Cartels shift drug production abroad, hide low-grade drugs in everyday good
'In terms of risk, if a shipment gets intercepted they're losing less,' said Leonardo Correa, who heads the UNODC's monitoring and technical analysis in the Andes. 'Coca paste is also easier to mix with other products, which facilitates smuggling.'
The evolving tactics seek to profit from soaring production, with global output up more than third in a year, driven partly by Colombian President Gustavo Petro's decision to scale back the military campaign against the private armies of drug traffickers. It's a policy that may change after 2026 elections if angry voters back candidates promising a security crackdown. Petro's approval rating fell to 29% in June, according to local pollster Invamer.
Global cocaine production reached a record of an estimated 3,708 tons in 2023, up 300% over the last decade, according to the UNODC's 2025 World Drug Report published Thursday. That makes it the fastest-growing illicit drug market.
While drug violence 'has long been a problem in Latin America and the Caribbean, it is now spreading to countries in Western Europe,' the UNODC found. 'Traffickers are also riding a wave of record production, pushing into new markets across Asia and Africa.' Chemical Camouflage
Smuggling gangs have succeeded in mixing coca paste into products such as asphalt, vegetable oil and charcoal, according to the UN. Experts with some knowledge of chemistry then extract the product at the destination, Correa said. In December, Portuguese police dismantled a major cocaine laboratory. Such laboratories have also been found in Spain, Central America and elsewhere.
Satellite images show the increase in cocaine supply is being fueled by a surge in production of coca, the raw material for the drug, in Colombia. Output in Bolivia was stable, while in Peru it fell slightly, according to the UN.
In Colombia, Petro has sought 'total peace' through negotiations with guerrillas and the private armies of drug traffickers since taking office in 2022. So far these talks have failed to yield major demobilizations, while the groups have taken advantage of a relative lack of military pressure to seize more territory.
Many farmers have turned back to growing coca, after crop substitution programs introduced as part of a previous peace process in 2016 have been underfunded and poorly implemented. Producing coca provides them with a more reliable income.
Colombia's surging coca production and Petro's strained relationship with President Donald Trump put the Andean nation at risk of being decertified as a partner in the war on drugs by the US. That would put the country in the same category as Bolivia and Nicolas Maduro's Venezuela, and limit access to some aid and loans.

It's a self-contained, movable toilet unit that doesn't require plumbing. However, in the context of 'Porta-Potty parties", the term has taken on a dark, euphemistic meaning. It originates from online exposés about wealthy men, especially in places like Dubai, allegedly paying young models or influencers large sums of money to attend private parties where they are made to perform extreme acts involving bodily fluids, especially feces (hence the link to a 'portable toilet"). A blogpost by the organisation DetainedInDubai cited model Saint Mullan's video where she said she was approached by a man inviting her to a yacht party in Dubai. She further narrates in the video that she was offered £16,000 to fly to Dubai to allegedly fulfil a prince's bizarre fetishes, which included urinating on her. The content creator and fitness trainer told The Mirror that she never intended to travel to Dubai, but continued the conversation out of curiosity in a bid to see how far the man would go. In screenshots she shared, the unidentified individual claimed a 'prince" was hosting a private yacht party and had personally invited her, saying the prince 'loves beautiful women" and found her 'very attractive." The prince, reportedly worth £321 million, was allegedly willing to pay her £16,000 to join him and a friend, offering a sum that amounts to less than one percent of his net worth. The reports regarding these parties have been making rounds on social media since 2022. Ghanaian news aggregator @SIKAOFFICIAL1 in 2022 posted a viral thread which cited a Reddit post where an anonymous person said that she was raped, forced into degrading sex acts where she was forced to have sex with a dog, where older men rubbed her face on their feet, urinated and excreted on her. Women lured to these parties could end up facing criminal charges, even if they were brought in against their will. Radha Stirling, who heads Detained in Dubai, warned that the presence of married men could expose them to cases of adultery or indecency. 'Sex outside marriage may technically be legal now in Dubai," Stirling said, 'but organisers are twisting that reality. These women think they're going to a private party, instead, they're thrown into violent, humiliating situations with serious legal risk hanging over them". She disappeared after telling her mother she'd been invited to spend the night with two men posing as modelling agents. She never boarded her flight to Thailand. Ten days later, on March 19, Maria was found dumped on the side of a Dubai road with a shattered spine, broken limbs and internal injuries. She has since undergone multiple surgeries and remains in recovery, while her family stays by her side demanding answers. Dubai Police confirmed she is receiving medical care but claimed Maria had entered a restricted construction site and fallen from a height. It was a version that many find hard to believe, given the secrecy surrounding these elite parties. Russian lawyer Katya Gordon, who has tracked the case, alleged that Maria was left to die after being abused at one such party. She claimed Maria may have been forced into degrading sex acts involving human faeces, a theme allegedly central to these gatherings. Maria's mother told Ukrainian media that her daughter had no ID, phone or belongings when found. 'She's had three operations. She can't speak. We were told she went to a party, but the promoter says he never saw her. We're terrified of what really happened." Missing Since 1995: Where Is The Boy Chosen By The Dalai Lama?
A six-year-old boy, who was seen as a reincarnation of one of Tibetan Buddhism's most important spiritual figures in May 1995, hasn't been seen in the last 30 years. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, born in April 1989, was named by the 14th Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama. It's a religious position second only to the Dalai Lama himself. On May 17, 1995, three days after the announcement, Chinese authorities allegedly kidnapped Gedhun and his family. They have not been seen since. Beijing had not approved the selection. Weeks later, China installed its own Panchen Lama, Gyaincain Norbu. To this day, the Tibetan exile community acknowledges Gedhun as the true Panchen Lama, while the Chinese state promotes its handpicked appointee. Where Is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima? Over the last three decades, China has offered minimal information about Gedhun. In 2007 and again in 2020, Chinese officials said Gedhun had received an education, graduated from college, and was working. They claimed he and his family wished to maintain a private life and " not be disturbed." No photos, video, or public appearances have ever substantiated these claims. Independent access has never been granted. In May this year, on the 30th anniversary of Gedhun's disappearance, multiple governments and international organisations renewed calls for transparency. UN human rights experts, the European Union, and countries like Germany, Italy, and the US demanded that China disclose Gedhun's whereabouts and allow independent access. Human Rights Watch said, "The Chinese government kidnapped a 6-year-old and his family and has disappeared them for 30 years to control the selection of the next Dalai Lama and thus Tibetan Buddhism itself. Concerned parties should press the Chinese government to end this cruelty and secure the freedom of Gendun Choki Nyima and his family." In India, Tibetans in exile held demonstrations in Dharamshala, Bylakuppe, and Mysuru, calling for China to confirm whether Gedhun was alive and safe. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima's Role The Panchen Lama helps in identifying the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. With the current Dalai Lama now 90 years old, that responsibility has grown increasingly sensitive. This week, the Dalai Lama confirmed there will be a successor, saying that the 600-year-old institution will go on. The announcement comes amid fears that Beijing intends to control the succession process as it did with the Panchen Lama. Since fleeing to India following the 1959 uprising in Lhasa, the Dalai Lama has spent decades advocating for greater autonomy for Tibet. In 2007, China formalised its role in religious succession by requiring state approval for all reincarnations of Tibetan lamas. The move was condemned by Tibetan leaders as a blatant attempt to politicise a sacred tradition. Gyaincain Norbu, China's state-appointed Panchen Lama, has risen within party ranks. He is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and in June, reaffirmed his loyalty to the Communist Party in a high-profile meeting with President Xi Jinping. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima remains unseen and unheard. The Tibetan government in exile continues to claim that he is the rightful Panchen Lama. In an official statement in 2020, it said, "China's abduction of the Panchen Lama and denial of his right to religious practice is not only a violation of his individual rights but also an affront to Tibetan culture and belief."

He said that people who kill others by wacking a baseball bat on their head or knifing needed to be thrown out of the US, even though they were citizens, and called it his administration's 'next job'. Trump's proposals 'unconstitutional' Trump's proposal came weeks after Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate released a memo giving US attorneys wide discretion to decide when to pursue the denaturalization process to "advance the Administration's policy objectives", reported ABC News. Individuals who have engaged in torture, war crimes, human trafficking and human rights violations are some of the cases US attorney should pursue, the memo says. Amanda Frost, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, told ABC News in April that the administration could try to target naturalized US citizens, who can lose their immigration status if they've committed treason or falsified information during their naturalization process. However, she said those instances are rare. "If someone's a naturalized citizen, there could be an effort to denaturalize that person and deport them," Frost said. "But then it would have to be that they committed some sort of fraud or error in their naturalization process. An unrelated crime could not be the basis for denaturalizing and deporting somebody." 'The citizenship of individuals will be revoked if they engage in the commission of war crimes, extrajudicial killings, or other serious human rights abuses; to remove naturalized criminals, gang members, or, indeed, any individuals convicted of crimes who pose an ongoing threat to the United States; and to prevent convicted terrorists from returning to US soil or traveling internationally on a US passport,' the memo read.
