RoRo ferries on Chorao-Ribandar route reduce travel time from 15min to 5 mins

Panaji:
Two RoRo (roll on/roll off) ferries, Gangotri and Dwarka, were launched on the Chorao–Ribandar route on Monday. The ferries will operate on a PPP basis, said chief minister Pramod Sawant during the launch.
'These vessels will cut travel time from 15 minutes to just five minutes,' he said.
'With air-conditioned facilities for pedestrians, zero-emission features, and their capacity to carry an additional 15-16 vehicles compared to regular ferries, most of the commuters waiting to travel will be accommodated aboard the vessel. Ambulances that used to have additional waiting time due to the limitations of the regular ferries will no longer have to suffer,' he said.
Sawant added that more RoRo services will be introduced on other river routes to strengthen waterway transport and promote tourism. 'This RoRo is an epitome of
Make in India
and Made in Goa. We plan to replicate this successful project across the state,' Sawant added.
Sharing his thoughts on the decision to no
tify fares for commuters travelling on this route, Sawant said, 'The ferry services operate on a 100% basis because the rides are free for pedestrians.

When we give the public an upgrade in its facilities, they must contribute by paying the fare. We also have a concessional pass system for those who find the daily fares exorbitant,' Sawant said.
The launch was also attended by MP Shripad Naik and the minister for river navigation, Subhash Phal Dessai.
Naik said that Gangotri and Dwarka are not 'outsider' names. 'Both names are inspired by Indian culture, there is no insider and outsider about this.
Someone who makes an issue about it cannot be considered Indian,' he said.
He was reacting to GPCC president Amit Patkar's claim that these names are non-Indian. Phal Desai said that it was his decision to name them and also said that these are two pure names that are associated with water bodies, which is why they have been named so. 'One need not politicise something like this,' he said.

Not many kanwariyas, cops reopen DME within an hour

Ghaziabad: Traffic cops in the city reopened the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) on Monday, barely an hour after shutting down its entry and exit points. The closure, initially planned to facilitate kanwar pilgrims, particularly 'Dak Kanwariyas ', was lifted after authorities observed minimal pilgrim movement and emerging traffic bottlenecks. It was around 11.30am that the traffic cops blocked all entry and exit points of DME — Khoda, ABES College, Crossings Republik, Dasna, and Bhojpur, deploying two constables at each location. However, the expressway was reopened by 12.30pm after an assessment of the situation. "We observed very few kanwariyas on their vehicles in the DME section, while minor traffic congestion began developing at some entry and exit points. After analysing the situation, we decided to reopen the expressway," said Ziauddin Ahmad, ACP (traffic). "We wanted to ensure a safe passage for 'Dak Kanwariyas', who primarily use the DME while returning from Haridwar. Our priority was to prevent any law and order situation," Ahmad said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 15 Most Beautiful Women in the World Undo The ACP, however, didn't rule out future closures. "We will continue monitoring the presence of pilgrims on the DME. The entry and exit points might be closed again by tonight or Tuesday, with only essential services like ambulances being permitted on the Ghaziabad stretch," he added. The closure, which followed several changes in plans and missed deadlines of July 17 and 19, comes amid expectations of increased pilgrim movement ahead of Shivratri on July 23. Currently, light vehicles from Meerut are being diverted to Ghaziabad via the Hapur route and NH-9, while heavy vehicles, restricted since July 11, are being redirected from Ghazipur to NH-9 up to Dasna and then to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway towards Meerut. The annual kanwar yatra sees pilgrims utilising three main routes through Ghaziabad to reach Haridwar for collecting Ganga water. While traditional pilgrims mainly use the Pipeline Road from Loni Border to Niwari, 'Dak Kanwariyas' prefer the DME. A significant number also travel via NH-34 through GT Road, with these routes collectively covering 150km within Ghaziabad.

Private buses without doors in Coimbatore pose threat to passengers' lives

Coimbatore: It's time for the regional transport offices (RTOs) in Coimbatore to crack their whip against private buses that are yet to install doors at entry and exit points and prevent footboard travel. While most of the private buses are yet to install the doors, govt buses by and large have installed the doors, thereby reducing accidents due to footboard travelling. "When city police officers advised private bus operators to fix underrun protectors, they ignored our advice. They indirectly threatened to strike if forced to comply. We can only impose fines for footboard travel," a senior police officer in Coimbatore city said. "Though I have to squeeze into the bus, I'm relieved from the dangers of footboard travel during peak hours in government buses, thanks to the newly installed doors," said Sudha Chandran, a housekeeping staff member at a private school on Mettupalayam Road. People would dangerously hang onto the last step while buses were in motion, she said. TOI travelled on both TNSTC and private town buses in the city on Monday, speaking with passengers about their experiences. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Jenifer, a Tatabad resident working at a pharmacy at Ukkadam, said she regularly commutes on route 73D. "While doors limit passenger numbers, people either voluntarily exit or choose private buses. The main issue is insufficient buses between 8am and 9am," she explained. Government bus conductor Spensher Raj noted that despite fixed doors, some passengers still attempt to travel on the last step. "They risk injury when doors open or close. I experienced this myself when my fingernails were torn off, requiring two months of medical leave." Bus driver C Vadivel confirmed that doors have eliminated footboard accidents. "This safety measure benefits everyone. Previously, we had to stop mid-route to remove footboard travellers. Private buses, focused on passenger count and daily trips, often ignore passenger limits," he said. As of now, the TNSTC has fixed doors on 552 town buses to prevent footboard travel. It plans to fix doors for the remaining 50 buses soon. A senior transport department official stated that footboard travelling violates regulations, though there's no mandatory requirement for installing doors. "We conduct regular inspections to prevent footboard travel and can increase vigilance. Regarding misconduct complaints, passengers should report incidents for immediate action." The implementation of doors on government buses has significantly improved passenger safety, but challenges remain with private operators. Better enforcement of safety regulations and addressing passenger grievances could further enhance the public transport experience in Coimbatore.
