RISDA Launches Major Mission To Empower Sarawak Rubber Smallholders
SERIAN, May 31 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), through its agency the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA), has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Sarawak's rubber smallholder community with a comprehensive development plan.
As part of this effort, RISDA announced a RM42.69 million allocation for strategic development programmes aimed at empowering smallholders across the state.
The announcement was made during the Pekebun Kecil Makmur programme and pre-Gawai 2025 celebration, held in Kampung Raeh Baru today, which around 1,000 smallholders and local residents attended.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi officiated the event, which aimed to foster closer ties between the ministry, rural communities and rubber smallholders in the region.
In addition to outlining development plans, RISDA also distributed food aid to 100 residents as part of the RISDA Foundation's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
One of the recipients, Minang Dawi, 43, stated that RISDA had played a crucial role in enhancing the livelihoods of smallholders in Kampung Raeh Baru, particularly through replanting initiatives and support for supplementary crops such as pineapples, lemongrass and bananas.
'These are now bearing fruit and bringing returns,' she said, adding that she hoped RISDA could also help farmers reach broader markets.
'Our crops are thriving, but we don't yet know how to market them more widely. We hope RISDA can support us in this area,' she added.
Another rubber smallholder, Tajan Paing, 70, expressed gratitude for RISDA's support, which had helped his rubber trees begin to yield, but urged the agency to improve the poor farm roads that continue to hamper access and transportation.

Minister urges Muslims to respect burial grounds, avoid superstition
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Some individuals allegedly taking soil from the grave of Nurly Shahirah Azman in the belief that it brings blessings. - BERNAMA Kuala Lumpur: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, has called on Muslims to uphold proper burial etiquette and avoid practices that contradict Islamic teachings. His statement follows reports of individuals collecting soil from graves, believing it holds blessings. Mohd Na'im emphasised that visiting graves should serve as a reminder of mortality and encourage prayers for the deceased, not as an opportunity for superstitious acts. 'I have followed news reports about certain individuals allegedly taking soil from the grave of Nurly Shahirah Azman in the belief that it brings blessings. Such action is deplorable and goes against the principles of Islamic faith,' he said in a Facebook post. He warned against actions that could lead to shirk (associating partners with God) and urged Muslims to adhere to Islamic law. The minister also commended Nurly Shahirah's family for their measured response and the religious authorities for monitoring burial sites. Nurly Shahirah, a 23-year-old hafizah (Quran memoriser), was among the 15 UPSI students who died in a bus crash in Gerik earlier this month. Her family installed barriers at her grave in Kampung Gong Pasir Muslim Cemetery, Terengganu, to prevent further misuse. Mohd Na'im called for prayers for Nurly Shahirah's soul and strength for her family. The government continues efforts to counter superstitious practices and reinforce Islamic values. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Advice to the Forces not to share sensitive content on social media
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Khaled said he was confident that armed forces commanders would issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. TAWAU: Members of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) have been reminded to refrain from uploading sensitive content on social media, particularly related to security assets, to prevent hostile parties from identifying the nation's defence capabilities. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he was confident that armed forces commanders would issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. 'Sometimes in their eagerness to showcase training or equipment, personnel may unintentionally reveal where such assets are stored. 'This could expose our strengths to those with ill intent,' he told reporters after officiating the Tawau 2025 Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Carnival at the Tawau Sports Complex. Mohamed Khaled was responding to a reminder issued Saturday by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who cautioned military personnel against sharing everything on social media, particularly sensitive information related to troop movements and operations. Meanwhile, he said the Defence Ministry continues to acquire strategic assets annually to strengthen national security. These are not off-the-shelf purchases, he stressed, but custom orders tailored to the MAF's operational needs across land, air and sea to ensure suitability and effective deployment. 'We have already procured 18 FA-50 aircraft from South Korea, three Littoral Mission Ships and are continuing construction of the Littoral Combat Ships, alongside radar purchases to bolster national defence,' he said. Mohamed Khaled added that the ministry is also in the process of replacing the static Tun Sharifah Rodziah forward operating base with a more modern and mobile base better suited to current operational demands, expected to be completed next year. Commenting on ongoing global conflicts, including in Ukraine, Gaza, Iran-Israel, and India-Pakistan, he said these developments highlight the importance of Malaysia prioritising the acquisition of technology-driven defence assets. 'We are also aware of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, which remain a serious concern. The government is committed to ensuring balanced defence preparedness between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Najib's DNAA appropriate given circumstances of the case
I WISH critics of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) had read the case of Vigny Alfred Raja v PP [2022]. In that case, the accused was charged in the High Court with being a member of an organised criminal group, an offence under Section 130V of the Penal Code. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
