Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said his government will conduct a fresh caste re-enumeration exercise in the state in about 60 to 70 days, following a directive from the Congress high command.According to official sources, the modalities for the re-enumeration are likely to be discussed during the cabinet meeting on Thursday. The Congress top brass on Tuesday directed the state government to undertake a caste re-enumeration in Karnataka to address the concerns of certain communities who claimed that they were excluded from the caste survey conducted 10 years ago."The high command said that some complaints have come because the survey had happened in 2015-16, it has almost been nine-ten years old. So in a short period, in about 60-70 days a re-enumeration will be done. We are not rejecting the entire report (given by the Backward CLasses Commission). Principally the report is accepted, only re-enumeration will be done," Siddarmaiah told reporters in Chikkaballapura.Asked if he was disappointed with the party high command's directive for re-enumeration instead of acting on the report under the consideration of the cabinet, he said, "We will go by the high command's decision. It is not my decision, it is not the decision of the cabinet or our government, it is a decision of the high command. High command has asked for re-enumeration." The decision comes even as the Social and Educational Survey report, popularly known as 'caste census' was under the consideration of the state cabinet.Addressing media in Kalaburagi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said re-enumeration is essential as the data available is 10 years old."The criterias that were used in the earlier survey will remain, along with that if anything was left out it will be added. But the re-survey is essential because the data available is ten years old and in ten years many have come into OBC, many were added. So considering all these things a fresh survey has to be done, nothing other than that," he said.Various communities, especially Karnataka's two dominant ones -- Vokkaligas and Veershaiva-Lingayats -- have expressed strong reservations about the caste survey that has been done, calling it "unscientific", and have been demanding that it be rejected, and a fresh survey be conducted.Objections were also raised by various sections of the society, and there are also strong voices against it from within the ruling Congress. After a long wait, the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes' survey report was placed before the cabinet for the first time on April 11.The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government (2013-2018) had in 2015 commissioned the survey in the state. The State Backward Classes Commission, under its then chairperson H Kantharaju, was tasked with preparing a caste census report. The survey work was completed in 2018 towards the end of Siddaramaiah's first tenure as Chief Minister, and the report was finalised by Kantharaju's successor K Jayaprakash Hegde in February 2024.

Derogatory remarks against Amit Shah: Rahul Gandhi to appear before Jharkhand court on August 6

RANCHI: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, will appear before the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa on Wednesday, in a defamation case registered against him for an alleged objectionable remark against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Ranchi on Monday to attend the last rites of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. After paying his respects in Soren's native village, Nemra, Gandhi returned to Ranchi and will proceed to Chaibasa on Tuesday to appear before the MP-MLA Court as directed by the Jharkhand High Court on June 10. The High Court had earlier dismissed Gandhi's plea challenging a non-bailable warrant issued by the Chaibasa court, which had ordered his personal appearance by June 26. Gandhi's counsel had sought an exemption under Section 205 of the CrPC, but the court rejected the request, insisting on his physical presence. Following this, Gandhi approached the High Court, where his lawyer argued that scheduling conflicts prevented an earlier appearance. After consultations, August 6 was agreed upon as a suitable date for the hearing. The legal trouble stems from a 2018 speech during an AICC plenary session in New Delhi, where Gandhi allegedly referred to BJP leaders as "murderers" and "liars." He had stated, 'The people of this country will never accept a lying BJP leadership drunk with power… They will accept a man accused of murder as BJP President, but the same won't be tolerated in Congress.' A BJP worker, Pratap Kumar, filed a complaint in Chaibasa's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in July 2018, prompting the court to take cognizance in February 2022. Summons were issued to Gandhi, followed by a bailable warrant after he failed to appear. With his continued absence, a non-bailable warrant was eventually issued in May 2025. The case highlights the ongoing political tensions as Gandhi faces judicial proceedings over his remarks.

Go beyond politics to work towards improving city's infrastructure, urges Ashwini Vaishnaw

Going beyond politics, Karnataka and the Union government should work together to improve Bengaluru's infrastructure, urged Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology. He was delivering a virtual keynote address at the opening of SAP Labs' largest campus in India at Devanahalli here on Tuesday. He said the Union government was committed to working with the State government, despite political differences, to improve the infrastructure condition of the city. Rail connectivity The Minister further said that the government was keen to improve the transportation facility within the city and outside the city. 'We are planning to double the rail connectivity within the city and to the city from outside in the next three years,' he said. Earlier, inaugurating SAP Labs India Innovation Park, on 41 acres of land at Devanahalli, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, 'Both Airport Metro line and suburban rail were being fast tracked to be ready by 2029. He said he was committed to balancing, decentralising, and sustainable growth beyond the core of Bengaluru.' He said that his government was happy to partner with SAP Labs in areas like digital governance, smart cities, skilling, and sustainability to empower MSMEs, and enhance government services in the State. The new SAP facility represented the global enterprise's deep trust in Karnataka's capability, the Chief Minister said. Since 1998, SAP Labs India, headquartered in Bengaluru, has grown to become SAP's largest R&D facility outside Germany. 'As we advance in clean energy, sustainable mobility, and eco-conscious growth, investments like this demonstrate how economic progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,' Mr. Siddaramaiah said. On education and skill development, he said, with an ambitious ₹2,500-crore programme supported by the World Bank, his government was strengthening first-grade colleges, establishing a Centre of Excellence, and enhancing R&D capabilities to build a skilled, future-ready workforce aligned with the demands of advanced technologies. Sindhu Gangadharan, managing director, SAP Labs India and head of customer innovation services, SAP said, 'India's rise as a global technology powerhouse is not just a story of scale — it's a story of ingenuity, resilience, and relentless innovation.' Thomas Saueressig, member of the executive board of SAP SE for Customer Services and Delivery said, 'It is a global innovation hub that will help our customers move from insight to action with enterprise-grade AI, data, and applications created right here in India.' Addressing the gathering Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India, said, 'When SAP entered India in 1998, the country was future for the company and now, India a huge market for SAP.'
