Indiana State Fair announces new foods for 2025 Taste of the Fair

Indianapolis Star13 hours ago
In just 31 days, the 2025 Indiana State Fair will return with its thrilling rides, staggeringly large pigs and, perhaps most importantly, a lot of very tasty, deeply strange foods — many of them made from relatives of the prodigious swine.
This year's participants in the annual Taste of the Fair contest, which the State Fair announced July 1, will feature 40 inventive foods that fairgoers will be able to purchase Aug. 1-17. Attendees will also be able to vote on their favorite of the dishes, with the top 3 vote-getters coronated on the Fair's final day.
The 2025 Taste of the Fair lineup spans from the relatively straightforward (by State Fair standards) to concoctions that truly stretch the boundaries of what we consider food.
Fairgoers simply looking for a good bite without too much risk can check out the street corn steak tacos from Carmel-based Urick concessions, a small step back toward the norm after the vendor's peanut butter and jelly-tossed chicken wings last year. The Indiana Pork Producers will also deliver a tried-and-true option in the Hog & Slaw, pulled pork topped with creamy coleslaw.
There will also be plenty of safe bets in the drinks department, including Muncie-based Twisted Drinks and Food's peach boba iced tea, R&W Concessions' mango and strawberry Tropical Thunder shake-ups and the State Fair Hook's Historical Drugstore Museum's vanilla cold brew coffee with vanilla ice cream and cookie crumbles.
Elsewhere on the fairgrounds, guests will find a deep-fried diversity of meat, potatoes and, in a long-running trend, pickles.
Smoked meat appears on this year's entry from last year's Taste of the Fair winner Nitro Hog BBQ. Their "Machos" feature tortilla chips topped with macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, cheese sauce and barbecue sauce. Lebanon-based concessions institution R.E. Smith will serve a bacon-wrapped, deep-fried and barbecue sauce-doused chicken tender topped with a cherry tomato. And for a more traditional experience, Twisted Food and Drinks will sell a deep-fried boneless pork chop sandwich with barbecue sauce.
You can find burgers at stands throughout the fairgrounds, but Lebanon-based McWaters Concessions will serve its patties between grilled Little Debbie Honey Buns with bacon and cheese. And though the sting of defeat is still fresh, Pacers fans can declare their undying loyalty by downing Spencer-based Red Frazier Bison's "Yes 'Cers" Burger, a bison patty with pimento cheese, fried potato sticks and horseradish pickles between slices of Texas toast.
Speaking of burgers, French fries appear beneath fried chicken bites, bacon, hatch chili queso and Mike's hot honey at Urick locations and alongside melted cheese and mild or spicy jerk sauce at Jamaican Breeze.
And, of course, there are the pickles. Though not quite as well-represented at this year's event compared to recent fairs, the beloved fermented cucumber will still get its spotlight at Florida-based concessions titan Swains in the form of pickle ranch sauce on Swains' bacon mozzarella pizza, as well as inside the deep-fried Golden Oreos of North Liberty-based Pickle Barrel.
Guests will be able to wash any of these delicacies down with Sun King's cotton candy-flavored ale (4% ABV), Urick's cotton candy margarita or Urick's Brunch Mary or Brunch Mimosa, both of which feature skewers stacked with miniature sausage sandwiches, fruit, donut holes and a waffle stick.
That's merely a taste of the Taste — you can see the full lineup on the State Fair website.
Fairgoers who sample food from designated Taste of the Fair concessions stands will be able to vote for their favorite dish by simply scanning a QR code posted on the vendor's station. Last year's winner was the fried sugar biscuit and pulled pork sandwich with apple butter barbecue sauce from Nitro Hog BBQ, which is based in Indy.
This year's highest vote-getter will receive $2,500; second and third place will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.

5 Nontraditional Media Personalities Covering The Diddy Trial

Source: Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Deliberations are now underway in the high-profile sex trafficking and racketeering trial of music mogul, Sean 'Diddy' Combs. As the courtroom proceedings unfold, some nontraditional media personalities—particularly on platforms like TikTok and YouTube—have been providing real-time updates, offering minute-by-minute insight into the case and the pending verdict. According to CNN, on June 30, Judge Arun Subramanian gave final instructions to the jury regarding the charges against the 55-year-old Combs, which include two counts of sex trafficking involving force, threats, fraud, or coercion, and one count of racketeering. After the instructions, the jury was dismissed to begin deliberations. Nontraditional media personalities have emerged as top sources during the Diddy trial. Vloggers like Armon Wiggins, and TikTok influencers like Kadisha, Secret Sam, and Queen Sheba have become voices in the trial—offering top-tier Diddy trial coverage. Shake My Ash TikToker Shake My Ash, who has gained a substantial following for her trial coverage, reported on Monday that Juror No. 5 was selected as the foreperson. He is a 31-year-old white male who works in finance, attends church regularly, and is a member of a country club—details that may shape how he leads the jury through this closely watched case. Ash also revealed that Combs was granted permission to bring back a few books to his cell while the 'jury decides his fate.' Kadisha It may be a while before we get a definitive verdict from the jury because deliberations have hit a snag. According to Kadisha, a TikTok personality known for 'spilling the tea' on media, news, and entertainment, the jury sent a note to the judge raising concerns about one of their own—Juror No. 25. As reported by NBC News , this juror is a 51-year-old Manhattan-based scientist with a PhD in molecular biology and neuroscience. Kadisha claims other jurors are worried Juror No. 25 may not follow the judge's instructions, and that he may need to be replaced with an alternate. Armon Wiggins Just two days before deliberations began, another prominent social media figure—journalist and YouTuber Armon Wiggins—spoke with NewsNation's Ashleigh Banfield about the shocking closing argument delivered by Diddy's attorney, Marc Agnifilo. Wiggins described how the courtroom grew tense as Agnifilo made an impassioned plea to the jury, urging them not to fall for what he characterized as a racially charged prosecution effort. The defense attorney accused the federal prosecutors of attempting to strike all Black jurors from the panel, leaving only one Black juror on the case. 'I was kind of gagging, because a lot of people in the room, once he actually finished, started clapping, and it was a lot of Black people, a lot of young people,' said Wiggins. 'They were clapping for the defense. So, I definitely think he made his point, and he got in those people's heads.' Queen Shiba Darling As the trial unfolds, social media has played a vital role in filling in the gaps and providing real-time insight. Among the standout commentators is YouTuber Queen Shiba Darling, known for her sharp psychological analysis and cultural commentary from a Black perspective. She's been closely observing the trial from inside the courtroom, sharing detailed breakdowns of subtle but crucial developments. In a video posted on June 26, she alleged that multiple people helped Diddy facilitate interstate travel for escorts—including a travel agent—and claimed the rapper would at times directly text his escorts, both male and female— to coordinate their travel and payment for their participation in his infamous 'freak-offs.' Another influential media voice at the trial has been The Breakfast Club 's Loren LoRosa. She was present earlier this month when Kanye West made a surprise courtroom appearance in support of Diddy, causing a frenzy outside the courthouse as fans and photographers rushed to catch a glimpse of the rapper. In a June 13 appearance on NBC New York , LoRosa revealed that Kanye has been running a 'Free Diddy' campaign and has even attempted to revive his late Sean John clothing line in solidarity. Plane passenger scores empty row with brazen seat hack: ‘Gotta admire the strategy'

It was the mother of all airline hacks. A scheming mom took seat squatting to new heights after she scored an entire row for her family on a United Airlines flight, as detailed in a viral Reddit post. In the post, titled 'Seat shenanigans — advanced tactics,' the Redditor described how they preboarded to see that the entire row in front of them was 'completely open.' Just then, a family of four boarded the aircraft in Group 2 and occupied the entirety of row 9, after which the mother started behaving somewhat suspiciously. 'Mom says to kids, 'Don't unpack yet,'' relayed the Redditor. 'Mom is anxiously refreshing the seating chart in the app.' The poster initially thought they were looking to see if they'd been upgraded to business class — something the poster had been waiting for as well. 'I check the app, see that row 9 is showing completely empty,' they wrote. 'So I think that they got the upgrade.' That's when they realized the fam was 'not waiting to upgrade' at all but rather attempting to game the seating system. 'They were watching the seating chart like hawks, hoping the seats don't get booked, waiting for the door to close, because they wanted to take over an empty row!' the Redditor exclaimed. It appeared that mom eventually won this game of mile-high musical chairs. 'Door is closed, and we're taxiing. The seats are theirs! Well played, mom!' they wrote. The Redditor then added, 'Oh, and I didn't get the upgrade… But a full row of three isn't so bad. Reddit users had mixed feelings about the seating hack with some praising the parent for her resourcefulness. 'You gotta admire their strategy. Not something I would do but wow!' gushed one. 'I don't see the issue here,' declared another. 'They waited until doors were closed to capture the seats. They knew they could be moved. I think it's fine.' A third pondered if the mom was actually a seat squatter, writing, 'The seat map is notoriously inaccurate, so that alone wouldn't incline me to think shenanigans — but the mother's behavior with telling the kids to not unpack yet and constantly refreshing her phone display is rather sus[picious].' The Redditor replied, 'Oh they were all smiles and high fives once we started taxiing. There was no doubt what they were up to.' Meanwhile, some critics shamed the parent for essentially taking seats that she didn't pay for. 'I really think people should sit in the seats they paid for,' critiqued one commenter, while another wrote, 'Some FA's will enforce the walk of shame.' A third recalled witnessing a fellow passenger's failed attempt at an unauthorized upgrade. 'I was on an intercontinental 10-hour flight,' they wrote. 'Exit rows were both empty. Huge leg space. 30 min into the flight, some guy decides to move and take one of the seats. Not 1 min later the FA comes 'Sir, you didn't pay for this seat. Go back now.' The move comes amid an uptick in seat squatting in the friendly skies. California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall said that should one of these fly-jackers occupy your air chair, it is best to address the situation calmly and in good faith. 'Pull out your boarding pass. Not only to double-check [if] you are correct but also as proof if the seat squatter protests,' she said. 'If the seat squatter refuses to move, do not engage; do not recruit other passengers to rally; immediately request assistance from the flight attendant.'

Perez Art Museum in Miami hosts photo book speed date event

It was October of 2022 when Miami-based photographer Josh Aronson got an idea that he knew would bring people in to see his exhibit. 'I mounted an exhibition at Baker–Hall Art (formerly Club Gallery) in Miami. I remembered a speed date artist talk I'd attended years earlier, hosted by the incredible photographer Shaniqwa Jarvis in New York. I loved the format and thought, 'What if you removed the stage and made the format democratic?' I figured everyone in the arts has at least one photo or art book they treasure.' He invited people to the gallery with a photography or art book in hand in a speed-date style format. It worked. On Thursday, July 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., Aronson brings 'Photo Book Speed Date' to Thursdays at PAMM (Pérez Art Museum Miami), the first time he'll host his artist-led program at a museum. 'Last year, I brought it to Green Space Miami, and then hosted it in New York with MANUAL. Now it's coming to a museum for the first time and I couldn't be more excited.' So is the means the book, and the end your dream date? 'Not exactly,' says Aronson. 'It borrows from the traditional speed dating format, without the romantic expectations. Instead, it's about connecting through a shared love of art and photo books. You bring your favorite and share it with someone across from you. They'll share theirs, too. By the end of the night, you've met a ton of new people, seen dozens of art and photo books you might not have had access to, and had real conversations rooted in curiosity, enthusiasm, and a love of art and photography.' And there are matches made, in some respect. 'The idea of a 'match' is really flexible. I've seen artists meet curators, photographers meet printers, and even mentees find mentors. I intentionally open the night to everyone––from students to collectors, from gallery people to appreciators—because the potential for connection is bigger when everyone's in the room together,' says the creator. There's never a charge to participate and Aronson hopes to keep in that way. Art and photography books can be expensive or hard to get your hands on. I love that 'Photo Book Speed Date' creates a space where we can share access—where one person's bookshelf becomes everyone's inspiration, even if just for an evening.' If you go: WHAT: Photo Book Speed Date WHERE: Pérez Art Museum Miami, 1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami WHEN: 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 3 COST: Programming on terrace is free, but RSVP necessary; Admission to the galleries is $18 for adults and free for PAMM members INFORMATION: (305) 375-3000 and is a nonprofit media source for the arts featuring fresh and original stories by writers dedicated to theater, dance, visual arts, film, music and more.
