20 Overhyped Travel Destinations
Eiffel tower in Paris
Lucky for us, a post on the popular Ask Reddit page is here to help alleviate a bit of the sting. In it, user sidvatscse asked people to dish about the travel destination they hyped up "so much" but then, once they went, was a complete disappointment. I don't know if I agree with every opinion, but it's kinda curing my FOMO, so without further ado, here are some of the best answers!
"Plymouth Rock. It's tiny and in a cage, lol."
"Jamaica. The sexual harassment is off the charts. I'll never go back."
"Dubai. It's a fake plastic paradise built on slavery."
"Mt. Rushmore. It's much smaller than expected."
"The Hollywood Walk of Fame. I went to LA for a trip, and I was shocked by how disgusting the Walk of Fame, the famous Chinese Theater, and that general area were! It didn't feel safe, and I was out of there quickly."
"Cairo. I really love Egyptian history, so I was a huge fan of seeing the pyramids and the new Egyptian Museum, but man, that city is rough. I got harassed and catcalled a bit too much for my liking."
"Paris. I love it now, but the first time I went as a kid, the smell of piss everywhere wasn't really giving me the expected 'city of love' vibes."
"I loved Rome, but it was the single most crowded city I had ever visited."
"The Taj Mahal was touristy and somewhat fatiguing. I found out I have only so much desire to see vast quantities of marble. Weird fact: The bathrooms were free to tourists but Indians had to pay."
"Weird one, but Salem, Massachusetts. It's just a joke now, people marketing and profiting off the witch trials, but when you go it's like, here's an old house, it's old…they said witches lived here. There were no real witches, so in reality, it was just women who lived here. That's an old chair, that's an old bed...etc."
"Florida. Hot, ugly, bugs, and humidity."
"New Orleans. The food was amazing, but the condition the city was in just bummed me out. Roads and homes were in need of major repairs, and the smell of literal human shit while downtown was rough."
"Oh, definitely Venice. Everyone talks about how magical it is…the canals, the history, the vibe. But when I got there, it was way more crowded than I expected, super touristy, and honestly kind of smelled in some parts. It felt like a postcard come to life, but with way too many people fighting for the same photo spot. Not the dreamy escape I'd imagined."
"I love New York. I hyped it too much, though; it's definitely a great city, just not the same as the movies and how it was in my head. I still like the real New York, but was expecting more…"
"Amalfi Coast. A sweaty bus ride (as the traffic is awful and you can't park anywhere) to be shoulder-to-shoulder with people all the time and eat a €12 lemon sorbet. And the tiny beaches are very meh."
"Bali. The beach is not even great."
"Barcelona."
"The Alamo."
"My definition of hell would be to be stuck in Las Vegas forever."
"Didn't much care for San Francisco. Monterey stole my heart, though."

Travelers Are Sharing The Destinations That Are NOT As Good As People Say They Are
Whether you like to travel to another country, eat out at a nice restaurant, or simply go out, I'm sure there is a place that you've heard all the buzz about, then you went, and said, "meh." On the always social subreddit r/AskReddit, Reddit user u/Otherwise-Bit-8679 asked people to name a place that is not as good as everyone says it is. The results will surely get people who are from there very upset: 1."Dubai. Dreadful place. One gigantic shopping mall in the desert. Tacky, soulless, and unbearably hot." —u/graemo72 2."Bondi Beach. There are few beaches in Australia worse than Bondi." —u/The_Devils_Flower 3."Times Square. It's flashy, sure, but the crowds, prices, and sensory overload make it more stress than fun." —u/DesperatePurple5798 Related: 4."Las Vegas." —u/SapphireHazexxxx_ 5."Myrtle Beach. It's just brownish gray water. The Caribbean is a much better experience." —u/Bidesign54 6."Japan. I lived there for years and it's amazing, but I see too many posts absolutely glazing it." —u/William_Ballsucker 7."Bourbon Street. Tourists come to New Orleans—and that's great—but they complain that the city smells like stale beer and vomit. It doesn't, but Bourbon does. For me, the smell of the French Quarter is sweet olive and jasmine, coffee, and a faint scent of bleach from the early-morning cleaning of the bars. It's a magical place; don't sour your experience of it by walking down that shithole street at night, especially on holidays. There are two places worth visiting on Bourbon, Fritzel's and Galatoire's." —u/ConclusionAlarmed882 8."Aspen. It's scenic, but the people are garbage. One of the coolest concert venues, but it's full of jerks hitting on women and picking fights. Great restaurants, but it's just a 'who knows who' contest. And everything is insanely expensive and geared toward the wealthy. Just becoming a shitty billionaire show-and-tell contest." —u/hippychemist Related: 9."Miami. Its a sh*thole of crime and drugs." —u/Soda-Popinski- 10."Rio. While the old, historic part of the city had some appeal, overall, the best part of it was flying over it. It reeked of open sewer from the airport into town. The beach at Copacabana was so disgusting, I couldn't imagine people using it. You had to be so overtly careful; it wasn't fun. Other parts of Brazil are much better." —u/ann102 11."Nashville." —u/captgbv 12."Disneyland. Overpriced, overcrowded, and people there are just Give me a decent pub and a pint any day." —u/Extra-Sea1715 Related: 13."I thought the Rockies would be rockier than this! That John Denver's a f*ckin' liar." —u/Deltron_Zed 14."Bali. Dirty, crowded, and full of foreigners." —u/cheap_as_chips 15."All of Florida. It stinks." —u/bangbang995 16."Atlantic City, NJ. Gotta drive through hooker land just to get there. Then there are so many tweakers outside every attraction." —u/ilikestuff1231234 17."Long Island beaches. The sand is dirty, and you can't see past your ankles in the water." —u/RetroBerner 18."Gotta be the United States" —u/SirBallzack Related: 19."Venice. It's disgusting and smelly, especially when it rains, and just looks decrepit." —u/HoopoeBirdie 20."The Galapagos. The main island is a tourist trap, and you can't see any of the good parts without paying through the nose for a cruise that is authorized to go to said good parts. The best inhabited island is San Cristobal, easily. The other inhabited island, San Isabel, is kind of a shanty town." —u/Suspicious_Duck2458 21."Texas. Big, flat, and the worst combination of heat and humidity. It's like a live-action remake of Wall-E with triple-digit heat." —u/wombatgeneral 22."The zoo. You think, as a kid, it's magical, then once you become an adult, it's honestly depressing." —u/Any_Independence1993 finally, "Earth." —u/Academic-One467 Is there a tourist location that screams OVERRATED to you?
