Marcelo Mayer leaves Red Sox game with right wrist injury
A downcast Mayer, wearing a brace on his right wrist after the game, said he expects to have an MRI and is hopeful the injury is not a serious one.
'I don't know right now,' he said. 'I just iced it. It feels in some pain but hopefully it's not too serious and I can get back on the field soon.'
Mayer kept Boston's fifth-inning rally alive against Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo with a two-out walk that loaded the bases, then came around to score when Romy Gonzalez helped the Red Sox flip a 5-0 deficit into a 6-5 lead with a grand slam to left field. After the inning, he was replaced at third base by Abraham Toro. ESPN cameras caught Mayer pointing to the area of his wrist in the dugout after leaving the game.
'I just felt a little tight grab in my wrist when I took a swing in my second at-bat,' Mayer said. 'I knew I really couldn't do anything after that so I just called it (a game).'
Mayer, hitting ninth in the finale of a three-game series, struck out and walked before leaving the game. He was playing third base in place of Alex Bregman, who had a scheduled night off as he continues his cautious return from a quad strain. Mayer did not play in Tuesday's loss.
The Phillies took an early five-run lead Wednesday when Lucas Giolito tied a career-high by allowing four home runs in the first four innings. Then, the previously dominant Luzardo lost the strike zone in the fifth, issuing four walks (including two with the bases loaded) before Gonzalez's homer. The Red Sox won, 9-8, in 11 innings thanks to a Carlos Narváez two-run shot in the 10th.
Entering Wednesday, Mayer had hit .230 with four homers, eight doubles and a .673 OPS in 43 games while admirably manning both third base and second base.

Former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman La'el Collins is signing with the Dallas Cowboys after a workout with the team, according to Tommy Yarrish. Collins, 32, last played in an NFL regular-season game for the Bengals in December 2022, when he suffered a knee injury. Released by the Bengals in September 2023, Collins signed in 2024 with the Buffalo Bills, which moved him from tackle to guard. He was released in August 2024 by the Bills. Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota
Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player.
