Kuwait's MEW secures SAB approval for $553mln GCCIA power import

Zawya4 days ago
KUWAIT CITY - The total amount for which the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy obtained conditional approval from the State Audit Bureau (SAB) to contract for the import of electricity from the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) reached KD169.126 million over nine months -- from April to December.
According to reliable sources, the ministry got approval for the import in April, amounting to KD2.641 million, two approvals in May the first for KD1.756 million and the second for KD3.348 million, in addition to an approval from June until December for KD161.381 million.
Sources indicated that the energy import is through the coordinated efforts of the ministry and GCCIA to support the grid, maintain the stability of the electrical system during summer, and avoid resorting to scheduled power outages as much as possible, given the increased loads resulting from high temperatures and increased consumption rates in summer.
Sources disclosed that the ministry utilized the GCCIA as one of the solutions to address the energy crisis until production rates increase and new projects are implemented shortly.
Sources said these projects include the installation of gas turbine units operating on a combined cycle system to increase power production at Al-Subiya power station by 900 megawatts, indicating the ministry is racing against time to complete the fourth phase that includes the tender, award, contracting, and implementation procedures.

Apple starts Saudi retail operations with opening of web and app stores

Apple has initiated its retail presence in Saudi Arabia with a website and mobile application as it plans a major expansion in the kingdom. The website and iPhone app are now live, and give consumers in the Arab world's biggest economy the full range of Apple products, the California-based company said on Tuesday. It is also the first time Apple has offered direct service and support in Arabic. Apple's array of services in Saudi Arabia will include dedicated support teams, flexible payment options, a trade-in programme, free engraving and special pricing for customers in the education sector. Retail channels will offer customers "a new way to explore and shop", said Deirdre O'Brien, Apple's senior vice president of retail and people. The company's physical presence remains vital to its overall retail strategy, despite the popularity of online shopping channels. From its first shops that opened in the US states of Virginia and California in 2001, Apple now has a network of 535 outlets across 27 countries and territories, according to the company's website. Apple first revealed plans to expand in Saudi Arabia in December, planning several stores including an "iconic" outlet in the historic city of Diriyah, as it increases its regional presence. Tuesday's statement said Apple is in the "initial stages" of planning to open the store in Diriyah, a Unesco World Heritage Site. In 2021, it opened the region's first Apple Developer Academy in the kingdom. Two students from the programme emerged as global winners in 2024. The company also launched its latest hearing aid and hearing test services in March, offering residents in the kingdom free access to the technology. The company first entered the Gulf in 2011 when it opened its online store in the UAE. It has since opened four Apple Stores in the Emirates, two each in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. A fifth outlet is scheduled to open in Al Ain this year as part of Apple's wider investments in the UAE that have totalled Dh6 billion ($1.6 billion) in the past five years, the company says.

Standard Chartered: UAE leads key markets in HNW allocation to sustainable investments

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Standard Chartered announced today the launch of its latest Sustainable Banking Report 2025 titled 'Transition investing: the next wealth frontier?'. The report, which explores investor sentiment around transition investing [1], reveals that high-net-worth investors surveyed in the UAE allocate 27 per cent of their portfolios to sustainable investments, the highest among all eight markets surveyed. In addition, 87 per cent of UAE investors are interested in transition investing, broadly in line with the global average, according to the survey. The findings are based on a survey of high-net-worth individuals across the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Mainland China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore. It explores how investors are approaching the shift to a low-carbon economy and identifies the opportunities and challenges associated with transition investing. Commenting on the report, Rola Abu Manneh, Chief Executive Officer, UAE, Middle East and Pakistan, Standard Chartered, said: 'The findings reaffirm the UAE's leadership in sustainable finance, with UAE high-net-worth investors allocating the highest share of their portfolios to transition investments across all surveyed markets. This growing momentum supports the country's Net Zero 2050 vision and reflects a broader shift towards low-carbon, future-focused investment strategies. At Standard Chartered, we are committed to enabling this transition by providing the insights and solutions that help investors capitalise on emerging opportunities and contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable economy.' The UAE's strong allocation is mirrored in the specific investment themes gaining prominence across the country. UAE investors are particularly focused on high-impact investment themes that align with the UAE's energy diversification goals and broader climate commitments. Green hydrogen (51%), carbon markets (48%), and carbon capture and storage (47%) emerged as the most compelling areas of interest, reflecting a growing focus on real economy solutions that support the transition to a low-carbon future. While investor appetite is strong, the research identifies key barriers slowing broader capital deployment into transition strategies including higher risks (45%) and limited access to credible products (36%). These findings suggest that unlocking further capital will depend on building trust, enhancing product transparency, and improving access to well-structured solutions. Although interest in the UAE and other surveyed markets is high, the research also reveals a broader knowledge gap. Only a small proportion of global investors (15%) were able to clearly define the concept of transition investing [2] before being presented with a formal definition and examples. This highlights the ongoing need for investor education and clearer market guidance. To help bridge this gap, Standard Chartered has launched a Transition Investing Guide designed to support clients in assessing credible opportunities and contributing meaningfully to the global transition. -Ends- Khaled Abdulla, CFA® Director, Head of Communications Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing United Arab Emirates About the Sustainable Banking Report 2025 The Sustainable Banking Report 2025 surveyed high-net-worth individuals with assets under management of USD1 million or more across eight key markets – Hong Kong, India, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates. A total of 1,600 respondents, aged 25 to 66 years old, participated in the survey in Q4 2024. Transition Finance at Standard Chartered We align ourselves to our Transition Finance Framework, which sets out the assets and activities that qualify under a 'transition' label when we undertake Transition Finance. It refers specifically to investing with the ambition of supporting and enabling the transition to a low carbon economy. This expands impactful investments to those outside of traditional climate solutions (e.g. renewable energy), to include companies in high-carbon sectors which have credible plans to align or maintain alignment of their business with a net zero trajectory. This can include organisations in sectors such as steel, and cement, but also companies which enable the transition of these sectors (e.g. scrap steel producers). [2] Survey respondents were first asked an open-ended question on what they think transition investing is about before they were presented with a definition and examples.

Al Neyadi: Our investment in our students is an investment in the future of the institution and its economic and developmental directions, which support the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 The Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) successfully concluded its first Student Summer Camp, graduating 20 students aged between 8 and 12 years. This pioneering initiative reflects the Corporation's commitment to engaging the next generation in shaping Dubai's economic future and raising awareness about the essential services it provides for customers. The summer camp program offered a variety of interactive workshops, educational lectures, and hands-on scientific experiments, aligned with the Corporation's key areas of operation. Activities included conducting experiments in the central laboratory, visiting the maritime radar room, learning about maritime safety procedures, and touring the Corporation's library, where students read stories about historical sea voyages. The program also featured a healthy meal preparation workshop hosted by QE2 Hospitality Academy, a PCFC subsidiary. The graduation ceremony was held in the presence of students' families and led by H. E. Nasser Al Neyadi, CEO of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, alongside Saeed Al Bannai, Executive Director of Corporate Support Services. The students were honored with certificates in recognition of their active and positive participation. Speaking at the event, H.E. Nasser Al Neyadi said: 'Our investment in our students is an investment in the future of the Corporation and in Dubai's economic and developmental vision. This initiative is in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to position Dubai as a leading, sustainable global economic hub'. Al Neyadi emphasized the importance of encouraging youth to explore careers in the Corporation's sectors, which include environment and sustainability, commercial licensing, civil engineering, ports and maritime safety, and customs services. He highlighted the vital role these sectors play in national development and the importance of educating the community about them. He also expressed appreciation to parents for entrusting their children to the Corporation's summer program and commended the students for their engagement, stating: 'The success of this first camp encourages us to make it an annual event during summer breaks, allowing students to invest their time in activities that benefit their development.' 'We believe in raising our children in an environment that nurtures learning and positive interaction,' he added. 'This helps shape a generation that is well-prepared to serve the nation and tackle future challenges with confidence and creativity'. In detail, the camp program included an introduction to customer experience procedures and service delivery channels, hands-on scientific experiments in the PCFC Central Laboratory, a visit to the marine radar room, an overview of marine safety procedures, a trip to the PCFC Library to explore stories of historic sea voyages, and a workshop on preparing healthy meals presented by the QE2 Hospitality Academy affiliated with the Corporation. These activities, along with other educational and recreational programs, provided valuable experiences for the students.
