MDMK must get specific number of tickets in election to receive EC recognition: Durai Vaiko

Durai Vaiko COIMBATORE: MDMK deputy general secretary Durai Vaiko said his party should receive a specific number of tickets in the assembly election to get a minimum recognition from the Election Commission of India (ECI). However, the final decision on the tickets would be made by the leadership of the party, he said. MDMK is part of the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu. "Since the election is coming, we need to strengthen our structure and have organised meetings of activities in seven zones, including the formation of booth committees," he said while interacting with reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport. He said the state govt arrested police personnel responsible for the death of Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga district. He emphasised that the state govt should ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. Durai said he had insisted in Parliament that the railways fare hike should be cancelled and the benefits given to senior citizens should be restored. Discussing globalisation, Durai remarked that 'our students are excelling in various places due to their proficiency in English. All the success came because of the bilingual policy. English is the language of global communication.' He accused the BJP of playing politics with language. MDMK drops resolution for more seats in 2026 election

Chennai: A week after MDMK adopted a resolution at its general council to seek additional seats from DMK in the 2026 assembly election, the party's working committee which met here on Sunday dropped the resolution. The working committee, which met in the presence of general secretary Vaiko and headquarters secretary Durai Vaiko, instead reaffirmed its commitment to remain in the DMK led alliance to keep 'fascist forces' at bay. The shift in MDMK's electoral approach comes in the wake of a few party functionaries including K Muthurathinam, MDMK's candidate in Palladam assembly segment in 2021 poll, joining DMK. "We never asked for double-digit seats from the DMK,'' he said. When asked whether the issue of seat-sharing was discussed at the working committee meeting, Vaiko said it was not brought up. He said Durai Vaiko's speech at the general council was misinterpreted as a demand for more seats. Durai Vaiko also sought to clarify his earlier statement made in Erode. "It was my personal opinion, not the party's official position. I merely said that if we contest in 12 seats, winning eight would qualify us for recognition. The final decision on seat-sharing will always lie with the party high command," he said. In the 2021 Assembly elections, MDMK contested six seats as part of the DMK alliance, all under the Rising Sun symbol of the DMK. The party won four out of six seats, but those MLAs were counted as DMK members in the assembly, as MDMK is not a recognized party by the Election Commission. Sources in MDMK said that dropping the resolution for more seats was a tactical retreat as the party wanted to tread cautiously.

DMK will secure majority, there will be no coalition government: Vaiko

MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Sunday said the ruling DMK would secure a majority in the 2026 Assembly election and there would be no need for a coalition government. 'The MDMK will work hard to ensure victory for the DMK and its alliance partners,' he said, interacting with journalists in Chennai. Asked about the future of the MDMK, he said the party had decided to support the DMK to prevent Hindutva forces from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Vaiko clarified that his party had not made any demand for seeking allocation of seats in two-digits, but had only expressed its desire 'to win eight seats to gain recognition from the Election Commission.' Recalling party MP Durai Vaiko's earlier response to the media regarding the number of seats the party was planning to contest, he said the former had only said the party might seek 12 seats since it needed to win eight. 'Even then, he clearly said a final decision would be taken by party high command,' Mr. Vaiko added. Mr. Durai Vaiko, who was also present during the media interaction, said reporters in Tiruchi had asked for his reaction to the demand for more seats by the DMK's allies. 'All I said was that every party has the right to expect more from the DMK. I also mentioned that MDMK office-bearers are keen on securing recognition, which requires us to win eight seats. So, we may need to contest in 12 seats. But the media portrayed it as though the MDMK had formally demanded 12 seats,' he clarified. When asked whether he would demand a reduction in the number of Tasmac-run liquor shops or advocate for their closure, Mr. Vaiko said prohibition was one of the MDMK's key demands. 'I travelled 1,600 km to highlight this issue. We shut down the liquor shop in my village and smashed liquor bottles. When the matter reached the court, the judges in the High Court and Supreme Court refused to intervene, saying it was the will of the village's people.' Asked if he would lead similar protests elsewhere, Mr. Vaiko said he would participate if a similar situation arose and people invited him to join protests against liquor shops. He also announced that the MDMK would celebrate the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai by organising a political conference in Tiruchi.

MDMK will seek more seats but not at the cost of coalition, says Durai Vaiko

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will seek a higher share of seats in the upcoming elections but without compromising on the collective interests of the DMK-led alliance, said the party's principal secretary and Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko on Saturday. 'A party must win at least 12 Assembly seats to secure official recognition. We certainly want to grow and will seek more seats, but any decision will be taken in a manner that does not disrupt alliance unity,' he said speaking to reporters here. Commenting on recent remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the English language, he criticised the BJP's stance as regressive. 'It is bilingual education and English that have enabled Tamils to find employment across the world. The BJP insists on a third language in schools, yet questions the role of English — this contradiction is unconvincing,' he said.

Railways clears decks for three RoBs, two subways in Trichy: MP

Trichy: Southern Railway is exploring the construction of three new road overbridges (RoBs) and two subways to ease traffic congestion in densely populated areas near railway tracks in and around Trichy, MP Durai Vaiko said on Friday. After reviewing the proposals with officials from the Trichy railway division, the MP also confirmed that the Maris RoB is expected to be commissioned by June 2026. He visited several proposed sites, including Devathanam near Town railway station, Mela Kumaresapuram near BHEL, Mela Kalkandarkottai, and Manjathidal near Thiruverumbur. "Work for a new RoB near Town railway station is being expedited. Instead of constructing a subway for the new RoB, the railways were suggested to provide a subway for another level crossing near Town railway station to allow vehicles to reach Sanjeevi Nagar. A drain managed by the Trichy corporation runs nearby; there is feasibility for a new subway," the MP told reporters. The MP added that railway authorities are optimistic about developing a new RoB in Mela Kumaresapuram to help villagers access the BHEL Trichy complex. However, the support of the water resources and rural development departments is vital for the plan. He further noted that another new RoB is proposed at Mela Kalkandarkottai and a subway with modified specifications at Manjathidal, near the upcoming MEMU shed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "The new subway will be both taller and wider than the one proposed earlier, enabling vehicles, including small cars, to access the residential areas. Work will be completed before Sept," the MP added. Later, he inspected the ongoing reconstruction of the Maris RoB near Fort railway station. "Railways have assured that their scope of work will be completed by Jan 2026. Trichy corporation will then take over the remaining work to link the approach roads," Durai Vaiko said. Earlier, he inspected the Ponmalai railway workshop, where a dedicated maintenance facility for Vande Bharat trains is proposed at a cost of 300 crore. New RoBs: 1.
