Gavin Lerena to strike back at Kenilworth

The Citizen08-07-2025
Craig Zackey and Richard Fourie are also in action.
Jockey championship leader Gavin Lerena had a quiet Hollywoodbets Durban July day by his high standards but looks set to bounce back with a vengeance at Kenilworth in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Lerena rode a single winner at Turffontein on Sunday, bringing his 2024/25 season tally to 246 – five ahead of triumphant July winner Craig Zackey and six ahead of reigning champ Richard Fourie, who came so agonisingly close in the big event in Durban.
Both Zackey and Fourie are in action at Kenilworth, but it's Lerena who appears to hold the best hand – including five ante-post favourites on the eight-race card.
The popular Joburg rider starts his book in Race 1 aboard the Vaughan Marshall-trained Day In Day Out, who is quoted at R5.50 a Win by Betway – third favouritism.
In Race 3, he partners Marshall's talented Time Fo Orchids – at R6.00 the Win.
The hot run for Lerena could begin in the fourth race with Red State (2.70), who will be saddled by veteran conditioner Ricky Maingard.
In the fifth, his mount is Firing On All Cylinders (R3.50) for Harold Crawford and Michelle Rix. Then it's on to Oni San (R5.50) for Marshall in a very open-looking sixth.
Paul Reeves will be giving Galloping Gav a leg up on Lovers Lane (R3.50) in the seventh and the rider completes his Cape Town sojourn on Peace Of Mind (R4.33) for Crawford and Rix in the lucky last.
Fourie takes just three rides – in Races 1, 2 and 3 – and might have a fishing outing planned for later in the afternoon.
Zackey rides seven on the card, with apparently his best chance coming in Race 3 with Dean Street from the Lucinda Woodruff yard.

11 South Africans fight it out among themselves in the Open

Almost any bet you can think of on the links at Royal Portrush. South African golfing fans are avid followers of their countrymen who play around the world – even more so in majors, such as the Open Championship that tees off at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland early on Thursday morning. That patriotic interest can be sharpened with a small flutter. There are 11 South Africans in the 2025 Open field, including former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, recent PGA Tour winner Aldrich Potgieter, SA Open hero Dylan Naidoo and 17-year-old amateur champ Bryan Newman. Ever-popular Oosthuizen is favourite to be the top South African finisher – at R4.50. He is a R6.50 chance to be the South African leader after the first round – and a R120.00 shout to win the tournament overall. Joint favourite (R4.50) to beat his compatriots is PGA Tour regular Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who is known for his consistency. Thriston Lawrence, who finished fourth, three shots behind winner Xander Schauffele, in the 2024 Open at Royal Troon – showing an affinity for links play – is a R5.45 chance to finish top South African. Naidoo's SA Open victory at Durban Country Club earlier this year caught the nation's imagination but he has so far struggled to make an impression overseas. He is at R36.00 to beat all his countrymen, while Newman is at R55.00. Betway is offering more than 100 different betting opportunities on the Open, including peculiarities such as the top left-hander; the likelihood of a hole-in-one over the four days; the top LIV finisher; one- and two-round match-ups in between two, three and five players; the top debutant and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler (and others) to make the cut ('Yes' R1.05, 'No' R7.90). Can the Proteas step up against stronger opposition?

South Africa and New Zealand will meet in a T20 match for the first time in more than eight years. Despite lying one place below New Zealand in the T20 International rankings, South Africa will be confident of picking up another win when the two sides clash in the tri-series tournament in Harare on Wednesday (1pm start). However, the Proteas will need to be at their best if they want to stretch their series lead after comfortably beating lower-ranked hosts Zimbabwe earlier in the week. South Africa have won 11 of the 15 T20 Internationals they have played against New Zealand, but the two teams have not met in a T20 match since February 2017. Since then, both sides have reached finals of the T20 World Cup (New Zealand in 2021 and South Africa in 2024). More recently, against other opposition, the Proteas have won only five of their 12 T20 Internationals in the last year, while the Black Caps have secured victory in seven of their 10 fixtures overs the same period. New Zealand tipped to win Based on their recent success, New Zealand are tipped on paper to come out on top, with 1.60 on offer for your Betway cash if they triumph. For a Proteas victory, there is more of a return, with odds of 2.30 available for the SA team to extend their lead in the tri-series table. As always, there are also a wide range of other bets available for punters, including 13.50 for an unlikely tie, as well as a long list of potential scores at various points through the match. Scheffler warning to Open rivals

Hometown boy Rory is main threat to world No 1. Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays a shot from the rough during a practice round prior to The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club, which starts on Thursday. Picture:The world's No 1 golfer looked bemused by the quirky bounces and breaks of a seaside links at last week's Scottish Open; but he remains favourite to win on another links layout at the 153rd Open Championship starting on Thursday. Scottie Scheffler is R6.50 for the Win at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland – a drift in price after his efforts in Scotland. Victory for him would mean a second major title in 2025 after his US PGA win at Quail Hollow. Despite struggling to read the greens in North Berwick, Scheffler still finished joint eighth and said afterwards: 'I feel I'm not far off my best.' Those are ominous words for the opposition from a man who has played 15 tournaments in 2025, won three of them and finished in the top 10 12 times. His main danger in the Open is Rory McIlroy (R8.50 a Win and also drifting), who will be playing on his hometown course. McIlroy was runner-up in Scotland, two shots behind surprise winner Chris Gotterup (R73.00 for the Open) and seems to be over a form crash that followed his US Masters triumph, which clinched him the Grand Slam. However, his inability to close out a win after leading in the final round had a hint of choke about it. 'I climbed my Everest in April, and … you've got to make your way back down and … look for another mountain,' said McIlroy this week. 'An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those.' Among shorter-priced contenders, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood has been attracting the most support in pre-tournament betting. Early in the week, he was at R22.10 to win his first major and at R6.80 for the Top 5, R3.75 for the Top 10 and R2.05 for the Top 20. Betway is running a plethora of Open markets: on national leaders, seniors, amateurs, previous champions etc. Leading Betway odds: (Win, Top 5, Top 10) Scottie Scheffler – R6.50, R2.20, R1.62 Rory McIlroy – R8.50, R2.90, R2.00 Jon Rahm – R11.50, R3.90, R2.50 Bryson DeChambeau – R19.50, R5.70, R3.50 Xander Schauffele – R20.90, R6.80, R3.85 Others of interest: Shane Lowry – R22.70 JJ Spaun – R91.00 Louis Oosthuizen – R120.00 Tiger Woods – R170.00 These Betway odds are correct at time of publication and subject to change.
