Nafuzi will pick first XI based on performance, not reputation

The Stara day ago
SUBANG JAYA: National coach Nafuzi Zain is leaving no room for favouritism as Malaysia gear up for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Championship in Indonesia from July 15-29.
Despite having a handful of players with senior team experience in his 30-man squad, Nafuzi has made it clear – reputation means nothing without performance.
'There is a small group who've trained or played with Harimau Malaya, but every player will be assessed equally,' said Nafuzi.
Nafuzi, who has coached Terengganu and Kedah in the local league, took over as the national Under-23 coach this year.
'I will select the best based on what they show in training and friendlies, nothing is guaranteed.'
Menacing: Haqimi Azim Rosli (left) is one of the high profile strikers in the 30-man squad for the AFF Under-23 Championship.
Among the more high-profile names in the squad are strikers Haqimi Azim Rosli, Fergus Tierney; defender Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili; midfielders Alif Ahmad, Mohamad Abu Khalil; winger Alif Izwan Yuslan; and creative playmaker Haykal Danish Haizon, all of whom have featured in senior team set-ups.
Still, Nafuzi insists it's performance that counts.
'This is a fresh start for everyone. I have also brought in young talents and some familiar faces from past Under-23 squads. What matters is who can elevate our game not past appearances or name value.'
The team are currently in centralised camp and will play three friendly matches against Police (July 5), Melaka (July 8), and Negri Sembilan (July 11) before departing for Jakarta on July 12.
While the tournament is yet to begin, the hype has already kicked off, particularly from Indonesia's vocal fanbase and media.
Nafuzi, however, is keeping his squad laser-focused on what matters most, football.
'We have seen the provocations, but we won't be drawn into that. Our focus is on ourselves. I expect a great game, a great atmosphere, especially when we face Indonesia, but we'll do our talking on the pitch.'
His message to the players is simple – stay grounded and take it one game at a time.
'We want to reach the final, of course. But for now, the focus is our opening match against the Philippines. Start strong, build momentum, that's our goal.'
With all 30 players having reported for camp, Nafuzi is using this critical preparation window not just to drill his tactical philosophy, but also to understand his squad's chemistry.
'This is the first time this group is assembling for a tournament, so this camp is important. They need to adapt to our style, and I need to observe how they respond, on and off the field,' he said.
Malaysia's Group A campaign begins against the Philippines on July 15, followed by matches against Brunei (July 18) and hosts Indonesia (July 21) at the iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, where passion, pressure, and pride will collide.

Malaysia start strong in U-18 Asia Cup but lose Harith to head injury

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia opened their Under-18 Asia Cup campaign with a dominant 4-0 win over Kazakhstan, but the victory came at a cost after midfielder Harith Afi Rishaudin was rushed to hospital with a head injury. Harith was struck in the head by an opponent's hockey stick during the Group B match at the Dazhou Stadium in China on Thursday and was taken off for stitches. "He was bleeding and taken to the hospital," said coach Sufian Mohd. "I'm not sure if he will be available for tomorrow's match." Despite the injury setback and some disjointed play, Malaysia cruised to a comfortable win with goals from Harieq Hadief Fariq (13th minute), M. Thanesh (27th), captain Iman Faris Faizo (42nd) and Izz Ilham Azrul Ridzuan (47th). Malaysia converted two of seven penalty corner attempts. "The players were a bit disorganised, and we missed quite a few chances. Our finishing wasn't good," added Sufian. Malaysia will face Indonesia, who were thrashed 10-0 by Japan, in their second group match on Friday. Results Group A: Bangladesh 3 Hong Kong 0, Taiwan 2 Uzbekistan 8, Malaysia 4 Kazakhstan 0; Group B: Japan 10 Indonesia 0, China 9 Sri Lanka 0.

Harimau Malaya drawn with Iran, Tajikistan in CAFA Cup debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya will face a tough challenge in their CAFA Nations Cup debut after being drawn in Group B with hosts Tajikistan, defending champions Iran and Afghanistan. The 2025 edition of the Central Asian Football Association's (CAFA) flagship tournament will run from Aug 29-Sept 8, with Group B matches to be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. World No. 18 Iran are the highest-ranked team in the group, followed by Tajikistan (104), Malaysia (131) and Afghanistan (160). Malaysia open their campaign against Tajikistan on Aug 29, before taking on Iran (Sept 1) and Afghanistan (Sept 4). For the record, Malaysia have not played World Cup-bound Iran since their 2-0 defeat to the Middle East side at the 2007 Asian Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Group A, based in Tashkent, features hosts Uzbekistan (57), Oman (77), Kyrgyzstan (103) and Turkmenistan (142). The group winners will advance to the final in Tashkent on Sept 8, while the runners-up will play for third place on the same day in Dushanbe. Malaysia's first appearance at the CAFA Nations Cup comes at a time when the team are starting to show promise under new coach Peter Cklamovski. The Australian has overseen back-to-back over Nepal (2-0) and Vietnam (4-0) in the Asian Cup qualifiers and will use the tournament as preparation for upcoming qualifying matches against Laos — away on Oct 9 and at home on Oct 14. "Our debut in the CAFA Nations Cup marks another important chapter for Harimau Malaya on the international stage. With the right preparation, unity, and belief, the squad will rise to the challenge and make the country proud," said the national team in a statement on Instagram.
