"Stepmotherly treatment": Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge slams Central government over pending relief funds to Himachal Pradesh
In a post on social media X, Kharge wrote that the Himachal government had demanded a total relief package of Rs 9,000 crore.

He further wrote that in 2023, the Congress had announced a total of Rs 4,500 crore to the state, while the Modi government only provided Rs 433 crore to the state, and called it a 'stepmotherly' treatment.
'Even before this year's rainfall, the Himachal government had demanded a total relief package of 9000 crore from the centre. In the 2023 tragedy, the Congress state government had released special assistance of 4500 crore, whereas the Modi government at the centre provided only 433 crore to the state,' he said
'Now, the Modi government has recently announced 2000 crore for 2023 in a hurry, and the BJP is busy taking credit for it, but the relief amount is still pending. This is the stepmotherly treatment of the BJP towards Himachal!! It is hoped that this time, instead of taking credit, the BJP will take action to provide help for the losses,' the post read.
Kharge, in his post, demanded that the Central government release the pending disaster relief funds for Himachal Pradesh.
He also expressed grief at the loss of lives in the state due to the heavy rainfall and landslides, stating that they were 'extremely distressing.'
'The news of loss of life and property due to heavy rainfall and landslides in Himachal Pradesh for the past several days is extremely distressing. The government and administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I appeal to Congress leaders and workers to provide every possible assistance to the public. We demand from the central government that the disaster relief funds pending for Himachal Pradesh for the past few years be released with immediate effect,' the post read.
A total of 51 people have died while 22 others have been missing due to the torrential rains, flash floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh, according to the latest official data. (ANI)

Located around 100 kilometers from Bengaluru, Bagepalli lies along the Bengaluru-Hyderabad national highway and borders Andhra Pradesh. The region is home to a significant number of Telugu-speaking residents, which likely explains the linguistic roots of the original name. The government now felt a need to rebrand the town with a name seen as more reflective of Karnataka's identity. This isn't the only name change the cabinet has pushed through. In the same meeting, the Karnataka government also approved renaming Bengaluru Rural district to Bengaluru North. The decision is part of a larger effort to reorient district names in accordance with geographical identity and administrative ease. 'System killing farmers': Rahul Gandhi slams PM Modi over 'no MSP guarantee'; says 'farmers sinking deeper into debt'
Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that farmers are falling into deeper debt daily and claimed that the system is killing farmers quietly, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had pledged to increase farmers' income twofold, is busy "watching his PR spectacle. " On the social media platform X, Gandhi referenced a news report indicating 767 farmers in Maharashtra died by suicide within three months. "Imagine... in just 3 months, 767 farmers in Maharashtra have taken their own lives. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 shattered homes. 767 families that will never recover. And the government? Silent. Watching with indifference," he said. Gandhi pointed out increasing agricultural costs, stating, "Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day--seeds are expensive, fertilizers are expensive, diesel is expensive... but there's no guarantee of MSP. When they demand loan waivers, they are ignored" He referenced recent news, stating, "But those with billions? Their loans are easily waived by the Modi government. Just look at today's news--Anil Ambani's Rs48,000 crore SBI 'fraud'." The Congress MP stated, "Modi ji promised to double farmers' income--today, the reality is that the lives of those who feed the nation are being cut in half. This system is killing farmers--quietly, but relentlessly, while Modi ji is busy watching his own PR spectacle." On Wednesday, Gandhi expressed concerns regarding India's increasing reliance on Chinese products, identifying it as a significant threat to the agricultural sector. On X, he cited reports highlighting India's agricultural crisis due to dependency on foreign fertilisers. The report noted India imports 80% of speciality fertilisers from China, with recent supply disruptions affecting farmers significantly. "India is an agrarian country, and the farmer is the backbone of our economy. But today, that very backbone is bending under the weight of foreign dependence. India imports 80% of its speciality fertilisers from China, and now China has halted the supply," he stated. Gandhi highlighted ongoing fertiliser shortages, noting farmers' difficulties accessing urea and DAP. The addition of speciality fertilisers to scarce resources has worsened conditions. "This isn't the first time, farmers across the country are still struggling with shortages of essential fertilisers like urea and DAP, and now a new 'Chinese crisis' looms over speciality fertilisers. On one hand, the Prime Minister is busy printing his photos on fertiliser sacks, while on the other, our farmers are becoming increasingly dependent on "Made in China," Gandhi stated. The Congress MP criticised the government's lack of preparation and domestic production initiatives despite known risks. He emphasised the absence of policies supporting local fertiliser production. "Despite knowing that this supply could be disrupted at any moment, the government made no preparations. When the need of the hour was to promote domestic production, they made no policy, no plan," Gandhi stated. "Will the Indian farmer now be helpless even in his own soil? As precious time and healthy crops are lost, the farmer, drowning in debt and despair, is asking: 'Kiska Sath, Kiska Vikas,'" he concluded.
