PM Modi leads nation in paying tribute to legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh
Fauja Singh, who was 114 years old, died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing a road at his native Beas village in Jalandhar district on Monday afternoon.
Modi posted on X that Fauja Singh was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. 'Fauja Singh ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on the very important topic of fitness. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.'
In a condolence message on X, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann said: 'The world's oldest runner, Fauja Singh, who brought glory to the Sikh community all over the world through his long runs, will always live in our hearts and memories. Heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones.'
Former Delhi CM and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal also paid tributes, saying: 'The world has lost a great hero of the sports arena, but he will live forever in history and in our hearts. His passion at an advanced age will remain an inspiration for generations to come.'
In his tribute, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted on X: 'I am deeply saddened by the passing of centenarian marathon legend, the globally celebrated Turbaned Tornado, Fauja Singh ji. His life, a testament to unwavering determination and unbridled resilience, serves as a profound inspiration for fitness enthusiasts, aspiring athletes and the young and old alike. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and admirers.'

The Punjab assembly paid tributes to veteran marathon runner Fauja Singh on the concluding day of the special session of the Punjab assembly. Parliamentary affairs minister Ravjot Singh moved the proposal to pay tributes to him. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan expressed grief and recalled the veteran runner's achievements, saying he inspired people with his indomitable spirit.
Last rites after children arrive from UK, Canada
His Jalandhar-based son, Harvinder Singh, said the family was awaiting the arrival of Fauja Singh's children from the UK and Canada for the last rites. He said he had never imagined that his father would meet his end in an unfortunate road accident. 'He was fit at 114 and used to go for a walk daily. We did try to stop him from going near the busy highway for the walk but he convinced us that it was safe. He never missed his routine of going on the evening walk,' Harvinder said.
Fauja Singh suffered head injuries and fractured his ribs in the hit-and-run accident around 3.30pm on Monday. 'Even though he was rushed to a nearby private hospital, his pulse rate fell drastically by Monday evening and the medical team failed to resuscitate him,' he said.
Meanwhile, police are scanning CCTV footage to track the unidentified vehicle that hit Fauja Singh.
Popularly known as 'Turbaned Tornado' and 'Sikh Superman', the record holder marathon runner, who was the youngest among four siblings, was born on April 1, 1911, at Beas village. At the age of 81, Fauja Singh, a vegetarian throughout his life, moved to East London in 1992 after the death of his wife, Gian Kaur. He took to running after the death of his fifth son, Kuldeep Singh, in August 1994 to overcome the grief. He often said that running is the best exercise to deal with emotional pain resulting from personal losses.
Fauja Singh stunned the world by shattering several records as a marathon runner in multiple age brackets. Since making his debut at the London Marathon in 2000 at the age of 89, Singh completed it six more times and also finished marathons in Toronto and New York besides other cities.

Anti-sacrilege bill will deter future desecration of scriptures: Punjab CM
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said the Anti-sacrilege Bill will ensure that no such heinous crime takes place in the future by making provision of the sternest punishment against culprits. Mann stated this while participating in a debate on the 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill 2025' on the concluding day of the Special Session of the Punjab Assembly here. The House on Tuesday decided to refer the Bill, which was introduced on Monday, to a Select Committee of the Assembly for seeking views of all stakeholders. Mann said the Guru Granth Sahib is the living Guru, who is highly revered by one and all across the globe. He said the 'Guru Granth Sahib' is a lighthouse of peace and tranquility for the entire mankind, and the Punjab government is "fully alive" to the deep emotional hurt caused by the incidents of sacrilege against the holy 'granths' in the past. He said it is unfortunate that some forces had even gone to an extent of committing the most heinous sin against mankind through desecration of the 'Guru Granth Sahib', a holy book revered by the Sikh community. Mann said the 'Guru Granth Sahib' is an eternal Guru for mankind and no one could ever tolerate the dastardly act of sacrilege. Likewise, he said the 'Bhagavad Gita', 'Quran', 'Bible' and other 'granths' are also respected by humanity for showing a way of life to them. Mann said every devout Sikh is deeply connected with the 'Shabad Guru' - in the form of the 'Guru Granth Sahib' and Gurmukhi, which means originating from the mouth of Guru. Mann said the sacrilege incidents had bruised the psyche of every Punjabi in general and every Sikh in particular. In the absence of harsh punishment against this "unpardonable crime", there was no end to these incidents due to which the Bill was necessitated, he said. According to the Bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Those attempting to commit the offence may be sentenced to three to five years and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend up to Rs 3 lakh, as per the Bill. Individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof.

Society must strengthen the voices led by Gandhi to ensure social justice and equity, he said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting. 'Let us remind the country that Ahinda is not a vote bank. It is the voice of India's conscience,' he said, referring to the acronym that stands for minorities, OBCs and Dalits. Ahinda, he added, was an empowerment model which is not only relevant, but is also essential. 'India can never be a true democracy unless the majority who come from OBC, SC, ST and minority communities, that is the AHINDA communities, are not only counted, but also heard.' Karnataka model, Siddaramaiah said, was principled in its commitment to Social Justice and Equity. 'It is rooted in fraternity. It is based on data and scientific surveys. And it is now ready for a national-level adoption.' The CM said his government was committed to delivering justice after completion of the second socio, economic and educational survey that was underway. The state Cabinet had, last month, decided to conduct a fresh state-wide socio-economic survey and complete it in 90 days as desired by the Congress leadership.'For the first time since 1931, we had data on caste and deprivation. But BJP did not make use of the data effectively for the welfare of the Backward Classes,' the CM said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting in attacked the BJP and Sangh Parivar saying they polarised India through caste division, while the Congress worked to win back through social unity and constitutional justice.

Govt to table 8 new Bills in monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21
For the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on July 21, the government has listed eight new Bills, including the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions), Taxation Laws (Amendment), and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bills. The session is also set to see the Opposition INDIA bloc parties demand that the government brief Parliament on Operation Sindoor and India's foreign policy, especially with China. They may also seek information on the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he used trade as a bargaining chip to persuade India and Pakistan to end their military conflict. On Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The Opposition wants a productive Rajya Sabha session from July 21. For that to happen, a number of strategic, political, foreign policy and socio-economic issues that are of great public concern need to be debated and discussed," Kharge said in a post on X after the meeting. The government's 'tentative' list of business for the monsoon session, released by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats late Monday evening, does not mention a Bill to amend the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) of 2016. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is currently studying the IBC to recommend to the government ways to make it more robust. In its three meetings on the subject, 'review of working IBC and emerging issues', the panel has tried to understand the perspectives of banks. At its meeting slated for July 29, it will meet representatives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The government is also set to introduce the Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance), National Sports Governance Bill, and National Anti- Doping (Amendment) Bills. According to the government's list of business, the Mines and Minerals Bill will seek to provide for viable recovery of associated critical minerals, inclusion of contiguous area in a lease for optimal and scientific mining of deep-seated minerals and widening the scope of National Mineral Exploration Trust. The Jan Vishwas Bill seeks to foster ease of doing business and to promote ease of living. The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill seeks to include IIM Guwahati in the Schedule of the Act. The Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill seeks to provide for the declaration, preservation, protection and maintenance of geoheritage sites and geo-relics of national importance for geological studies. The National Sports Governance Bill aims to establish institutional capacity and standards for the governance of sports federations. It would also help establish measures for the resolution of sports grievances and sports disputes. In addition to these Bills, Parliament will also consider some of the pending Bills, including the Income-tax Bill, which was referred to a select committee during the Budget session for further scrutiny. The government will also seek Parliament approval for having extended the President's Rule in Manipur.
