Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy made quite the splash at the Rocket Classic, both kicking off the tournament with record-breaking rounds. On Thursday, Potgieter, a rising star from the PGA Tour, nearly walked off the ninth green with a solo lead, but a missed 12-foot birdie putt left him tied with Roy at the top of the leaderboard. They both opened the 2025 tournament at Detroit Golf Club with impressive 10-under 62s, setting a new 18-hole scoring record for the event, according to the PGA Tour.

Both players enjoyed bogey-free rounds, racking up eight birdies and an eagle each. The 20-year-old South African rookie, Potgieter, dazzled on the front nine, shooting a remarkable 7-under 29 to kick off his day. Meanwhile, Roy finished strong, nailing a 30-foot chip-in for eagle at the par-5 17th. 'Just one of those days everything was clicking,' Roy shared after the round.
Stellar performances were expected, given the ideal scoring conditions. Rain earlier in the week had softened the course, making the typically generous greens even more inviting. Since joining the PGA Tour schedule in 2019, Detroit Golf Club has consistently been one of the most scoreable venues. 'It was pretty easy,' said Andrew Putnam, who shot a solid 64.
Not too far behind the leaders, Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman, and Mark Hubbard all finished with 9-under 63s, tying the previous tournament scoring record. Two-time major champion Zach Johnson was part of a group of seven players sitting at 8-under. Lee, who recently faced a challenging stretch that included the U.S. Open and the Memorial, praised the course setup. 'Hopefully, the PGA Tour can have more courses like this. It would be a bit more fun and less stressful,' Lee remarked.
For Potgieter and Roy, getting off to a strong start is crucial during this key stretch of the season. Potgieter kicked off the week sitting at No. 73 in the FedEx Cup standings, while Roy was at No. 100. Both players are in a race to secure full status for the upcoming season and possibly qualify for some elevated events. 'That's probably the biggest goal this year,' Potgieter shared with reporters after his round at the event.

With a crowded leaderboard and several top-50 players in the mix, including a frustrated Collin Morikawa and Keegan Bradley, the pair will need to keep up their momentum over the next three rounds to remain in the hunt.

It marked his third top-10 finish of the season (T6 at the Cognizant Classic and T3 at the Zurich Classic), allowing him to climb six spots in the FedEx Cup rankings (from 60th to 54th). He also moved up seven places in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), from 97th to 85th. Knapp has had numerous ups and downs throughout the season. This has led him, on one hand, to post a sub-60 round (a first-round 59 at the Cognizant Classic), and on the other, to notch only three top-10 finishes in 18 tournaments played (13 cuts made). He has carded 27 rounds with scores in the 60s or better; however, Kanpp hasn't been able to string them together in a way that would have translated into a stronger overall result this season. R&A to host 'last-chance qualifier' on-site at 2026 Open Championship
The R&A announced Monday that, beginning next year, it will host a qualifier for the final spot in the Open Championship field on-site at Royal Birkdale. Responding to a fan survey that said it wanted more live golf, the R&A will debut what it's calling a 'winner-takes-all Last-Chance Qualifier' on Monday of tournament week that will feature up to 12 players competing at Royal Birkdale for a shot to earn the last spot in the field of 156 players. The R&A will also host a Heroes Classic on Tuesday of tournament week that will feature a number of past championships and special guests. The last-chance shootout – similar to a Monday qualifier for regular PGA Tour events – is in addition to the other avenues into The Open. Final qualifying for this year's Open will be held Tuesday at four sites around the United Kingdom. 'We have asked (fans) how we can make their experience of attending The Open even more enjoyable and they have been clear – they want more live golf, more opportunities to engage with the traditions of golf's original championship, and more activities on-site to watch, listen and play,' said Mark Darbon, chief executive of the R&A. 'As a result, we have introduced new features which we believe will elevate The Open for fans, particularly on the days leading up to the championship, providing a memorable experience of attending Royal Birkdale with friends and family next year.'

Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class is currently ranked fourth nationally with 21 commitments, as the incredible momentum continued last week after coach Elko and his staff landed back-to-back offensive linemen, including standout four-star pass protector Zaden Krempin, who chose the Aggies over Michigan and Texas. This week is big for the coaching staff, knowing that two of the program's priority prospects, five-star wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster and four-star linebacker Tank King will annouce their commitments on Friday, July 4, which, according to several recruiting analyst should be a perfect day for the Aggie coaching staff. However, in today's landscape, nothing is set in stone until Early Signing Day. Still, after losing out on three-star offensive tackle Aaron Thomas, who committed to Ohio State, and, on Saturday night, four-star athlete Legend Bey, who is headed to Tennessee, landing Feaster and King would be significant recruiting wins that should lead to more success in the coming weeks. Right now, 247Sports Staff projections favor Texas A&M for both prospects, who are coming off their official visits to College Station, and had nothing but positive things to say about the coaching staff. On the field, Feaster's size, speed, and explosiveness after the catch make him an instant impact offensive weapon. King, despite being the 29th-ranked linebacker in the cycle, plays above his weight, displaying elite instincts as the first tackler in the run game, while possessing the size and athleticism to cover tight ends in the passing game. Right now, Texas A&M has landed three wide receiver commits, as four-stars Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams, and Mike Brown have all shut down their recruitment. At the same time, four-star linebacker Storm Miller remains the only linebacker commit in the cycle.
