Mumbai, May 19 (PTI) The Customs officials seized 36 exotic reptiles from a passenger who landed at the Mumbai international airport from Bangkok and arrested him.
A wildlife rescue team from RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) was called for assistance in opening the consignment, identifying and taking care of the species until further actions were to be initiated, said an official from the Forest Department.
The Wildlife Crime Control has already issued orders for deporting the live reptiles under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), officials added. PTI ZA NSK

Home buyers fraud: ED secures custody of 2 Ramprastha Group directors
Gurugram, Jul 23 (PTI) The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Wednesday secured two-day custody of Sandeep Yadav and Arvind Walia, promoters of Haryana-based realty company Ramprastha Group, in connection with a money laundering probe linked to an alleged Rs 1,100 crore fraud with homebuyers. The two were arrested on Monday after the Gurugram zonal office of the federal probe agency raided three premises in Delhi and Gurugram, including those of the directors, early morning on that day. Yadav and Walia are directors and majority shareholders in Ramprastha Promoters and Developers Pvt Ltd (RPDPL). They were taken into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The federal probe agency produced the two in the court of an additional session judge, following which the ED secured their custody. The agency conducted a survey against the group in September 2024. It is alleged that the RPDPL collected about Rs 1,100 crore from more than 2,000 homebuyers for various housing schemes like Project Edge, Project Skyz, Project Rise and Ramprastha City (plotted colony project) in various sectors of Gurugram during 2008-11. The possession of the flats or plots is yet to be given, even after 15-20 years, the sources said. Earlier this month, the agency attached colonies and plots spread across more than 1,900 acres and worth over Rs 681.54 crore of the group in Gurugram as part of this investigation. The money laundering case stems from multiple FIRs filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi and Haryana Police based on complaints of numerous homebuyers against RPDPL and its promoters, like Yadav, Walia and Balwant Chaudhary for their 'failure" to deliver promised flats and plots within the promised timeframes, the ED had said in a statement. The company and its promoters 'diverted" the funds sources from buyers of these projects to its group companies as advances for the purchase of land parcels, instead of using them for completion of promised homes, it had said. Three more held in Agra religious conversion case
Agency: PTI Agra, Jul 23 (PTI) Agra Police on Wednesday said it has arrested three more accused in the ongoing investigation into a religious conversion case registered on May 4, 2025, under multiple sections of the BNS and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals held in connection with the case has risen to 14. In a statement issued by Agra Police, it was revealed that the three suspects were arrested from Agra's ISBT area based on names that emerged during interrogation of previously arrested suspects. Police teams had been dispatched for their arrest, and they were held on Wednesday. Those held have been identified as Junaid Qureshi (30), Abdullah (20), and Abdul Rahim (27) – all three residents of northeast Delhi. According to the police statement, one of the accused had allegedly held a Scheduled Caste woman from Haryana captive and forcibly arranged her marriage to co-accused Junaid through a qazi in Rajasthan. The arrested individuals are accused of luring women into relationships and subsequently pressuring them into conversion. Abdul Rehman was allegedly in contact with Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, a figure previously linked to conversion rackets. The trio allegedly created fake documents to facilitate the conversions. Jatra troupe owner & actor face legal action for displaying ball python
Kendrapada: In a recent development, the forest department has initiated legal proceedings against the owner and an actor of a jatra troupe for allegedly showcasing a ball python during a rehearsal in Jajpur district. The forest range officer of Bairi, Aditya Pradhan, confirmed that a raid was conducted at the office of Tulasi Jatra troupe owner, Anant Narayan Dhal, in Bikramtiran village. However, the team was unable to rescue the python as no one was present at the location. A case has been filed against both Dhal and actor Sai Satyajit Panda under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, among other regulations. On Wednesday, Panda appeared at the range office with the ball python and presented documents proving his legal possession of the reptile. "While owning a ball python as a pet is not illegal, it requires proper licensing. Furthermore, using such animals for entertainment purposes mandates permission from the Animal Welfare Board," Pradhan added. The ball python, classified as an exotic species under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, was allegedly used in violation of the Performing Animals (Registration) Rules, 2001. These rules, part of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, are designed to ensure the humane treatment of animals in entertainment. They include stipulations on registration, transportation, housing and measures to prevent unnecessary suffering.
