DK, Udupi admins take precautions ahead of Bakrid
Deputy commissioners Anandh K of Dakshina Kannada and Vidya Kumari K of Udupi instructed police to form teams and set up checkposts to prevent illegal transportation of cattle.
The DK DC directed the Mangaluru City police to form teams in the city and outskirts. People may contact 112 if they come across any illegal activities, the DC said, and directed the police department to ensure the secrecy of the informers. Officials informed that checkposts have been opened at all district and state borders in Dakshina Kannada.
Meanwhile, meetings involving religious leaders are being conducted in each police station in the district.
Directions have been given to police stations to warn individuals who are likely to create disturbances during the festival. Additional police force will be deputed to sensitive areas, officials said.
The meeting resolved to invoke provisions under the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance 2020 to attach properties, if illegal cattle slaughter is reported, those who transport cattle illegally and slaughter them will be sentenced to 3–10 years of jail or a penalty to the tune of Rs 10 lakh under the law.
City Police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K were present.
Udupi DC Vidya Kumari held a meeting and directed district and taluk-level committees to actively work to prevent the unauthorised slaughter and transportation of cattle. "Since there is a possibility of illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle, buffaloes, calves, and camels during the Bakrid festival, inspection teams comprising various officials have been formed across the district to prevent it.
The appointed officials should coordinate with each other and actively work within their jurisdiction.
The teams formed at the taluk level should meet, discuss control measures, and take action," she said, adding that the Bakrid festival should be conducted peacefully and harmoniously. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that checkposts will operate 24 hours a day, throughout the district.

New auto fare rates in Bengaluru from tomorrow, govt sets October 31 deadline to update meters
The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Thursday issued a directive mandating all autorickshaws operating in Bengaluru to update their fare meters with the newly revised rates by October 31. The new rates will be applicable from August 1. According to the new rates, the minimum fare for the first two kilometres has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 36. For every subsequent kilometre, passengers will now have to pay Rs 18, up from the earlier Rs 15. The night fare – applicable between 10 pm and 5 am – will be charged at 1.5 times the regular rate. Waiting charges, too, have been revised, with the first five minutes remaining free. Beyond that, a fee of Rs 10 will be charged for every 15 minutes of waiting. In terms of baggage, up to 20 kg is allowed free of cost. An additional Rs 10 will be charged for every 20 kg or part thereof, with the maximum baggage limit capped at 50 kg. Additionally, Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner, Bengaluru (Traffic), also issued a directive on Wednesday, directing all traffic police officials to book cases against errant auto drivers who charge exorbitant fares in violation of the government-fixed rates. The RTA order would also mean that aggregator apps like Rapido, Namma Yatri, Uber, and Ola are also set to embrace the new fare structure. As per the Karnataka High Court's October 2022 order, app-based auto aggregators are allowed to charge only 10 per cent above the government-notified fare, plus 5 per cent goods and services tax. The RTA has instructed that auto rickshaw meters must be recalibrated to reflect the revised fares and certified by the Legal Metrology Department within the given timeline. To streamline the process, all Legal Metrology inspectors working within the city –excluding those from the Investigation Wing – have been directed to focus solely on verifying and stamping auto rickshaws in Bengaluru city limits, irrespective of their usual jurisdiction. 'This special arrangement will remain in effect until the October-end deadline. Post October 31, the Legal Metrology Department will revert to its regular jurisdiction-based operations, as per existing norms,' the notification said. This is the first fare revision since November 2021, when the base fare was increased from Rs 25 to Rs 30 and the per-kilometre charge from Rs 13 to Rs 15. Before that, fares were last changed in 2013. The latest revision follows repeated appeals from auto unions, which have cited rising fuel prices, higher maintenance costs, and inflation as reasons why the earlier fares were no longer sustainable. However, many drivers have expressed disappointment with the RTA's decision, saying their demand for a Rs 40 base fare and Rs 20 per kilometre was not met. Michelle Khiangte, a regular auto user, told The Indian Express, 'With the current pricing mechanisms coupled with tipping, the auto fares are… very high and unjustified. Now with the new revision, it will pinch my pocket even more. For a Rs 100 journey, I am paying Rs 150. With the new rates I would be shelling out around Rs 170-Rs 180. The bulk of my expenditure is channelled towards commuting, and this has eventually made transport in Bengaluru very costly.' Satya Arikutharam, mobility expert and a regular auto user, said, 'The fare revision for autos was long overdue. That said, hardly any autos were operating the fare meter. Commuters must be vigilant about fares from tomorrow, if not aggregators are likely to increase them even further. The best way to ensure this is for commuters to insist that the drivers operate the fare meter for their trips. The Transport Department must put more monitoring efforts than now to ensure autos operate the fare meter, which is a permit condition, on all their trips. Aggregators must also follow the fare notification as the High Court has upheld the state's right to notify and enforce fares.'

Accused of accepting bribe to ‘let off drug peddlers', Moga inspector declared PO, booked again on court orders
Booked for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to let off two drug peddlers, the Moga Police has registered another FIR against Punjab Police inspector Arshpreet Kaur Grewal after a local court declared her a proclaimed offender. The Moga court of CJM Shilpi Gupta declared the inspector a proclaimed offender in an order dated July 2 and ordered the police to register a fresh FIR against her under the section 209 (fail to appear at the specified time and place after being summoned under a proclamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An officer from Kot Ise Khan police station of Moga confirmed that a fresh FIR against the inspector has been registered on the court order. Grewal, the former SHO of Kot Ise Khan police station, was booked along with two senior constables in October last year under several sections of the NDPS Act and Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) for allegedly accepting Rs 5 lakh bribe to let off two drug peddlers and showing less recovery of opium than what was actually recovered. Since then, the Moga police failed to arrest her in the case as she was absconding. According to the FIR, Grewal and her team had apprehended one Amarjit Singh of Datewala road, and recovered 3-kg opium from him. However, along with Amarjit, his brother Manpreet and son Gurpreet were also present. However, the inspector along with both constables, allegedly struck a deal of Rs 8 lakh via a private person, the FIR claimed. 'After accepting Rs 5 lakh as bribe, the inspector let off Manpreet and Gurpreet and the drug peddling case was registered only against Amarjit Singh,' the FIR further said. The recovery in the case was shown as 2-kg of opium instead of 3 kg.

Puri stampede probe report submitted to CM Majhi
Agency: PTI Bhubaneswar, Jul 31 (PTI) Odisha Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg on Thursday submitted the inquiry report into the June 29 stampede near Sri Gundicha Temple in Puri that claimed three lives and left several others injured during Rath Yatra. The report, submitted to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, comes exactly within the 30-day deadline set for the probe. An official said Garg held different public hearing sessions in Bhubaneswar and Puri before preparing her final report. Apart from the hearing sessions, Garg took note of CCTV footage, video clips, still pictures of the incident, the official said, adding that the development commissioner prepared the report after holding discussions with different stakeholders like the police, administration, servitors, victim families and others. Three persons, including two women, were killed and over 50 others injured in the stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple in Puri during a ceremony related to the Rath Yatra festivities. The incident took place around 4.20 am on June 29 when thousands of devotees had gathered near the chariots parked in front of the temple. The Gundicha Temple, located around 3km from the 12th century shrine, is the aunt's house of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Subhadra and Balabhadra. In the aftermath, the state government initiated a probe to examine crowd management protocols and emergency response measures. Garg was also suggested to make recommendations on how to avoid such incidents in future, an official said. Immediately after the stampede, Majhi announced and ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the next of kin of deceased persons identified as — Basanti Sahu (36) from Bolagarh, and Premakant Mohanty (80) and Pravati Das (42) from Balipatna. The government also removed the Puri collector and the SP and suspended two police officers for dereliction of duty. Though the details of Garg's findings and recommendations are yet be made public, the report will help the government understand the lapses and implement measures for the safety of devotees in future.
