Pretorius, Senokwane, Yusuf earn maiden Test call-ups
Senokwane also impressed with the bat, amassing 559 runs with two centuries to his name. Both players also recently made their South Africa A (SA 'A') debuts against West Indies A.
At just 19, Pretorius enjoyed a breakout season in the CSA 4-Day Series. He struck three hundreds in five first-class games at an impressive average of 72.66, including a crucial 114 in the final that helped secure a hard-fought draw for the Titans against the Lions.
They are joined in the squad by another first-timer DP World Lions fast bowler Codi Yusuf.
Test captain Temba Bavuma will lead the group that includes five uncapped players. Among the new faces are Momentum Multiply Titans batting duo Lhuan-dré Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane, both of whom have received their maiden call-ups to the national setup.
Proteas Men's head coach Shukri Conrad has named a 16-player squad for the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, set to take place at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo from 28 June - 10 July.
Yusuf, meanwhile, has been a standout performer for the Lions. The right-arm seamer claimed 23 wickets at an average of 22.39, playing a pivotal role in guiding his side to a second successive appearance in the 4-Day Series final.
The other uncapped players in the list are Titans batter Dewald Brevis, the second-highest run-scorer in the domestic first-class competition this past season, and Hollywoodbets Dolphins off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen, though both have previously toured with the senior side.
Earlier this week, Subrayen's form was on full display in SA 'A's four-day win over West Indies A, where he delivered with both bat and ball, scoring an unbeaten half-century and picking up a fivefer.
The squad also sees the recall of Lions batter Zubayr Hamza, marking his return since his last appearance against New Zealand in February last year.
Several players - Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs - have been rested for the series.
'We've opted to rest some players to manage their workload ahead of a busy season,' said Conrad.
'We've been closely monitoring performances in domestic cricket, and it's great to see players like Lhuan-dré, Lesego, and Codi breaking through.
'Dewald deserves a lot of credit for how he has progressed over the past 12 months,' added Conrad.
'He's shown real growth and maturity in the longer format, and it's encouraging to see him evolving into a more complete cricketer.
'Prenelan has earned his spot through consistent performances and offers us a lot with his all-round skills.
'This tour provides the ideal platform to expose them to the demands of Test cricket and see how they respond. It's also our first tour to Zimbabwe since 2014, so we're really looking forward to heading over there later this month.'
Fast bowling trio Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams were not considered for selection.
'Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s. The plan is to ease him back into the game, starting with the shortest format, and then slowly work him up to the longer formats. We'll be keeping a close eye on how he handles the workload as he builds toward playing Test cricket again,' said Conrad.
'With Gerald, it's part of a bigger plan to help him better handle the physical demands of red-ball cricket. The idea is to give him the best chance to avoid a recurrence of the injuries that have kept him out of Test cricket since the tour against Sri Lanka.
'His recent performances in T20s have been really encouraging, but the focus is on his long-term growth and ensuring he stays fit across all formats.
'Lizaad is progressing well and is currently in the final phase of his rehabilitation from his knee surgery,' concluded Conrad.
The squad will depart for Bulawayo on 24 June from OR Tambo International Airport.

T20I Tri-Series: Five things' Proteas learned in Harare
Dewald Brevis was a standout performer for the Proteas in Harare. Picture: Zimbabwe Cricket The Proteas' fell just short of stealing the T20I Tri-Series from New Zealand in Harare, but there was plenty for coach Shukri Conrad to ponder about in his first white-ball competition. Independent Media's Zaahier Adams selects five takeaways from the series. 1. Youth is the future Conrad showed his hand when the white-balls squads for Australia were named prior to the final, but Lhuan-dre Pretorius repaid the faith with an exhilarating knock in the final. After struggling during the early stages of the competition, with the Powerplay actually proving to be the most difficult time to bat in Zimbabwe, Pretorius was moved down to the middle-order. But he is most destructive at the top, and Conrad shifted him back up for the final and Pretorius responded with a maiden T20I half-century. The teenager is an ideal backup for Ryan Rickelton. 🙌 Absolutely fantastic from Lhuan-dré Pretorius! A destructive half-century in the Final as he rose to the occasion when it mattered most 💥🇿🇦. #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 26, 2025 Video Player is loading. After a couple of years working out his gameplan after the initial hype, Brevis is now ready to be unleashed. There are few cleaner strikers of a cricket ball in the world at the moment, and along with the athleticism that Brevis brings in the field, he is a dynamite T20 package. The 22-year-old took the Proteas to within one strike of lifting the trophy, and the pain felt from not taking his team over the finish line will linger and be the motivation to complete the job the next time he has the opportunity. 3. Thanks Keshav It was not much more than a year ago when Keshav Maharaj was tasked with bowling the final over of a tense T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh in New York. In typical Maharaj fashion, the left-arm spinner responded to the call and completed the job. But it is clear that Maharaj's services will no longer be required in the shortest format. The Proteas are seeking for allrounders across formats, and George Linde has shown that he can smash a long ball, while Senuran Muthusamy is a capable batter that was even utilised at No 4 in one of the matches. The duo have overtaken Maharaj in T20 cricket with Muthusamuy's economy of 6.36 during the series showing his capabilities with the ball. End of the PowerPlay in this Tri-Nations Final 🏆. A rapid start in this first innings; our Proteas Men remain on the hunt for that all-important breakthrough to swing the momentum! 💥🇿🇦 New Zealand are 52/0 after 6 overs. 🏏#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 26, 2025 4. Razzle Dazzle Reeza Hendricks is South Africa's leading run-scorer in T20Is this past 12 months - with almost double the next best of Tristan Stubbs. In all likelihood, Hendricks could win his third consecutive CSA T20 Player of the Year award on Thursday. But that's still not going to be enough for 'Razzle Dazzle' to keep his place at the top of the order. The stylish right-hander does not fit the gameplan that Conrad wants to move forward with, even though he scored 41 and 37 in two matches against New Zealand. At 34-years-old, it is hard to see Hendricks making a comeback to the T20I squad and there is a feeling that the Harare final may have been his last for the Proteas. 5. Revitalised Lungi The big Proteas seamer often has to endure plenty of criticism, but there's no doubt that Ngidi has taken plenty of confidence from his performance in the WTC Final at Lord's. Equally, Ngidi is approaching peak fitness which has a significant effect on his bowling. Coupled with his skill-set of being able to deliver cutters and slower balls almost at will, Ngidi is a vital part of the Proteas' T20 attack. He has also showed greater consistency during the death overs in Harare.

Beefy Bartho Hlekani can fill a big hole for Lions after injury blow against the Sharks in Currie Cup
Angelo Davids of the Lions scores, despite the attentions of Phiko Sobahle of the Sharks at Emirates Airline Park this past weekend. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Lions' handsome 46-5 Currie Cup victory over the Sharks came at a cost, with flank Izan Esterhuizen suffering a serious injury. However, this setback could be offset by the timely arrival of burly Bathobele Hlekani, a Junior Springbok who made a huge impact in Italy. Hlekani has been with the Sharks but, curiously, has slipped out of their net. His signature is a significant coup for a Lions squad that usually sees players going the other way — to Durban, as has been the recent case with Springbok Edwill van der Merwe and Emmanuel Tshituka. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Hlekani was one of three players from the victorious Junior Bok side at the World U20 Championship to be invited to train with the Springboks. Lions coach Mzwakhe Nkosi said they would like Hlekani to join them pronto. 'Izan's injury looks like a season-ender,' Nkosi said. 'We will try and get Batho to Joburg sooner rather than later. Yeah, he's probably out for the season, so we have to scramble hard. I just spoke to the CEO; we will have to source another openside flanker as soon as possible,' the coach added. The Lions outclassed a Sharks side that was packed with newcomers. With ball in hand, Bathobele Hlekani drives forward, a formidable force who will soon bring his Junior Springbok power and talent to the Lions' pack. Photo: World Rugby Image: World Rugby 'I wouldn't say we were a more experienced side, but we are probably more settled,' Nkosi said. 'Nico Steyn just turned 22, and Jarrod Cairns has only just turned 23. SJ Kotze is still 21; RF Schoeman hasn't turned 22 yet. We are probably a whole lot more settled than JP's team (Pietersen's). When SJ came on, I thought he made a difference.' 'I am happy with the level of performance,' Nkosi continued. 'We were a bit apprehensive. We haven't played a game. The Pumas have played two or three, Griquas have played, and Province have played two. "So, we and the Bulls have gone in cold. We were nervous. So it's good that we got the cobwebs out, and also that we got a result like we got.' Nkosi praised the performances of Angelo Davids and Rabs Maxwane, who were constant threats on attack. Davids has joined the Lions from the Stormers. 'If you can have guys like Angelo and Rabs on the edges, you want to get the ball to them sooner rather than later. That's who we are and how we want to play. "Angelo will hit his straps. He must have had three games in two seasons. He has been frustrated; his game hasn't improved at the trajectory that he would have liked. "So, hopefully, before the start of the URC, he can get to a place where he can compete. And obviously, there is a vacancy with the departure of Edwill van der Merwe, so hopefully, he can put his hand up to stake a claim in that URC team.'

Lions poach Sharks' Junior Bok star
The 20-year-old Hlekani played for the Sharks in last year's Currie Cup and came off the bench in their European Challenge Cup round-of-16 clash against Lyon in April. The Lions have acquired the services of Bathobele Hlekani after his standout performance at the U20 World Championship. Picture:. A world champion Junior Springbok is set to swap Durban for Joburg after the Currie Cup. Utility forward Bathobele Hlekani was a standout performer in Italy as South Africa won the World U20 Championship for the first time since 2012. He was also one of three Junior Boks – along with scrumhalf Haashim Pead and winger Cheswill Jooste – invited to train with the Springboks during their recent two-week conditioning camp in Johannesburg. The 20-year-old Hlekani played for the Sharks in last year's Currie Cup and came off the bench in their European Challenge Cup round-of-16 clash against Lyon in April. He is part of the Sharks' 2025 Currie Cup squad but was rested for their opening match against the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday. According to Planet Rugby, Hlekani will join the Lions ahead of the 2025-26 Vodacom URC season – bucking the recent trend of talent heading in the opposite direction. It's a major coup for the Lions, who have already secured Pead through to 2028 and signed exciting Grey College trio Ethan Adams, Sherwin Buys and David Hayidakis.
