150 Missiles a Year? India's New BrahMos Hub Is Ready To Fire
Virtually inaugurated by the defence minister, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), an initiative to strengthen indigenous defence production and reduce dependence on imports.
The Lucknow hub joins five other defence nodes in the state tha are located in Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh and Kanpur.
Mass-Production Of Strategic Weapon
The new unit is expected to begin manufacturing 80 to 100 BrahMos missiles annually, with plans to scale up the production to 150 units per year as it transitions to the lighter and next-generation (NG) variants.
These upgraded missiles will enhance deployment flexibility across land, air and naval platforms, offering India greater reach and deterrence in high-stakes military scenarios.
Developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos missile has earned its reputation as a formidable precision-strike weapon.
Capable of flying at speeds up to Mach 2.8 (approximately 3,430 km/h), the missile can engage targets at ranges between 290 and 400 kilometers. Its 'fire-and-forget' capability allows for high-accuracy strikes with minimal operator intervention.
The NG version of the missile marks a technological leap. Weighing just 1,290 kg compared to its predecessor's 2,900 kg, the lighter BrahMos variant allows fighter jets such as the Su-30MKI to carry up to three missiles simultaneously. It will improve sortie effectiveness and operational flexibility.
Designed For Scale And Speed
The Lucknow facility has been built on an 80-hectare plot provided by the Uttar Pradesh government at no cost, with an overall project investment of Rs 300 crore. From groundbreaking in 2021 to full operational status in four years, the unit represents one of India's fastest defence infrastructure turnarounds.
Apart from missile assembly and testing, the facility will host the Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant, formally known as the Strategic Materials Technology Complex, for producing aerospace-grade materials crucial to modern weapons systems.
A separate Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS) facility, whose foundation was also laid during the event, will function as a national testing ground for various defence technologies.
Expansion of Defence Corridor Vision
Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2018 Global Investors' Summit, the UPDIC aims to position India as a major defence exporter while creating local jobs and boosting regional economies.
After Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh is the second Indian state to establish a full-scale defence manufacturing corridor.
With the BrahMos integration unit now operational, India takes a step toward aligning its strategic defence goals with self-reliance. And with production set to ramp up sharply, the missile that can be launched from land, air or sea may soon become a more frequent presence in India's growing arsenal.

Manikrao Kokate announces Krishi Samruddhi Yojana
Nashik: Aiming at the all-round and sustainable development of agriculture, agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate on Tuesday announced the Krishi Samruddhi Yojana for farmers in Maharashtra. Through this scheme, govt will invest Rs 5,000 crore annually over the next five years in strengthening the infrastructure of agriculture. Simultaneously, it will provide subsidies and incentives for farmers engaged in organic farming. "The objective of this scheme is to create infrastructure in the agricultural sector, increase productivity by reducing input costs, diversify crops, strengthen the value chain, and increase farmers' income by promoting climate-friendly and sustainable agriculture. The new scheme will be implemented from 2025-26 on the lines of the Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjeevani Project, which was implemented earlier for agricultural mechanisation and economical use of water," Kokate said. The scheme will prioritise key agricultural investment sectors to promote productivity, sustainability, and income growth. This includes the promotion of climate change-friendly farming methods, such as micro-irrigation, climate-friendly seeds, crop diversification, soil fertility management, low-cost mechanisation, and the creation of a robust value chain. Innovation centres will be established for digital farming, machinery services, agri-weather advisory services, warehousing and transportation systems, as well as technology dissemination. The schemes will be designed and implemented with the aim of increasing farmers' income. A senior officer from the agriculture department said farmers would need an Agristac registration to benefit from the scheme. This scheme will be implemented through the direct benefit transfer system, with priority given to farmers, women groups, farmer producer companies, as well as small, marginal landholders, women farmers, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe farmers, and farmers with disabilities.

Income tax tribunal upholds Rs 199 crore tax demand against Congress
In a setback to Indian National Congress (INC), the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), Delhi Bench, which upheld a tax assessment of over Rs 199 crore for Assessment Year 2018-19. The Tribunal confirmed the disallowance of tax exemption under Section 13A of the Income-tax Act, 1961, citing the party's failure to file its income tax return by the due date and the receipt of cash donations exceeding the prescribed limit. The case originated when the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Central Circle-19, assessed the INC's income at Rs 199 crore, despite the party declaring "Nil" income. This assessment was subsequently upheld by the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals). A key contention was the timing of the INC's tax return. For Assessment Year 2018-19, the due date for filing income tax returns for political parties was initially September 30, 2018, later extended to December 31, 2018. However, the Indian National Congress filed its return on February 2, 2019, which the tax authorities deemed to be beyond the prescribed due date under Section 139(4B) of the Act. Section 13A's second proviso specifically mandates that a political party must furnish its return of income by the due date under Section 139(4B) to avail tax exemption. The second major point of contention was the receipt of cash donations. The Assessing Officer found that the INC had received Rs 14.49 lakh in cash from various persons, with each donation exceeding Rs 2,000. Section 13A(d) of the Act strictly prohibits political parties from receiving donations exceeding Rs 2,000 in cash, mandating transactions through account payee cheque, bank draft, electronic clearing system, or electoral bond. The tax department argued that the party's own balance sheet recorded these as "donations". The INC argued that its return, filed on February 2, 2019, was within the extended time limit available under Section 139(4) of the Act, and that a belated return should not lead to the disallowance of exemption under Section 13A. The party also attempted to differentiate between "voluntary contributions" and "donations," stating that the cash receipts were voluntary contributions and not donations, an argument rejected by the tax authorities. However, the ITAT's order sided with the revenue department, reinforcing the strict compliance required by political parties to claim tax exemptions under Section 13A. The tribunal's decision underlines the importance of adhering to both timely filing requirements and the prescribed modes for receiving donations to qualify for tax exemptions. The appeal of the Indian National Congress was dismissed, confirming the disallowance of the claimed Rs 199.15 crore exemption.
