
Daredevil: Born Again is Marvel's last chance to save its disastrous streaming run
The title Born Again is both an homage to a beloved 1986 Daredevil comic arc and a nod to the fact that this is a revival series. But there's another metatextual meaning here. The past four years have seen Marvel try and fail to replicate its cinematic dominance in the world of streaming; Daredevil: Born Again is the 15th Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series to hit Disney+ since 2021. Marvel will be hoping that the series can itself be a rebirth – that the company's misguided forays into the world of streaming can be transformed, phoenix-like, into something capable of flight. If Daredevil, a tried-and-true formula with a built-in fanbase, can't do it, then I'm not sure anything will.
In the early days of the MCU – that is to say, between the theatrical release of The Incredible Hulk in 2007 and the launch of Disney's proprietary streaming service in 2022 – the TV arm of the MCU was an entirely different beast. It began on traditional broadcast television: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-2020), the sci-fi series co-created by Avengers ' Joss Whedon, ran for seven seasons on AMC, while Agent Carter (2015-16), a period spy series focusing on Hayley Atwell's Captain America character, ran for two. When the TV ecosystem began its pivot to streaming, Disney turned to Netflix to licence another run of shows – Daredevil, Jessica Jones (2015-19), Luke Cage (2016-18), Iron Fist (2017–18), The Punisher (2017-19) plus the The Defenders (2017), which brought together all the series leads into one crossover miniseries.
These series were nominally set in the same world as the Marvel films – with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter even enlisting including some of the MCU's lesser-known film actors as cast members. But they were also conventionally televisual: more modest than the movies in scope and budget. Absent the mass appeal of the theatrical films, these TV shows attracted more of a niche audience of genre fanatics. Avengers might have been an event, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? This was just another night of network television.
Disney, though, had higher ambitions. When the company decided to launch its own streamer, Disney+, in late 2019, it fixed upon a starkly different approach to Marvel's TV slate. By this point, the MCU had distended beyond its wildest ambitions. It was now more than 20 films deep into its theatrical franchise, and more popular than ever. Just as their movies had monopolised the industry, so too, they thought, would their new streaming series. A whole roster of shows were announced, featuring high-profile actors from the movies, bigger, cinematic budgets and production values. And they were going to be released in formidable quantities.
Call it hubris. Call it folly. Call it a simple miscalculation. But – while their initial effort, the inventive and worthwhile WandaVision, proved a hit – the last four years of Marvel's streaming output has been underwhelming to the point of disaster. Series after series has come and gone without lasting impact, save for the attention of comic-book purists: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Secret Invasion, Ms Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and the recent Echo among them.
The fact that some of these series cost more than most blockbuster films (She-Hulk a mind-boggling $225m) and recruited some bona fide A-listers (Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight; Samuel L Jackson in Secret Invasion), made no difference. Critical responses largely ranged from damning to indifferent – a vast soundboard of voices all intoning the word 'meh'. And while each fresh venture brings with it a core of diehards insisting that, no, really, this one is worth your time, they're yet to convince the bulk of the TV-viewing public. Where once Marvel's TV shows were sort of like nerdy younger siblings to the core cinematic franchise, or perhaps a shabby but endearing uncle, now the Disney+ relations descend upon gatherings as a swarm of gauche and ill-adjusted cousins, dressed like spivs and poisonous to the vibe. And, what's more, they won't stop procreating.
It's worth noting too that Marvel's streaming slump has coincided with a drop-off in interest in its cinematic slate, and industry-wide 'superhero fatigue' – even if the garish phenomenon of Deadpool vs Wolverine last year proved there's still gold somewhere in them thar hills. Which brings us back to Daredevil: Born Again.
I don't know if Daredevil: Born Again will live up to expectations, if the pulpy appeal of the Netflix original will have survived the transition to Disney+. There's certainly a chance it could have: Marvel's head of TV Brad Winderbaum has said that Born Again (along with last year's Agatha All Along) represented a conscious pivot towards more thriftily budgeted series – a production model more in line with traditional TV than the blockbuster sprawl of, say, She-Hulk.
But even loyal fans will have their doubts: there's every chance that Born Again will fall into the same pit of forgotten content that's claimed the rest of Marvel's streaming efforts. Crucially, though, they're going to tune in and find out. If the MCU is striving to be born again, to wash away its sins, there may never be a better chance. Can I get a 'hallelujah'?

George Lucas makes Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
SAN DIEGO, July 27 (Reuters) - Excited fans waved glowing "Star Wars" lightsabers on Sunday at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for George Lucas' latest project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Along with Lucas, the panel included director Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, vice president of Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab Lucasfilm, with Queen Latifah moderating at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees shouted "Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!" and clapped their hands in anticipation of the "Star Wars" creator's arrival, and gave the 81-year-old Lucas a standing ovation as he took his seat. "Opening in 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media," a press release from the museum said. The 11-acre campus, in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, will include a green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theaters, a library, restaurant, café, and retail and community spaces. Some of its collection will include art from comic book artist Jack Kirby, painter Norman Rockwell and illustrator Kadir Nelson, as well as a Lucas archive with models, props, concept art and costumes. "I love all art, no matter what it is," Lucas said after showing a video that gave a sneak peek at the museum. The video included renderings of the museum interior and exterior, as well as the museum's broad range of art ranging from more traditional fine art and comic book strips to "Star Wars" sculptures and installations. Lucas began the panel recalling his days as a college student struggling to pursue his dream of becoming an art collector due to the steep cost of fine art. But the filmmaker found an affordable exception with comic books, sold cheaply in "underground" markets. Now, rather than selling art he collected over around 50 years, Lucas said he prefers to create what he calls a "temple to the people's art." Lucas kept the conversation focused on the museum and did not discuss "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones." For del Toro, the museum offers a visual past that belongs to everyone" and can't be erased, noting that he may move some of his personal art collection to the Lucas Museum. Part of the liberation that comes with narrative art for the "Pan's Labyrinth" director also means that art can't be made with a computer app, as it lacks "personality and knowledge."

Adam Sandler honors late costar Cameron Boyce in Happy Gilmore 2... six years after his tragic death at age 20
Adam Sandler is once again making sure Cameron Boyce is never forgotten. Six years after Boyce's tragic passing, the beloved actor made a posthumous cameo in Happy Gilmore 2, Sandler's newest Netflix comedy, which hit Netflix on July 25. In one early scene at a golf course check-in desk, Boyce can be seen playing on a background TV screen. The footage appears to be from Jessie, the Disney Channel series Boyce starred in from 2011 to 2015. It's a quiet blink-and-you'll-miss-it tribute, but many fans found his brief presence on their screens to be deeply meaningful. 'Adam Sandler including Cameron Boyce in #HappyGilmore2 as a cameo is so heartwarming,' one fan posted on X. 'He really loved that kid and I'm so glad he keeps his memory alive.' Another wrote, 'Adam Sandler honoring Cameron Boyce in Happy Gilmore 2 melts my heart.' 'Adam put a tiny Cameron Boyce (played his son in Grown Ups) tribute in Happy Gilmore 2. Excuse me while I sob,' a third wrote. Boyce, who played Sandler's son in the Grown Ups films, died in 2019 at age 20 due to a seizure related to an ongoing medical condition. Boyce was found unresponsive in his home on July 6, 2019, and pronounced dead later that day. His family confirmed three days later that he passed away due to an epileptic seizure, which was confirmed by the autopsy later that month. Earlier this month, Boyce was remembered by three of his Descendants co-stars on the sixth anniversary of his tragic passing. Sofia Carson (Evie), Booboo Stewart (Jay) and Sarah Jeffery (Audrey) - all took to Instagram to pay tribute to their beloved co-star. Carson shared an undated black and white throwback snap of her, Boyce and fellow Descendants co-star Dove Cameron (Mal). She added the poignant caption, 'Our Angel. Forever,' which received over 1.1 million likes in nine hours from her 20.3 million followers. Jeffrey also took to her Instagram story sharing a throwback pic from 2014 of her and Boyce, along with a poignant tribute. Your laugh, imagination, talent, generosity, and loving heart were second to none,' he added. Descendants followed a group of kids - the offspring of iconic Disney characters - who try to free their parents from captivity. Carson's Evie was the son of the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Stewart's Jay was the son of Jafar from Aladdin and Jeffrey was the daughter of Aurora and Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty. Boyce also starred in Mirrors, Eagle Eye, Grown Ups, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer and Runts, along with playing Luke Ross on Jessie from 2011 to 2015.

Top WWE SummerSlam match at risk with top star 'blocked from entering US'
A major WWE match announced for SummerSlam 2025 is in serious jeopardy after a top superstar wasn't allowed to travel back to the United States. On the first night of the August 2 and 3 double header, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul are set to face Randy Orton and Grammy Award-winning singer Jelly Roll in a tag team match. McIntyre, known as the Scottish Warrior, has been back in the UK for a friend's wedding in England over the weekend, but he's now claimed he was stopped from boarding his flight back to the US where he has lived for a number of years. 'There's now a good chance I don't make #SummerSlam,' he captioned a video on X as he talking into his phone camera from a field. 'It's quite a week I've had. You wanna know how it's been capped off? i can't get back into America, They wouldn't let me board my flight,' he said in the video. 'I'm in England still, at my buddy's wedding – what a wedding it was. Planning to go back, train for SummerSlam, but no, no, no, no, I got blocked. **Warning – the below video includes strong language** 'Wife and I walked up to the gate, trying to check in, always goes perfectly fine. Not this time.' McIntyre noted that there was an issue with his documentation, despite never having a problem any of the other times he's been travelling. He continued: ''Drew, you don't have your US passport. I know who you are. I know you've lived there for a long time, I know you're showing me pictures of your US passport, and your global entry. ''I know exactly who you are, your property and the likes. But no, we can't let you in the country buddy. 'So my wife and I panic, we say we've got a sick animal at home, we're good people, we care about our animals, we care about people. In the end, his wife travelled back alone 'against her will' to see their pet cat, while McIntyre had to turn around and leave the airport. Ever the professional, the former world champion used the real life incident to continue his on-screen feud with Jelly Roll. 'Here I am. So what happened, what changed this trip? Jelly Roll. You know somebody, got some connections? You've got your 15 minutes of fame right now, can get away with some stuff? You're hot, soon you will not be, so you're getting it in when you can,' he quipped. 'You realised when I took off my shirt on SmackDown, you went , 'Oh my God! All that aura, I'm screwed!'
