Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Is Getting An All New Multiplayer Mode Over 20 Years Later

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater isn't just a 4K remake of the original PlayStation 2 game, it turns out. The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade of MSG 3 is also getting some entirely new content, including a multiplayer mode called Fox Hunt.
Revealed during a Konami Press Start showcase on Thursday, Fox Hunt takes place online in the same world as the single-player story but with different gameplay. Mode director Yu Sahara, who's worked on Metal Gear in the past, distinguished it from Metal Gear Online, a multiplayer spin-off of Metal Gear Solid 4 that featured tactical stealth takes on traditional scenarios like team deathmatch and capture the flag.
'The landscape of multiplayer games has changed a lot,' he said during the livestream. Indeed it has, but the most appealing about Metal Gear getting multiplayer again is how old-school it might end up feeling compared to the current glut of extraction shooters, battle royales, and battle passes. Here's a quick teaser from the showcase:
Instead of bringing that back, Sahara and the team at Konami worked on updating what Metal Gear Online might look like decades later. The focus will still be on camouflage and staying hidden before choosing the right time to go after an objective or surprise an opponent, and footage in a brief teaser showed characters getting into what look like small D-Walker-type mechs on the battlefield. Also lots of operatives crawling around in leaf shrouds.
Konami didn't have anything else to reveal about the mode other than it will be arriving with the rest of Metal Gear Solid Delta at launch on August 28. In addition to Fox Hunt, the remake also features a Snake vs. Bomberman mode and one where he has to round-up monkeys from Ape Escape. Despite the new content, however, much of the base game appears to be an exceedingly faithful retread of the 2000s-era stealth thriller, just with modern controls and other tweaks to make it more approachable for new audiences. The original is still available to play as part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection released back in 2023.

Isabel Marant Spring 2026 Menswear Collection

If there's one French fashion brand that has wanderlust baked right in, it's Isabel Marant. Surveying the men's lookbook as styled by Emmanuelle Alt but also gazing into an imaginary landscape beyond, creative director Kim Bekker observed, 'He's headed to the steppes and out into the desert, from village to village, surfing.' Here, then, was a wardrobe for the eternal nomad, wherever he roams, be it Paris, the Sahara or Ibiza, one of the designer's favorite destinations, which appeared here as an embroidered postcard on the back of a varsity jacket. Linen shirts were layered over tees, and paired with easy, straight-cut trousers. Cargo details are a major current for spring, and here they appeared on blazers that were less utilitarian than refined, for the traveler who prefers keeping all his essentials right in his pockets. Drawstring waists gave tailored pieces a sense of ease while here and there an embroidered floral motif lent a tinge of romance without going full-blown folkloric. The color palette, too, told a story of scorched earth and canyon sunsets, in clay red, sage green and dusty rose. Statement pieces included a lightweight bomber in washed leather, an ecru jean jacket with floral embroidery on the breast pocket, and a washed-out denim jacket with a botanical print, an idea that also cropped up on jeans. The keepers here echoed Marant's philosophy: sophisticated enough to wear around the city, yet laid back enough for wherever the next flight lands.

Star-packed, Covid-shaped 'Death Stranding 2' drops this week

Japanese video game legend Hideo Kojima releases "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" this week, a star-studded PlayStation sequel inspired by the Covid pandemic. Kojima has said the follow-up to the meditative 2019 game, in which "Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus played post-apocalyptic deliveryman Sam Porter Bridges, is "about connection". "The social situation was that everyone was divided" when development began on "Death Stranding" in 2016, Kojima said as he presented the new instalment at Los Angeles' Summer Game Fest on June 8. "I said, let's get connected. Right after that, we had the pandemic, and my fiction became a little reality" as people communed over new digital channels, he added. "Death Stranding 2", which drops Thursday, reflects Kojima's hope that people will rediscover analogue ways of being together following the years of isolation, he said. The first "Death Stranding" was a hybrid between a hiking simulator and a classic action game. It was set in a gloomy, fantastical science-fiction universe where characters are aged by the rain and carry foetuses that warn them of dangerous ghostly creatures nearby. Reedus's character Bridges had the job of reconnecting the last outposts of civilisation in a devastated United States following a disaster. This time Bridges's adventures will bring him to Mexico and Australia, in a story that 61-year-old Kojima -- creator of the equally fantastical "Metal Gear" stealth action saga -- said was completely rewritten in light of Covid-19. "I already had the DS2 idea but I had to scratch that off because I experienced the pandemic. So I rewrote," he said. "It's a new connection... I put that in the game system and I want everyone to experience that," Kojima added. French actor Lea Seydoux -- a star of films like James Bond adventure "No Time to Die" or Quentin Tarantino's World War II romp "Inglourious Basterds" -- returns in 3D form alongside Reedus. But new big-name talent is also along for the ride, including American actor Elle Fanning and the likeness of "Mad Max" director George Miller. French singer Woodkid composed the score for the new episode. Kojima Productions, the eponymous studio the developer founded in 2015 after leaving Japanese giant Konami, said in March this year that the first "Death Stranding" had more than 20 million players. And the franchise is broadening out to other media, with a feature film in development with American studio A24 as well as an animated film. Kojima is already turning his bottomless energy to other projects, including a horror game, "OD", co-written with American director Jordan Peele ("Get Out", "Nope") and developed in partnership with Microsoft. He is also returning to the world of spy games in the vein of "Metal Gear" with a new espionage title, "PHYSINT". kf/tgb/lth

If Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid ever crossover, Kojima knows who should be a porter, even though they "won't be able to carry things so much"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A crossover between Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid is pretty unlikely. Hideo Kojima and Konami split on seemingly acrimonious terms, and we've only seen remakes and re-releases from the latter series for years now. Still, should it happen, Kojima has a notion about who'd manage the tricky job of being a porter the best. When asked by IGN during a Death Stranding 2 event who from the Metal Gear canon could make the jump over to delivering across the KNOTS, he named Dr. Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich, tech genius and Solid Snake's trusted friend. "Maybe Otacon!" Kojima laughs. "But he won't be able to carry things so much." Sadly, he's probably right. Physical strength and endurance are necessary qualities for any good delivery person in the wasteland of Death Stranding, and Otacon doesn't appear to have much of either. But, he's excellent and solving problems and knows a thing or two about improvising under pressure. Stuck somewhere with BTs hanging around, Otacon would find a way to somehow escape without taking too much damage. Same for Demens, who'd probably be left perplexed by some gadget or other by the military scientist. Otacon is the kind of guy you want around in a pinch, even if he's not the person you'd like assigned to your delivery. Unlike Sam Porter Bridges, Hal's backpack isn't getting too full. But maybe he's the sensible one in that regard, given how much of Death Stranding you spend picking up and re-Tetris-ing your own overfull pack of goods. This is all extremely hypothetical, and the Death Stranding games aren't in need of the boost. The second, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, arrives on June 26, taking place predominantly in Mexico and Australia instead of the US. Aside from having whole other countries and continents to wander, Sam gets more hands on this time, helping communities he encounters in different ways. As it's a Kojima Productions game, most narrative elements are protected through esoteric teases. There's a talking ventriloquist's dummy, though! Never change, Kojima. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater comes out on August 28, 2025. Hideo Kojima already has a Death Stranding 3 pitch that could relate to a DS2 plot device, but "I am not going to make it myself"
