Kevin McCloud admits major Grand Designs change that even die-hard fans missed

Daily Mirror23-04-2025

A new series of the beloved property show is now airing on Channel 4
Grand Designs' latest series is now well underway, spotlighting more radical self-build projects and revisits to some previously featured homes.
The Channel 4 show celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, with the anniversary special episodes attracting two million viewers. It resulted in two more seasons being announced for 2025, with the second expected in the autumn.

Meanwhile series 23 is currently being shown on Channel 4, featuring a floating home built using never-before-tested technology, as well as a pensioner with plans to create a mirror image of the beloved home that her mobility issues are forcing her out of.
Long-time fans of the show might have noticed quite a significant change that has been made to the programme that is especially apparent in recent episodes, though it appears to have passed many people by.
Presenter Kevin McCloud, who has fronted the show since its first episode in 1999, explained the huge change that has been made behind-the-scenes.
Speaking to the Mirror's Screen Time team, he shared that they now use a cutting edge camera that allows the team to capture some truly impressive shots. The change first came in during filming of last year's autumn series.
"We started using the same camera that they're using [in Netflix's Adolescence]. The reason is because it's got a Gimbal, rather like a Steadicam, which was invented for Stanley Kubrick for The Shining... and it allows you to walk down a corridor and instead of the camera bouncing it gives a beautiful smooth [shot]," Kevin shared.

"It means we can push into a building really slowly and navigate round the building cleanly without worrying about whether we're going to see tracks on the floor."
He continued: "It's an amazing camera so we're using it quite a bit, pretty well on every location day. We call it the chicken because as you step it does this [gestures] and it's like a chicken walking."

Fans of the series are marking their calendars for the latest Grand Designs Live event spanning May 2 to May 5. The exhibition sees live talks from previous contributors to the Channel 4 series, as well as advice for those planning their own big build.
This year Kevin will host an event first, with the launch of the 'Flatpack Olympics'. The event will pit people proud of their DIY skills against each other as they attempt to build everyday furniture in record time.
Kevin McCloud was speaking ahead of Grand Designs Live at London ExCeL, the UK's premier home and design exhibition, taking place from 2-5 May.

All six episodes of 'irresistibly creepy' crime drama available to stream now

Looking to escape the heat? Well, why not watch a new supernatural crime drama that's sure to send a chill down your spine? As of today (June 28), all six episodes of The Shadow are available to stream on Channel 4. This haunting crime drama follows a young journalist called Norah (Deleila Piasko) on assignment in Vienna. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, things take a sinister turn when a strange beggar warns Norah that she will kill a man sometime in the future. Not feeling particularly homicidal, the young writer ignores the warning, that is, until strange things start occurring. Can Norah avoid her murderous fate? Well, you'll have to watch to find out. First released in Germany back in 2023, the series is an adaptation of Melanie Raabe's internationally bestselling 2020 novel of the same name, which was branded 'irresistibly creepy' by Open Books. The TV series has similarly glowing reviews. In their 10/10 IMDb review one user described the show as 'a meticulously crafted psychological thriller, distinguished by its atmospheric storytelling and compelling performances.' Meanwhile, another user gave the series 9/10 and said The Shadow was a 'testament to the potential of television as a medium for nuanced, character-driven narratives.' High praise indeed! However, that's not the only accolade the show has earned; it won the Audience Choice Award at the German Seriencamp Festival in 2023, and Kino magazine gave it 4.5 stars. More Trending Meanwhile, DWDL's critic Timo Niemeier wrote in his review, 'the creators went to great lengths in the first five episodes to keep viewers guessing as long as possible about what actually happened, the story is resolved almost perfectly at the end.' If, however, The Shadows sounds a bit spooky for you, or if you like the heat, there are other streaming options available this weekend. Season 4 of The Bear has just dropped on Disney Plus. Season four has been called a return to form by critics, and it's currently sitting at a respectable 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own valiant TV Editor Sabrina Barr reviewed The Bear season 4 for Metro, and in her three-and-a-half-star review, she wrote that while she enjoyed this fourth outing, she was 'left wanting more'. Millie Bobby Brown oozes confidence in bikini after slamming 'bullies'

Actress Millie Bobby Brown rose to fame as Eleven in Netflix series Stranger Things, going on to star in Enola Holmes - she's also created her own beauty brand and is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Actress Millie Bobby Brown stunned in a series of bikini shots, after the 21-year-old was forced to hit back over cruel trolls who picked apart her appearance. Millie looked incredible as she posed for her golden-hour shots while sunning herself on the sand. The Stranger Things star, who married Jake Biongiovi in a private ceremony in May 2024, wore a green and blue paisley print two-piece as she posed in front of the ocean. She posted the three photos on Instagram, with some beach-related emojis. ‌ The comments section was filled with adoring praise from friends and fans. Her beauty brand's account wrote: "An absolute icon," while reality star and socialite Paris Hilton replied with a heart-eye emoji. ‌ Millie has been subjected to intense and cruel scrutiny over her looks on social media, despite her young age and always looking ten out of ten. The young star shared a moving Instagram post earlier this year, after she was cruelly judged for how grown up she appears. In an almost three-minute-long video, the actress reflected on her career and the difficulties of growing up in the spotlight. She called out various articles written by journalists who had criticised her body and face, drawing attention to the unrealistic expectations placed on women in the entertainment industry. In the clip, posted in March, Millie sat makeup-free as she said: 'I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me, something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny.' Later, she read out article titles which had questioned her looks, including one mentioning the comedian. Millie sadly said: 'Little Britain's Matt Lucas takes savage swipe at Millie Bobby Brown's new 'mommy makeover' look, written by Bethan Edwards, amplifying an insult rather than questioning why a grown man is mocking a young woman's appearance. This isn't journalism. This is bullying.' ‌ After sharing more about the criticism she was facing, Enola Holmes star Millie concluded: 'Let's do better. Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing.' Matt responded to Millie just four hours later, explaining his meaning and apologising for causing offence. On Instagram, he wrote: 'Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context. ‌ "Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain. There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and wore a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases. "I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I 'slammed' you, firstly because that's not my style, and secondly because I think you're brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologise. Matt.'

Selling Sunset's Chrishell Stause slams Golden Bachelor Mel Owens over comments

Chrishell Stause took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the upcoming season of The Golden Bachelor, after the show's leading man Mel Owens shared his dating preferences Selling Sunset's Chrishell Stause has hit back at the Golden Bachelor after he expressed a preference for women under 60 without 'artificial hips.' The 43 year old reality star didn't hold back in expressing her thoughts on 66 year old Mel Owens' criteria for his ideal woman. 'We love the Golden Bachelor because of how wholesome it is,' the Selling Sunset star penned in her Instagram Stories on Thursday, adding, 'This type of energy will ruin it.' ‌ The drama unfolded when Owens, a former NFL player, discussed the casting process for the women who would compete for his heart on the MGoBlue podcast released on June 4. ‌ In a tale recounted on the episode, the ex-linebacker shared the story that ruffled Stause's feathers. During a meeting with The Bachelor producers, Owens disclosed: 'They ask me, 'What's your preference?' So I just said [ages] 45 to 60, just being honest,' he admitted. However, while dining with the show's executive producer, he reconsidered and stated, 'You know, if they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them.' When reminded of the show's title, The Golden Bachelor, Owens recalled being told, ''You can't use the word cut.' 'I go, 'Well, that's an NFL term,'' he responded. He then outlined his additional expectations for the women. 'Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right?' Stause isn't the only one voicing her disapproval. A multitude of franchise fans have expressed their strong opinions on his comments. ‌ 'Based on his podcast interview I won't be watching or supporting. We need to stop supporting men who think they're so great that they won't date women their own age. This bloke needs to go back home,' one fan penned. Another said: 'I'm done with this franchise if you move forward with him. Have some respect for women.' A third commented: ''This is so sad. I can't believe TPTB knew this man didn't want a golden lady and cast him anyway. So misogynistic to say no wigs or women over 60. Please replace him for someone who appreciates women of a certain age, which is the entire point of this show.' Chrishell is known for her role on Netflix's Selling Sunset and her cast mate Nicole Young has just finished filming the latest series of the Netflix hit - and she spilled a number of filming secrets to the Mirror including her feud with Chrishell. ‌ Nicole, 39, first appeared on the reality series in 2022, joining in season six. Since then, fans have watched as she has sold some of the hottest properties in California. But it's been her ongoing feud with fellow realtor Chrishell Stause that has had viewers invested. Now, in an exclusive chat with the Mirror, Nicole has spilled the tea on what goes on behind the scenes and explained her view of what happened between her and her co-star. Nicole claimed the cast have "zero control" over what they film, or who they film with. She told us: "We have zero control over what we film, who we film with, or what topics of discussion are 'needed' by production for each filmed scene. ‌ "Unfortunately, we are held accountable by the public for what is and isn't filmed or shown, but that has never been something we have any control over." Opening up on the on-screen drama with Chrishell, she went on to claim: "Chrishell is incredibly astute at manipulating people and representing herself as a perpetual victim while being a snarling wolf in real life. "The most current feud between her and I that plays out in season 9 is a result of me finally snapping back to her constant and continual jabs and baseless accusations while holding up a mirror to the deep-rooted real source of her issues."
