When clothes speak louder than words
From boarding school khakis to MAGA-red caps, clothes often carry meanings that go far beyond the wardrobe. Growing up, the phrase 'the clothes maketh the man' was an injunction to eschew jeans for chinos and T-shirts in favour of collared shirts. There's a lot of truth to it; try getting an upgrade on a flight when you're in slops, PT shorts and a slogan T-shirt, versus a suit and tie, or going to the boss to wheedle an increase. But just as the clothes we wear tell the world a little about who we want to be seen as, we've got to be careful of being condemned by association. For a while in the '80s, khaki clothing – the old tough cotton pants and button-up shirts beloved of farmers and boarding school pupils alike, was rendered toxic because of its association with rightwing extremism. The Brits had Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts; the Germans had Ernst Rohm's Sturmabteilung Brownshirts. South Africa had Eugene TerreBlanche's AWB in khaki. As a journalist in the early '90s, it was a strict rule not to go out on assignment wearing military surplus clothing, lest you be mistaken for a member of the security forces. At the same time, many of us writer types wanted to be mistaken as cool press photographers and deliberately wore the sleeveless cotton and canvas gilets loved by fishermen, hunters – and press photographers stuffing their lenses into pockets that normally took shotgun shells. Not all articles of clothing are so forgiving. Shemaghs and keffiyehs can be problematic for the unwitting: the Saudis and Emiratis wear red checked ones – while the black checked version has become synonymous with the Palestinian cause. Red hats are another, thanks to the unfailing efforts of Donald Trump's drive to Make America Great Again. I was wearing a red British and Irish Lions cap, of the exact shape and hue popularised by the tariff king, out on a walk last week when a passer-by looked me up and down witheringly. He shook his head pityingly. 'Xha! Sorry for you, né!' he said. It took 10 years for my khaki wardrobe to be socially acceptable again. Hopefully the radioactive half-life on my Lions' cap will be a lot less. NOW READ: Gold and Glamour: Masango by Siphosihle dazzles at the Hollywoodbets Durban July

Gavin Lerena to strike back at Kenilworth
Craig Zackey and Richard Fourie are also in action. Jockey championship leader Gavin Lerena had a quiet Hollywoodbets Durban July day by his high standards but looks set to bounce back with a vengeance at Kenilworth in Cape Town on Tuesday. Lerena rode a single winner at Turffontein on Sunday, bringing his 2024/25 season tally to 246 – five ahead of triumphant July winner Craig Zackey and six ahead of reigning champ Richard Fourie, who came so agonisingly close in the big event in Durban. Both Zackey and Fourie are in action at Kenilworth, but it's Lerena who appears to hold the best hand – including five ante-post favourites on the eight-race card. The popular Joburg rider starts his book in Race 1 aboard the Vaughan Marshall-trained Day In Day Out, who is quoted at R5.50 a Win by Betway – third favouritism. In Race 3, he partners Marshall's talented Time Fo Orchids – at R6.00 the Win. The hot run for Lerena could begin in the fourth race with Red State (2.70), who will be saddled by veteran conditioner Ricky Maingard. In the fifth, his mount is Firing On All Cylinders (R3.50) for Harold Crawford and Michelle Rix. Then it's on to Oni San (R5.50) for Marshall in a very open-looking sixth. Paul Reeves will be giving Galloping Gav a leg up on Lovers Lane (R3.50) in the seventh and the rider completes his Cape Town sojourn on Peace Of Mind (R4.33) for Crawford and Rix in the lucky last. Fourie takes just three rides – in Races 1, 2 and 3 – and might have a fishing outing planned for later in the afternoon. Zackey rides seven on the card, with apparently his best chance coming in Race 3 with Dean Street from the Lucinda Woodruff yard.

Touchline makes stylish Hollywoodbets Durban July debut at Saso's brunch marquee
Rapper Touchline made his debut at the Hollywoodbets Durban July and was a guest at Saso's brunch marquee. Image: Instagram/karabo_selolo Rapper Touchline attended the Hollywoodbets Durban July for the first time this year and was a guest at Saso's Brunch Marquee. Speaking to IOL, the rapper, whose real name is Thabo Mahlwele, shared how he had felt a bit of pressure when it came to attending Africa's biggest horse racing event. He enlisted the help of a stylist, KandyBoi, to help execute the Marvels of Mzansi theme. 'We just put a few things together and came up with like a look for myself, who never wears formal clothing, by the way. I went with him (KandyBoi) because I was probably going to buy a tracksuit.' Touchline admitted that his late arrival had him missing out on the day's main attraction, the horse races. 'It looks a lot like a lot of the events that we attend, but I've also had a limited experience because I haven't seen the rest of it,' he shared. Video Player is loading. 'I'm very grateful to be here, to see that your gift can put you in spaces that you couldn't even dream of, and meet people that you just looked at and marveled at,' he shared. For its second year at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Saso's Brunch Marquee moved away from the winning post, but expanded in terms of size, allowing for 800 guests. Curated by hip-hop star and cultural tastemaker Lusaso 'Saso' Ngcobo, the marquee made headlines last year for its historic debut and unmatched atmosphere. Once again, Saso's Brunch Marquee partnered with Maxhosa Africa for the decor and lifestyle elements. MaXhosa founder Laduma Ngxokolo, speaking to IOL, shared why they decided to come on board for the second time. 'Last year, we showed off; this year, we showed out and we showed up,' expressed Ngxokolo. It's a beautiful space, I don't think people get it yet, but once it hits their head, it will be a type of experience that they will always be longing for. 'I think Saso's Brunch has got its specific, well-refined market, if we're talking levels, if we're talking nuances.' Ngxokolo explained that when it came to the deco, MaXhosa curated elements such as the wallpaper, carpets, cushions, throws, and umbrellas. 'These are products that we offer as part of our Makosa Lifestyle brand, which is an extension of MaXhosa, a luxury fashion brand.' For first-timers like Touchline, the Hollywoodbets Durban July offered more than fashion, it was a moment of affirmation, proof that talent and authenticity can open doors to the grandest stages.
