Apple watchOS 26 Put to the Test: Is Workout Buddy a Game Changer?

Geeky Gadgets4 days ago
Apple's WatchOS 26, currently available in public beta, introduces a range of updates designed to enhance both fitness tracking and productivity. Among its most notable additions is the AI-powered Workout Buddy, which aims to provide real-time feedback and motivational support during workouts. Complementing this feature are a redesigned workout interface, a visually refined liquid glass UI, and incremental improvements across the system. While these updates showcase Apple's commitment to innovation, they also reveal areas where the platform could benefit from further refinement. The video below from DC Rainmaker gives us a detailed look at the new Fitness features in Apple's watchOS 26.

The AI-powered Workout Buddy stands out as the flagship feature of WatchOS 26. Using artificial intelligence, this tool analyzes your performance metrics to deliver tailored feedback and motivational prompts. Whether you're aiming to improve your endurance, strength, or overall fitness, Workout Buddy adapts to your goals, offering a personalized coaching experience. Users can even customize the voice feedback to suit their preferences, adding a layer of personalization to their workouts.
However, the feature comes with certain limitations. Workout Buddy requires constant internet connectivity, an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and headphones to function optimally. Its reliance on cloud-based AI processing introduces potential issues, such as occasional inaccuracies in activity tracking or fabricated metrics, often referred to as 'AI hallucinations.' These inaccuracies can be particularly frustrating for users who rely on precise data for structured training. Additionally, the dependency on connectivity makes the feature less practical for outdoor enthusiasts or those in areas with limited internet access. Revamped Workout Interface: Streamlined but Imperfect
The workout interface in WatchOS 26 has been redesigned to improve usability and simplify navigation. Settings are now categorized into four distinct sections: Data metrics and views
Structured workouts and goals
Dynamic music playlists
Voice alerts, including Workout Buddy feedback
This reorganization aims to reduce setup time, allowing users to focus on their exercise routines. The new layout is particularly beneficial for those who frequently adjust their workout parameters, as it consolidates key settings into an intuitive structure.
Despite these improvements, the interface is not without its flaws. Navigating through options can feel cumbersome, especially during high-intensity workouts when quick adjustments are necessary. The lack of a more responsive or gesture-based control system limits the practicality of these changes. While the redesign represents progress, it may require additional refinements to fully meet the diverse needs of Apple Watch users. Liquid Glass UI: Subtle Visual Enhancements
The liquid glass UI introduces subtle aesthetic changes to WatchOS 26, most notably on the pin unlock screen. This design update enhances the visual appeal of the Apple Watch, offering a sleek and modern look. However, the impact of this feature is limited by the small screen size and processing constraints of the device. For most users, the liquid glass UI will likely go unnoticed during daily use, serving more as a minor cosmetic upgrade than a functional improvement. Expanded Productivity Features and System Updates
In addition to fitness-focused updates, WatchOS 26 brings new productivity tools to the Apple Watch. The inclusion of the Notes app allows users to create and sync notes directly from their wrist. This feature is particularly useful for jotting down quick reminders or ideas on the go. However, the app's lack of editing capabilities restricts its utility for more complex tasks, such as organizing detailed lists or revising existing notes.
Other system updates include minor tweaks to notifications and settings, aimed at improving overall convenience. For example, notifications are now more context-aware, providing smarter suggestions based on your activity. While these changes enhance the user experience, they are incremental rather than fantastic, offering small but meaningful improvements to daily interactions with the device. Challenges and Opportunities for Future Development
While WatchOS 26 introduces several promising features, it also highlights key challenges that Apple must address in future updates. The reliance on constant connectivity for features like Workout Buddy limits their usability in offline or remote environments. This is a significant drawback for users who frequently engage in outdoor activities or live in areas with inconsistent internet access. Additionally, the occasional inaccuracies in AI-generated metrics underscore the need for more robust processing capabilities.
One potential solution lies in the development of on-device AI processing. By allowing the Apple Watch to handle AI computations locally, Apple could reduce latency, improve accuracy, and enhance the overall reliability of features like Workout Buddy. This advancement would not only address current limitations but also pave the way for more sophisticated applications of AI in wearable technology. WatchOS 26: Progress with Room for Growth
WatchOS 26 represents a meaningful step forward for the Apple Watch, particularly with the introduction of the AI-powered Workout Buddy and a revamped workout interface. These updates demonstrate Apple's commitment to enhancing the fitness and productivity capabilities of its wearable devices. However, the reliance on connectivity, occasional inaccuracies, and limited offline functionality highlight areas where further development is needed. As Apple continues to refine its wearable technology, future iterations of WatchOS could unlock the full potential of these features, offering a more seamless and reliable user experience.

Palantir shares jump as soaring AI demand powers forecast upgrade

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Palantir Technologies (PLTR.O), opens new tab shares rose 5% before the bell on Tuesday, after strong demand for its AI-powered services across governments and commercial businesses prompted an increase in its annual revenue forecast. Investors have been betting big on the data analytics and defense software company's military-grade artificial intelligence tools and services, which have propelled its shares to more than double in value this year, making them the best performer on the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab index through last close. "Palantir's staggering growth is showing no signs of slowing... and (its) ability to grow at scale has been underestimated by a large cohort of the market," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. The company raised its annual revenue forecast for the second time this year and above Wall Street estimates. Sales to the U.S. government jumped 53% to $426 million, representing more than 42% of the total second-quarter revenue of about $1 billion. Last week, the U.S. Army said it might spend up to $10 billion on Palantir's services over the next decade. The Denver, Colorado-based company, co-founded by Peter Thiel, expects expenses to rise significantly in the third quarter due to seasonal hiring amid rising competition among industry leading tech firms to poach top talent, as businesses rapidly look to adopt AI. The stock trades at over 200 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, compared with AI giant Nvidia's (NVDA.O), opens new tab 34.81 and S&P 500's 27.44. Jefferies analysts cautioned that there is a "disconnect between valuation and achievable growth". At least six brokerages raised their price targets on the stock after the results.

How to Build the Ultimate Apple Ecosystem: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating an Apple ecosystem on a medium budget requires a thoughtful approach to balance cost, functionality, and practicality. By carefully selecting devices and accessories, you can build a seamless, interconnected setup that meets your needs without overspending. The video below from Better Creating provides actionable recommendations to help you make informed decisions and create a cohesive Apple ecosystem tailored to your requirements. Watch this video on YouTube. Choosing the Right iPhone The iPhone is the cornerstone of the Apple ecosystem, offering robust performance and effortless integration with other Apple devices. For most users, the iPhone 16 base model strikes an excellent balance between price and functionality. Its processing power and camera capabilities are more than sufficient for everyday tasks such as communication, photography, and app usage. If you require additional storage for photos, videos, or apps, upgrading to a higher-capacity model is a practical choice. However, avoid opting for the Pro version unless you need advanced features like telephoto lenses or ProRAW photography. These features are typically only necessary for professional content creators or users with highly specific needs. MacBook Options for Different Needs Your choice of MacBook should align with your computing requirements and budget. Apple offers a range of options that cater to different use cases, making sure that you can find a device that fits your needs: Basic Tasks: For activities like web browsing, document editing, and media consumption, the M1 MacBook Pro remains a cost-effective and reliable option. Amazon shoppers blown away by 'military-grade' £59 smartwatch with 'cool features'

Shoppers praised the device as being 'excellent value for money' Amazon shoppers have been raving about a "stylish and expensive" smartwatch that is also incredibly "durable." People were quick to praise the device, which is on sale for less than £100, making it ideal for people wanting an affordable option other than Apple or Samsung. The Dreamac Military Smartwatch is available for £59.99 on Amazon, considerably less than leading brands like Apple, Fitbit and Garmin often charge. Amazon says the device is made to "military-grade" standards and can "effectively cope with all kinds of harsh environments" as well as daily life, from working, playing, exploring, or travelling. The waterproof smartwatch is made from a wear-resistant material to provide effective protection from various elements, including shock, temperature, pressure, liquid, sand, dust, water and impact. Beyond "looking good", it also earns its 'smart' status thanks to a range of different features. With the built-in speakers and microphone, Amazon says it is easy to make and receive smartwatch calls. The device also gives on-the-wrist notifications from various social media apps, text messages, and emails that come from your mobile phone. It also acts as a fitness tracker, with over 120 different sport programmes to log and record your workouts. During the day, it can count steps and calories burned in real time, and at night, it can chart your sleep quality for "all-around health monitoring". Amazon also claims that the device has incredible battery life, meaning it needs less time to charge. The online seller claims that it may last "longer than a traditional smartwatch" and suggests that the power may last up to a week with general day-to-day use from one charge. Similar devices are on the market for people wanting an affordable way into the smartwatch world without spending hundreds of pounds. For example, Sports Direct is offering this Karrimor Smart Watch (£19.99, down from £49.99) and the Reflex Active Series 23 Smart Watch from Currys (£39.99), but hundreds preferred this Amazon deal. In the reviews, one shopper said: "Extremely happy with this watch, it looks great and has excellent functions. It's excellent value for money and has really good build quality. Easy to charge and very comfortable to wear." Another added: "Looks stylish and expensive. Given the cost against Apple or Samsung, this is brilliant. I bought one for my partner, and after watching him set up, I've just ordered myself one." A third wrote: "The battery life is outstanding—I've gone weeks without needing a recharge. Plus, the call feature is super handy when I'm on the go." Someone else added: "I didn't take it off when working, it got dirty, sweat on, banged around, slipped under dirty work gloves... And it came through all of that without any damage to speak of. It didn't even scratch the band, much less the screen." Some did report a few minor issue though, such as the 'always on screen' being "bothersome to wear to bed because it lights up every time it's moved - like when rolling over in your sleep". Another posted a photo and claimed: "Glass already scratched just from normal use". However, the overall impression of this smartwatch was glowing. Another five-star shopper said: "This is my first venture into the world of smart watches but this thing is really amazing for what it's capable of." And, one more added: "The battery lasts a super long time (about a week for my use) and the watch is waterproof, so no worries in the shower or in the pool. This is an excellent smartwatch, which I recommend not only for design but also for performance."
