
MP reviews underpass proposal at G Corner on Trichy-Chennai NH

He discussed the status of the underpass with officials National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and
during the meeting.
"The new VuP proposal at G Corner to prevent fatal accidents is making steady progress. The extent of railway land required for the project has been identified, and further developments to launch the construction work as early as possible were discussed," Trichy MP told TOI. While 3,100sqm of railway land was initially estimated to be required for the new infrastructure, the land requirements will be finalised while preparing a detailed project report (DPR).
The participants also discussed the alignment of the VuP and a new service road, creating an easy approach for the the Ponmalai railway workshop and adjoining residential settlements. Through new VuP, vehicles from service roads on both sides of the NH can access institutions and commercial establishments through the underpass and vehicles can ply on the highway without any interruption from the local traffic.
Presently, as service roads on both sides of the NH between G Corner and TVS Tollgate are not connected, commuters approach the highway in opposite directions, leading to accidents.

Bombay HC disposes of petitions as PMRDA to withdraw draft development plan
1 2 3 4 5 6 Pune: The Bombay high court on Tuesday disposed of eight petitions as 'infructuous' after the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) filed an affidavit informing it would withdraw its existing draft development plan (DP) in favour of preparing a new one for the next 20 years. The petitions had challenged the draft DP. However, the HC bench of chief justice Alok Aradhe and justice Sandeep V Marne has posted another petition filed by activists Ujjwal Keskar and Suhas Kulkarni for its next hearing on Aug 25. The said petition challenges the state's decision to appoint PMRDA as the special planning authority for the 23 villages merged within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits. "Keskar and Kulkarni have pleaded that PMC should be the planning authority for the merged villages," their lawyer Ritvik Joshi told TOI. On Aug 2, 2021, the PMRDA had issued an advertisement inviting such suggestions/objections. PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase told TOI, "We can go ahead with the formal process of cancelling the draft DP. We will send it to the CM." Consultant to PMRDA's development plan cell Vivek Kharwadkar said, "The order allows the development authority to start a new planning process, adhering to legal procedures. PMRDA can go ahead with actions related to planning in the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) for the next 20 years," he told TOI. Kharwadkar said preparatory work had already begun after PMRDA adopted a resolution to cancel the draft DP a few months ago. "The fresh exercise poses an opportunity to take into consideration the development carried out during the intervening period. The fresh plan will be based on latest data. The commissioner has emphasised upgradation of data over the last six months," he added. He further said, "Based on latest data, we will have a planning intervention which will take care of immediate demands and overcome the backlog of services. Also, a phased programme shall align with the Maharashtra govt's goals." Officials said the state govt would have to notify cancellation of the DP and the new planning exercise will outline a development roadmap for the next 20 years. Meanwhile, Keskar said, "The PMC had declared its intention under section 23 of the MRTP Act to prepare a draft development plan for the 23 merged areas. Our petition was that the MVA govt in the state had violated the 74th amendment to the Constitution and deprived the PMC of its authority under Schedule 13."

Negotiations bear fruit, Yemen defers Nimisha's execution
Kochi: The execution of Nimisha Priya, the Keralite nurse on death row at the central prison in Yemen's capital Sana'a for the murder of a Yemeni national, has been postponed following intervention by Indian authorities and religious leaders. Negotiations were underway to save the life of Nimisha, hailing from Kollengode in Palakkad, after her execution was scheduled for July 16, Wednesday. "The execution has been postponed until the prison authorities are notified of a new date," stated an order issued by the public prosecution of the Republic of Yemen. It also said the postponement was based on a directive from their attorney general. The development will give additional time for Nimisha's family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution. A trial court had sentenced Nimisha to death in 2018, and the verdict was later upheld by an appeals court. She was convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, with whom she started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage, in July 2017. She was accused of chopping his body and dumping its parts in a water tank. Sunni leader Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India, reached out to prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Sheikh Habib Omar, seeking his help to persuade Mahdi's family to accept blood money and grant pardon to her. Subhash Chandran of the action council told TOI that Musaliyar's intervention played a major role in the decision to postpone the execution. "Apart from a preliminary discussion with Talal's brother held on Monday, a second round of discussion was held on Tuesday. We are hopeful of progress in discussions in the coming days," he said. Musaliyar said Muslim scholars could hold talks with the judges and Mahdi's family members, and the negotiations would continue in the following days. The talks are being held based on Sharia law, which gives the victim's family the legal right to pardon the convict, either without any condition or in exchange for blood money, he said, adding that the PM's Office was informed about his initiative. Samuel Jerome of the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, who is coordinating the negotiation talks in Yemen, said he met Yemen's foreign minister on Tuesday after the execution was postponed. Nimisha's husband Tomy Thomas expressed his gratitude to officials and religious leaders for their intervention in the matter. CM Pinarayi Vijayan described the development as a relief and lauded the efforts of Musaliyar and the action council in the decision. Encroachments defeat purpose of non-motorised transport corridors in Coimbatore city
Coimbatore: The four non-motorised transport (NMT) corridors that the city corporation set up with the help of a German firm at a cost of Rs9.05 crore in 2023 to ensure a hassle-free travelling experience for the pedestrians and cyclists today cut a sorry figure with damaged pavement blocks and encroachments in many areas. They no longer serve their purposes and the pedestrians are left with no other option but to use the busy main roads crowded with vehicles. Announced in 2019 under the Smart City Projects Mission, work on the non-motorised transport corridors on Big Bazaar Street, Raja Street, Cross Cut Road and at Gandhipuram was completed a year after it commenced in 2022. The main highlight was dedicated footpaths for the pedestrians. The condition of non-motorised transport corridors is pathetic today - pavement blocks have been damaged, street vendors have encroached upon the space and converted the same into a sales platform, and the city corporation has turned it into a storage place for pipelines. They are no longer pedestrian friendly. It is to be noted that about one lakh pedestrians use Cross Cut Road alone daily, as per the previous corporation survey reports. Ameen, who runs a garment store on Cross Cut Road, said street vendors had occupied the footpath over the years. "Initially, when the plan was executed, it was really useful for pedestrians. Maintenance stopped after a few months. Encroachments mushroomed in the absence of monitoring by the corporation. Now, pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads filled with vehicles. Their safety is compromised today." TOI visited the NMT corridors on Tuesday and found that there were either damaged paver blocks or encroachments at every 100 metres. Some people had parked their two-wheelers on the footpath as well. M Sarala, who was waiting with her family to board a bus at Town Hall, said, "There's hardly any space for us to stand and wait for buses. We are forced to walk on roads, where vehicles refuse to slow down." K Kathirmathiyon, secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the corporation had failed in the execution of the NTM corridors. "It is not wide enough to accommodate dedicated bicycle corridors or create seating facilities." He also called on the city corporation to take steps to keep the NTM corridors free of encroachments. A corporation officer said they were planning to take out a drive to evict encroachments last month. "That didn't happen. We are planning to remove all encroachments on the NTM corridors on Cross Cut Road and Big Bazaar Street, which are commercial areas, in the coming weeks. We will decide on the date in consultation with police." Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said while they had carried out two eviction drives in the past, street vendors were quick to encroach upon the space again. "Measures will be taken to replace the damaged paver blocks with new ones. After the planned eviction drive, we will try our level best to keep the NTM corridors free of encroachments."
