenths of a second behind. McIntosh ran out of gas and touched the wall 1.67 seconds after Ledecky. McIntosh will come up short in her goal of five gold medals in her five individual events. However, the 18-year-old is the favourite and world-record holder in the women's 400-metre individual medley on Sunday's last day of competition. McIntosh became the first Canadian to win three gold medals in a single world championship with victories in the 400 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Montreal's Ilya Kharun took bronze in the men's 100-metre butterfly Saturday to give Canada eight medals at the world aquatics championships — seven in swimming and one in diving.
