Man tried to murder victim with machete after being released on bail
David Scott struck a man with the weapon after he and his accomplices forced their way into an address in Livingston, West Lothian.
The victim raised an arm above his head to protect himself during the attack and sustained serious injuries.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Scott, 28, was assessed as posing a significant risk of serious harm.
A judge told him that he would be placed under supervision for three more years in the community, when he would be on licence, and that he could be returned to prison if he breaches the conditions.
Lady Carmichael said: 'The jury found you guilty of attempted murder and of having an offensive weapon in a public place.'
Scott had amassed a substantial criminal record before he committed the murder bid on April 17, 2022, including for crimes of violence and breaching bail.
He was convicted of assaulting the man to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life and attempting to murder him.
While acting with others he forced entry to the address in Quentin Rise and repeatedly punched and kicked the victim on the head and body, repeatedly stamped on him and struck him with the machete.
Scott was also found guilty of illegally possessing the machete. The offences were committed after he was released on bail on February 28, 2021, at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
Defence solicitor advocate Gary Miller told the court: 'In general terms, Mr Scott maintains his position, which is one of innocence.'
He said Scott was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of seven and took medication for a long period but eventually stopped because of side effects.
Mr Miller said the father of two was 'associating with a very negative peer group' at the time of the offending.
He told the court: 'He is keen to use the time he will be incarcerated for as positively as possible.'

Paramedic who secretly gave woman drug to abort their child jailed for 10 years
A paramedic who caused a pregnant woman to miscarry after secretly putting abortion drugs inside her during sex has been jailed for ten years. Stephen Doohan, 33, from Edinburgh, researched the topic of abortion online after the woman told him she was pregnant. Doohan, who worked for the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship. In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant, the High Court in Glasgow heard. On March 17, Doohan inserted an abortion drug in her vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex, and the following day insisted on seeing her underwear after she noticed white discharge, the court heard. Doohan had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and depositing a drug into her vagina causing her to abort, and depositing with intent to cause her to abort. On Monday at the High Court in Glasgow, he was sentenced to ten years and six months in prison. The court heard that while off-duty, Doohan checked for information about the drug on a work system just two days before he first gave it to the victim. He convinced the woman to lie to medics at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary because he thought he would be arrested if she told the truth. The victim attended another regional hospital with her sister and was told that she was having a miscarriage. The court heard that in May 2023, the woman complained to the SAS, which launched an investigation. During sentencing, Judge Lord Colbeck said that Doohan had told the victim that he did not want children, but she later became pregnant. He said the victim's suspicions were raised after discovering the unusual discharge in her underwear and suffering stomach cramps. The judge said she returned to Doohan's flat and looked under his mattress when he went to the toilet, where she found some tablets. Lord Colbeck added: 'The complainer then carried out an internet search for abortion tablets and confronted you over your actions.' Defending, Mark Stewart KC, said: 'I express Mr Doohan's deep sorrow and regret for the actions he is now in the court charged with. 'His position is that he is filled with remorse for the harm he has caused, and the breach of trust his actions represented.' The court heard that Doohan had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that he had no previous convictions. Mr Stewart described Doohan's life as 'positive and useful'.

Hunt for two men who emerged from works van and attacked dogwalker
A man was left with a facial injury after being assaulted by two men from a works van while walking his dog in Airdrie. The 41-year-old man was walking his Japanese Akita along Aitchison Street when he became involved in an altercation at around 12pm on Friday, July 4. He was then 'punched to the ground' by two men who had exited a van and was taken to the Monklands District General Hospital for treatment to a facial injury. He has since been discharged. Detective constable Martin Daly, North Lanarkshire CID, said: 'Enquiries are ongoing as to what the cause of the altercation was, but the fact is that the injured man was punched to the ground and then further assaulted causing facial injuries. 'Unfortunately, we don't have a description of the suspects, other than they were White, and believed to be in some type of works van. They may have had overalls and/or high-visibility jackets on, but that's not confirmed as yet. 'Officers are checking local CCTV and carrying out door to door enquiries with residents in the area but would ask that anyone who may have information, or indeed any dash-cam or doorbell footage that may assist the investigation, to get in touch.'
