GMA Network4 days ago
Jollibee's Chickenjoy was hailed as the No. 1 "Best Fast Food Fried Chicken" in the United States for 2025, marking its second consecutive win.
The Filipino favorite beat out major American brands, including Popeyes, KFC, and Chick-fil-A. The rankings were determined by a panel of USA Today editors, food experts, and public voting.
"Jollibee is the largest and fastest-growing Asian restaurant company in the world. They're best known for Chickenjoy, the signature juicy, flavorful fried chicken. Order it in buckets or accompanied by sides — and don't forget to dip it in their silky gravy," said USA Today 10Best.
Trailing Jollibee on the list were Pollo Campero from Guatemala and Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken from Ohio.
Jollibee USA also celebrated the win on Facebook, thanking fans and supporters.
"WE LOVE YOU JOLLIBEE FAMILY!!! Thank you to USA TODAY 10Best and all our fans for naming us the #1 Fast Food Fried Chicken two years in a row!!!" it said.
This isn't the first time Jollibee's Chickenjoy has received top recognition in the US. In 2024, it also topped USA Today's list, and in 2022, it was hailed as the "Best Fried Chicken in America" by global food site Eater.com. — Hermes Joy Tunac/LA, GMA Integrated News

NBA star Ja Morant lights up BGC court in first Manila visit

Be it in Memphis or in Manila, Ja Morant made sure to turn every court into his own playground. The Grizzlies guard did just that in his rare Manila visit as part of his 'Make Then Watch' tour, which is aligned in his effort to connect and interact with local basketball stars. The 25-year-old high-flying guard made a huge entrance before obliging to the fans to hit the 'griddy' dance moves. Morant also watched from the sidelines as Team Barangay and Team La Salle went at it in a four-quarter exhibition game. Team La Salle is composed of alumni Jeron Teng, Ricci Rivero, and Marga Jimenez, while Team Barangay are spearheaded by other Pinoy stars Rhenz Abando, CJ Cansino, Jack Animam, and Andrei Ugaddan. Abando and Ugaddan threw a number of slams with the former NCAA Rookie MVP even getting a high-five from the NBA star. But Morant did not leave without making one of his own, completing an alleyoop dunk off a pass from a member of his camp. Hyped by the crowd, Morant then knocked down another two-handed hammer to close out the friendly game. Before dropping by the Philippines, Morant also made stops in other Asian countries China and Japan. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

A reimagined 'A portrait of the artist as Filipino' by Nick Joaquin to be staged this August

This August, the iconic Filipino stage classic "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino" returns to the spotlight, not as a revival, but as a powerful reinvention. Entitled Quomodo Desolata Es? Isang Dalamhati, this fresh Filipino adaptation of Nick Joaquin's seminal 1955 play will be staged at the Hyundai Hall of Areté, Ateneo de Manila University. The adaptation and translation is helmed by acclaimed playwrights Jerry Respeto and Guelan Varela-Luarca, with Varela-Luarca also directing the production. The title, "Quomodo Desolata Es?" — or Latin for 'How desolate she has become?' — sets the tone for what the creators describe as a lamentation that flows between past and present, between literature and patriotism. The play reflects on cultural decay, generational duty, and the enduring struggle to preserve identity in a changing nation. Originally staged by the Barangay Theater Guild in 1955 at Aurora Gardens in Intramuros, "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino" has long been celebrated for its introspective portrayal of two sisters caught in the crosscurrents of art, family, and society on the brink of war. This 2025 adaptation doesn't just seek to preserve Joaquin's intent, but to reinvigorate it with contemporary urgency, exploring questions of heritage, longing, and national grief through a more confrontational and poetic lens. "'Quomodo Desolata Es?' is a question of longing, uncertainty, and despair, answered through an elegy filled with dignity, conviction, and love for the nation and the art form," said the production team. The ensemble cast features some of the most respected and dynamic talents in Philippine theater today, including: Gab Pangilinan Delphine Buencamino Omar Uddin Brian Sy Vino Mabalot Maita Ponce Mika Regis Meyanne Plamenio-Cortezano Jason Sanchez Roldine Ebrada Jethro Tenorio Rafael Jimenez JJ Ignacio Chantei Cortez Performance Dates: August 8, 14, 15 – 7:30 PM August 9, 10, 16, 17 – 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM Venue: Hyundai Hall, Soledad V. Theater Calendar: 4 must-see shows to catch this August 2025

This August, Philippine theater comes alive with stories that challenge, enchant, and ignite the imagination. From sold-out musicals to radical revivals, the stage offers something for every kind of theatergoer, whether you're craving fantasy, heartache, spectacle, or satire. Without a doubt, it's a month that celebrates both world-class imports and fearless Filipino works, each bringing a distinct voice and vision to the spotlight. Here's your guide to what's opening this month, numbered by start date: 1. Side Show: The Musical Runs: Now showing until August 17 Venue: Spotlight Black Box Theater, Circuit Makati Based on the true story of conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, "Side Show" explores the pain, wonder, and humanity behind the spectacle of 'freak shows.' Once displayed in circus tents, the Hilton sisters rise to vaudeville fame while navigating love, betrayal, and their deep longing for independence and normalcy. The musical features alternating casts—Tanya Manalang and Marynor Madamesila, and Molly Langley and Krystal Kane—as the twins, supported by a powerhouse ensemble including Bibo Reyes, David Ezra, and Gab Pangilinan. Directed by Steven Conde, the production by The Sandbox Collective shines with powerful vocals, stirring choreography, and a haunting score. More than a musical about identity, "Side Show" dares audiences to reflect on society's obsession with difference, and the price of being seen only for what makes us 'other.' 2. Into the Woods Runs: August 7 to 24 Venue: Samsung Performing Arts Theater, Circuit Makati Stephen Sondheim's beloved musical makes its much anticipated Manila return in a lavish staging by GMG Productions. With a dream cast featuring Lea Salonga as the Witch, Eugene Domingo as Jack's Mother, and Arielle Jacobs (Broadway's Aladdin) as Cinderella, "Into the Woods" promises a thrilling mix of nostalgia, wit, and emotional depth. The show intertwines multiple Brothers Grimm fairy tales—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel—and follows what happens after the 'happily ever after.' It's a darker, wiser look at human desire, consequence, and connection, filled with Sondheim's signature lyrical genius and layered harmonies. For local theater fans, this is a rare opportunity to see a fully staged, Broadway-caliber version of one of the most influential musicals of all time—led by some of the country's most celebrated performers. According to GMG Productions, it's their fastest-selling title to date. If you missed out this time, fingers crossed for an extension or return run in the future. 3. Alice in Wonderland Runs: August 24 – September 21 Venue: REP Theater, Eastwood Mall Repertory Philippines is inviting families down the rabbit hole this August with its colorful, kid-friendly adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland." Featuring live music, dynamic choreography, and immersive sets, the show is a whimsical reimagining of Lewis Carroll's classic—perfect for young audiences and the young at heart. Directed by Cara Barredo, the play puts a playful spotlight on curiosity and courage, while offering a visual feast that includes larger-than-life costumes, fantastical characters, and interactive staging. It's also part of REP's Theater for Young Audiences series, which aims to foster love for theater among children through engaging and accessible storytelling. Whether you're attending with kids or just looking to revisit a childhood favorite, Alice in Wonderland offers a joyful escape into fantasy and imagination. 4. Walang Aray Runs: August 29 – October 12 Venue: PETA Theater Center, Quezon City After sold-out runs and rave reviews, PETA's "Walang Aray" returns with a fiercer and funnier revival that reclaims Filipino love, history, and resistance. A contemporary spin on Severino Reyes' zarzuela "Walang Sugat," the production mixes irreverent comedy, biting satire, and pop culture flair to tell the story of lovers caught in the crossfire of colonial repression. Directed by Ian Segarra with new artistic director J-mee Katanyag, this third run features refreshed staging, queer-inclusive casting, and new musical arrangements that deepen the show's themes. Still at its core is the timeless question: How do we continue to love, laugh, and fight amid wounds—both past and present? Backed by an ensemble cast and a live band, "Walang Aray" has become a modern protest musical that speaks to today's youth, tackling identity, resistance, and romance with wit and radical joy. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
